A good massage therapist is Moriah Markwardt. She has a salon and mini spa at her home in Milford. I haven't personally had a massage yet, but I plan on it in the near future. Her number is (712) 320-6931.

anyone know where the ice cream machine went from Schuck's bait shop. They had the best ice cream in town, we were told someone brought it in the lakes area. any news on this?

Love ittoo
Friday, June 6, 2008 at 7:41 AM
I loved that ice cream too. Especially the mint chocolate chip. I asked them where it went. They said they had to take it out because too many people were not paying for the ice cream they took. Kum and Go had a machine last year too,(the one on the highway when you turn to go to The Inn. I don't know if they still do, but they only had boring vanilla and chocolate flavors. If anyone knows of a place that has the mint chocolate chip or the raspberry chocolate chip. Please post it. Thanks.

Kum & Go in Spirit Lake had a machine too. It actually is a Schwans product! I believe they still have their machine with the chocolate mint and raspberry chocolate. I'm not totally sure though, it's been awhile since i have been in there. That machine was introduced years back in the lakes area with Dynos. I agree... that ice cream was yummy!

For a huge hog roaster, try Linda at Smokin' Jakes in Arnolds Park. They have a huge roaster that they used to cater my party last summer. They do offer catering, but you might ask about renting the roaster, too - 712-332-5152. Good luck!

Today is the 40th anniversary of the Arnolds Park tornado. The Roof Garden Ballroom wound up in the parking lot. The Queen nearly was lost. Many, many trees torn out of the Amusement Park, damage to all the rides. Lots of bank erosion along Echo Bay. No lives lost, which was a miracle.

Boy do I remember that year. We actually had 2 tornados hit that evening. Our family was hosting a cocktail party for my grandmother and her friends. Fortunately we had a basement, so all our guests and our neighbors ended up down there. One tornado went through. My father, Cliff Rahael and I went out front to view the damage. We then saw a huge wall of water off the point by Okoboji Boats. We tore back into the basement. My mother was just rushing down the stairs with a refreshed bucket of ice and said she heard a train. That second tornado, one that had backed up, was the one that caused most of the damage...to Fillenwarths, the Park, Boystown and Vern & Coila's restaurant. We walked around a bit and saw trailors tossed over power lines at Smith's Trailor Court, loads of power lines down, and MAJOR damage across in Arnolds Park. We ate using the grill and headlights from my parents car. Exactly one week later we had more damage from straight line winds. They blew open the wondowns and all our lamps and area carpets were thrown over the stair railing. I remember later that summer hearing the now roofless "Roof Garden" telling everyone goodnight at the end of each concert/dance.

I had forgotten2 tornadoes
Friday, June 13, 2008 at 8:51 PM
I had forgotten that there were two tornadoes. BojiLover, your parents and mine were friends -- actually, my parents were closer in age to your grandparents and I remember playing gin rummy with your grandfather at our house here at the lake. He was nice to indulge a kid and play cards with me. And I believe your grandmother was one of the women my mom played bridge with up here. What a summer that was -- thank goodness for the great job the weatherman at KICD did or there surely would have been many dead.

Friday, June 13, 2008 at 11:53 PM
I also remember the tornado as we rode out the storm inside the souvenir shop by the HiHo Club. Of all the places that we could have gone, we go into a place that had glass showcases. Thank God that it went over at tree level and was not on the ground, we would have been like pin cushions. It is a day that I will never forget as long as I live. I'm glad we do not have tornados here in Arizona, just the normal monsoon storms.

Tornadoes & Monsoons;)
Saturday, June 14, 2008 at 8:24 AM
Yep, the KICD weather man . . . we used to call him Eldon Tornado! As for our AZ. monsoons . . . still can't figure why they call them that since they don't fit the description. Monsoons rain solid for days. To us they're like good, old fashioned Iowa lightning and thunderstorms that come and go. Suppose to be more severe this year as they were in years past. Yippee.

The benefit for Flint Dandy has had a change in location. It will now be held at Chopper Central in Arnolds Park. Chopper Central is actually about five or so buildings south of The Ritz--so it shouldn't be too hard to re-route people if need be. It is the building that use to be Pizza Hut a long time ago, and across the street from the former Woody's Pizza building--which I believe is Red Rock Chicken Cafe now. As for times and events--they are the same. This Sunday June 22nd. Dart tournament with sign in at 9:00 am. The games of 501 will be played in the morning and the games of cricket in the afternoon/evening.

just wandering? do hair salons have to meet certain health codes? do stylist have to meet them too? if a stylist had something contagious does that person have to tell the client?

dear wandering oneof course
Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 9:36 PM
While you are out wandering, you might wander to the State of Iowa website to look up the regulations for hair salons. Then perhaps you could wander to an on-line grammar book. Should you feel like filing a complaint against any stylist, you might want to brush up on your English composition skills.

(Okoboji)-- An early morning fire has pretty much gutted a popular lakes area restaurant. Firefighters were called to Tweeter's on Highway 71 in Okoboji around 2:30 a.m. this (Monday) morning. Several passerbys reported seeing smoke coming from the building and called 911. Upon arriving, Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Yungbluth says they found considerable smoke coming from the eves, roof line and vents outside the kitchen. At that point, he says the Milford Fire Department was called for assistance. Yungbluth says it appears the fire started in a stairwell to the basement...near a back table where locals played cards. He says that's where the damage is heaviest. Yungbluth says the building most likely will be a total loss. He says it appears to be in-tact from the outside, but the dining room sustained heavy fire and smoke damage with heavy smoke damage to the kitchen and moderate smoke and heavy water damage reported to the basement.

Damage Estimate In Tweeter's Fire Could Approach $1 Million (Okoboji)—The dollar estimate of damage from a fire early Monday that pretty much destroyed Tweeter’s in Okoboji could approach a million dollars. That word from Deputy State Fire Marshal David Schipper. In addition to equipment and furnishings, several Iowa Hawkeye photos and memorabilia were lost in the fire. Schipper has ruled the cause of the blaze accidental. He says it was the result of a malfunction of an electrical service that supplied several t.v.’s and a trophy case lighting system in the dining area of the establishment. That service is located in the east wall of a stairway in the main dining area that went to the basement. Schipper says that’s the same area where the fire started. An alarm system was activated, which notified a monitoring company, which called 911. Several people passing by saw smoke coming from the building and called 911 as well. The blaze was reported around 2:30 a.m. The Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Milford Fire Department and several area police departments, along with the Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance. Several firefighters remained on the scene several hours later keeping an eye out for flare-ups. Kay Hoppe, the restaurant’s owner, told KUOO she’s thankful for everyone’s support during this difficult time and that she plans to re-build. Her catering business remains in operation.

Will rebuild=)
Monday, June 23, 2008 at 6:46 PM
The owner of Tweeter's says she will rebuild. Check out this kind of stuff at www.exploreokoboji.com/news_local.asp that way no one has to copy and paste onto here, then we can give the lady her Okoboji info she's asking for. But she must understand that sometimes we need to "hash things out". There's more to Boji than just beaches, and water! =)

ARE THERE ANY BETTER THAN TWEATERS? I was so saddened to learn of the Tweaters fire this morning in the Des Moines Register. It was a great place to get quality food and at a very resonable price compared to elswhere in the Lakes area. Even as ISU fans we put up with the Hawkeye pictures and did not complain. Our families are coming up in July to stay a week at Fillenwarths, the best resort on the Lake. We need to know if there are any eating establishments that compare with Tweaters in quality of food at their prices in the area. We've been coming to Okoboji for 30+ years so are familiar with a lot of the places, but consider many overpriced for what you receive. If there are any new places worthy of spending our money, we would like to know. We will get by this summer and hope for a new Tweaters the next year. See you in July

Only have eaten at Tweeters a couple of times, and it's a shame it's gone. (For those who aren't familiar with it, it's on the west side of 71 just north of the bridge over the lake. It's between Mau Marine and the Kum N Go/boat ramp.) A couple of alternatives for some reasonably priced, good food is Remington's in Spirit Lake and the Dry Dock at the Four Seasons.

Such a shame about Tweeter's! Glad to hear they are planning to rebuild. As for an alternative - no one ever gives any love to the Wharf! My fiance and I LOVE that place, always had great food, great variety, and great service, and you can't beat the view!

For my money Mineral City in Arnolds Park is one of the best eating establishments in the Lakes Area. They have a great menu w/salads, steaks, seafood and great pastas w/homemade sauces.         I am glad you had good luck at the End Zone because everyone I have spoke with so far has said the same thing. Poor Service, Long time to get your food, and expensive for the portions you receive. I tried it anyway and regretted it. Service was OK but didn't get the appetizer I ordered until an hour later, food did not come for an hour and a half and someone said they would comp. the food and then ripped me off for drinks and the appetizers. I will not return to the end zone. The funny part is the Owner blamed everything on her kitchen staff while she sat on her butt at the bar except to get up and yell at staff. I will not return to the End Zone even if you paid me!!!!!

No prob . . .

The only glitch I had is that my security wanted me to okay it the first time I tried to bring it up, then all was well. My only complaint is that the print is smaller.

Boji GirlThe Wharf

We have not been to the Wharf for a couple years. He changed the menu and stopped serving hash browns and if you wanted bread or rolls with your dinner you had to ask, so we stopped going there. Now I hear they have hash browns again and the food it good, so, may try it again, but I still think you can't beat the outrigger for a good meal.

BojiLover---
Monday, June 30, 2008 at 11:36 AM
About Tweeters...I do not believe the new owner changed the menu at all. As to hash browns, they only make them off season as they take too much grill room to prepare. They are awesome, but not available during the summer. We get them with onions and cheese...the best on the lake! Oh...the building will be torn down and rebuilt. It can't happen soon enough!
