| 4th of july | okoboji |
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 10:52 PM The proposed alcohol ban on beaches during the fourth of July is one of the most controlling, stupid things we could do for this area. Not only would it move drinkers to family places such as Arnold's Park, it will also encourage people to drive around the lake and party instead of at least keep it centralized. I always thought it was cool how we could get in our boat and go party at gull point, then go enjoy a cookout at Emerson bay, and go to Arnold's Park with our families at the end of the day for the fireworks. There was a place to go when you got sick of the party. But this legislation will not only get rid of the party that so many tourists come to the lakes for, it will also prevent me from having a beer or two while cooking ribs at Emerson bay, and will move all the heavy drinkers from a beach where families can choose not to go to, to places like Arnold's Park where families come to spend the day. Your not stopping people from drinking your only moving it to car's, boats, and places families learned to go to stay away from the party...... Okoboji is about fun in the sun, and having a fun, safe time. So DNR please don't take this away from me and make me pay a $40 cover charge or make me drink in my house because you feel like banning alcohol on our public beaches during the greatest celebration of the summer. I know most people will not be as smart as me, so before you decide ,imagine taking all those drunken safety hazards you are talking about off the beach with there boats parked and placing them behind the wheel of boats that are traveling around the congested lake. |
| Ban | alcohol |
Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 11:40 PM You should also add the loss of tourism to your list. I can tell you if I get a ticket for drinking on the beach during the 4th like I have done for plenty of years now I will not be returning. I could just as easy go to Lake of the Ozarks since I have families in both areas. |
| Time OUT... | ..... |
Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 7:29 PM Before this gets out of control. They just voted NO! on the Ban so as of right now it will be legal to drink on the beaches. Yayy!! Besides that the state is out of money and is asking for any help they can get, they are looking for mowers and clean up crews on a valintary bases. so the manpower to control the law is another issue. the Arnolds park beach in front of of the amusement park is not legal to drink on. which i have never figured out when its state land up to the high water mark so there for if you drink in the water or with in 5 feet from the water line you are technically legal to drink. but i wont get into that lol. not sure if its legal by the bridge or not. i know it started back one 4th of july when a dock broke and people got hurt and they sued the city and after that they banned it. |
| Big Mistake | should ban alcohol |
Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 10:58 PM Too bad the DNR Commissioners don't really understand how bad the Gull Point State Park beach can be on the 4th of July! If only they could stop by for a look themselves. It is nothing but an over crowded beach of people drinking and out of control! Forget it if you wanted a spot on the beach for a family with toddlers to enjoy building a sand castle. Ha, no room for that! It is wall to wall partiers. Yeah, the kind that don't give a damn about our lake, they own it that day! They will litter, they will over drink, get loud, fight, harrass law inforcement, indanger themselves and others. But oh yeah, they need a place to celebrate since it is the 4th of July. Lets just hope it will be safe! |

Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 11:36 PM If you want to party and drink until you pass out on the 4th of July, that's your business, but it sure would be nice if you bring a box of trash bags to help pick up the mess that is left by those who do litter and mess up the beaches. I don't care who you are or what age you are, there is no excuse for littering all your junk all over the place and expecting someone else to pick it up just because you are too immature to take responsibility for your actions. |
| heres the deal | .. |
Friday, May 14, 2010 at 1:34 PM If you see someone litter, someone throwing stuff on the ground, fighting, all that, pick up your celluar phone, and call the law inforcement and they will handle it. why out law something for everyone. just get the ones who are causing issues out. one phone call people. just that much more. this area has a lot more issues to worry about. did you know in a mater of mins you can get any kind of drug you want in the spirit lake school district?... but yet they wont run a drug dog in cuz it effects students rights. did you read about the Price Lab deal about using false adresses to save tuition costs and one of them is the superintedent in the spirit lake school systsem. every few months turns into a gossip page with isses and this shows proof whats going on. if you truely want to do someting about the issues take it up with the proper people and go right to the source. im guilty for talking about the school district but im sure as heck gona ask the board what the hell is going on. |

Friday, May 14, 2010 at 6:23 PM Three words...Okoboji Boat Works. The City has taken away the opportunity to be able to go to the Boat Works beach and have a good time . Not that the situation is totally controlled but I can say that Butch always had staff that was watching out for anyone out of control. I still say that the fact Okoboji Boat Works is not available to the public is a sad deal. It was a wonderful entertainment place to go. Everyone is willing to fight the DNR but who (other than Butch) will fight the City. |

Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 10:50 PM Butch has done more than anyone to make this area a great place to live for normal people. The city needs to lay off him and let him actually operate his businesses without harassment. Where else in iowa are you gonna have tropical theamed bars. |
| Good grief . . . | :-( |
Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 4:42 PM We're back to Butch again???? So he's "done more than anyone (you) know to make this area a great place to live". How sad. Bye, bye . . . |
| Good Grief? | okoboji |
Thursday, May 20, 2010 at 10:50 PM Yeah because I know so many more people in this area that have created not one but two family friendly vacation destinations on Okoboji. Butch could just say screw it and take all the money he makes from his marina and build a private mansion and isolate himself from the public but instead has invested it into our community. I get sick of people who have to bitch about everything. Imagine a lakes area without the Barefoot bar and Okoboji boats. It would be a lot less exciting. Butch has put so much time into making bars that are actually fun to be at instead of drunk filled dives. Bar's that you can actually bring kids to and feel safe doing it.So sorry if I think the guy has helped our area more than most people. |

Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 9:46 AM Does anyone know anything about the old Gipetto's restaurant? I heard it is going Mexican. I, for one, think we have enough Mexican restaurants in the area. That used to be the place we went for special celebrations. |
| Rebo's | Rebo's |
Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 3:11 PM The announcement earlier was that the restaurant would be Rebo's, sister restaurant to Reb's in Sioux City, mentioning such things as a salsa appetizer with roasted corn and black beans, Salsa Feugo with tomatoes, onions and jalapenos, Black & White flatbread, with Caribbean black beans and roasted poblano cream sauce w/ marinated grilled chicken, Stacked Enhciladas, Southwest Roulades, Fish TAcos, Cajun mixed grill with jerked pineapple/mango pork loin. So I would say Mexican fusion, or southwest flavors rather than traditional Mexican, might describe it. |

Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 3:28 PM Sorry for the typo. The restaurant in Sioux City is Rebo's not Reb's. See the article here for more info http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/lifestyles/food-and-cooking/article_b19aeae4-05fe-5d7c-9a55-90e02948a429.html |

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 12:40 PM Restaurants have a hard time making a go of it up at the Lakes. It seems like several locations close down during the fall and winter, and something else opens up for the next summer. That usually fails, and the cycle begins once again. One could easily argue that Okoboji is underserved for restaurants in the summer, but overserved during the rest of the year. It's a tough business. |
| Rails to Trails | is a Joke |
Monday, May 24, 2010 at 1:42 PM Todays Worthington paper has an article on the rail line that was purchased that starts west of Superior through Spirit Lake to west of Allendorf. The head of the trails committee for Dickinson County thinks it is the greatest thing, gonna bring all kinds of new businees to all the small towns located along the line. This all at a cost of $200,000 per mile for the 40 mile stretch, Just a small 7 million dollar projected when completed down the road. But he mentions no big thing all funds for project is coming from grant money. Does he not know where this money is coming from? Just keep paying more taxes. with the economy where it is I would sure think their is better places to spend taxpayer money. Last month in Dickinson County News on the same day Dickinson County Trails awarded $500,000 grant and Spirit Lake School District looking to cut budget another 500,000. I gues that way when kids don't have a school to attend they get always ride their bike for 4 months a year on our 7 million dollar trail... |

Monday, May 24, 2010 at 4:10 PM Just returned home from Girls Weekend 2010 which was held in your town. The 13 of us girls had an amazing time and our cabin(cabin 160), with its private dock at Fillenwarth beach was perfection. It was a tie between Captains and The Bakery for the best time had and Rebos, mineral city and tweeters had food to die for. Every one we met,for the most part, was very nice. We LOVED the dog at the lux and would have made that our home base except for the very cranky bartender (loosen up man, loosen up). We are glad to have met all the people that we did, and are seriously thinking that the traveling girls weekend may have just thrown down roots. see you all next may? |

Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 11:37 AM In Omaha it was reported that there is 'rampant nudity' on the Fourth and that was another reason to ban alcohol. We've never been there for the July 4th weekend but are there no other public beaches other than Arnold's Park and the state parks? People who do not even camp at Gull Point come in to use the beach and then take over the restroom facilities to throw mini beer bashes. Should we speak to the camp host or one of the rangers if this happens again this year? I like a beer as much as the next guy but if I'm trying to get cleaned up afetr a sweaty day at the beach I'd like to be able to access the facilities without a bunch of stumblebums in the way. |

| part of the | problem |
Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 12:42 PM The problem with the school district is that it is losing kids. they are going to Okoboji instead. Even ones living in town. But I guess thats what happens when you have issues in a school system. have that nice Sami center but the money used in donations is for the building alone. NOT the up keep. and we have a superintendent who lied about where he lived. I wounder if anyone will actually take action on that. |
