Have a great October, everyone! Enjoy the fall weather at Okoboji, if you can. It is a beautiful time of year. I love looking at the all the colorful trees by the lake, it's just gorgeous!

Does the okoboji area have some sort of October fest? It would be fun if they shut down broadway where all the bars are and set up tents and have a october fest for a night!

I was a once famous house on Dixon beach. Yes folks, the days of the rumbling Chris-Craft Riveria's KLC engine is sorely missed. Fishing for Bluegill and Perch from the cut-out sidewall tires over the dockposts. Mosquitos: don't miss them. More about me later; gotta go "scare" up some food.

I can not believe that the city of Okoboji is at it again. They are filing a appeal against that huge drunken bar O'farrel sisters. Butch owns the houses around it and Mary (the mayor) is the house he does not own. Why do the people of Okoboji keep putting up with this crazy spending of your tax money? I hope this changes with the election. Please vote!!! I am tired of spending my money in Okoboji to help finance things I do not believe in(private lake). I need the income that tourists bring. Anyone else?

Do we have to go over this again? The city is only protecting the zoning rights of the residents. Butch has insisted on serving liquor, a VERY profitable sales item, again where it is not allowed. The city council has the obligation to follow the law. If you lived anywhere near a bar you would probably understand. Okoboji is a wonderful place to get away from stress...until a bar and its over indulgent patrons begin to urinate on your lawn and trash your neighborhood. I think our council members are doing a wonderful job. Keep up the good work! Our rights need to stand.

Yeah thats what I heard too. The Super Target and Home Depot will be between the new Applebees and Outback SteakHouse and across the street from the new Kohls and Dillards stores

Where is there a Kohl's, etc? Is there really a Target coming to town? That would be fantastic!

Yep, all those new superstores are coming, and they are bringing a four-lane spur of the Interstate down from I-90 to handle all the traffic. Oh, and don't forget the hotel and spa they will be building at the Fountain of Youth.

Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at 12:45 PM
It's puzzling why the Okoboji City Council gave it's approval to the City of Spirit Lake to rezone the beautiful property east of the Art Center from ag. to commercial, thus ensuring the total destruction of the beautiful oak grove, and the construction of these new ugly box stores. Even more puzzling is why they won't allow their own New Inn to expand. Talk about conflicting City leadership!

okostitchokostitch@okoboji
Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at 12:56 PM
Ekim, Unless there is a plan to build a canal to the property across from the Art Center, it isn't lakeshore. And unlike the Inn, it isn't in a resdential district. See the difference?

Starting at the New Inn if you walk exactly 231 kid steps you will reach me, but I am not there. I am off Holiday Way, but I am not there. There are more wave-runners and jet-boats than there are tourists in-season on the pebbled Dixon Beach, but I am not there. I used to watch the Queen and Empress steamboats from the shore, and now we aren't there.

We just heard the news that the Blue Moose is closed. Anybody know why or if he's opening somewhere else? It's always one of our favorite places when we are there.

How about a bottle of Coke for a Dime at the Inn's vending machine by the pool? Walking barefoot along the lakefront cautiously avoiding the acorns along the way. The Fireflies at night; and then the thunderstorms only the Great Lakes could produce.

Jeff from the Blue Moose moved to The Wine Bar & Art Cottage, next to Blue Water Studios in Arnolds Park on Broadway. I think he downsized to coffee, mittens and art. I wish him the best comfort in his change of business.

What would everyone think of snowmobile drag racing returning to the Iowa Great Lakes? We are currently looking at having Vintage Snowmobile Drag Races on Sat. Jan 19th. Holding Vintage Drag Races will draw in 100's of people from all over the midwest. The Iowa Great Lakes was the premier location for snowmobile drag racing in the 80's.

I remember the races in the 80's. What fun. I remember "Brooks" being packed with snowmobilers and other hotels. The resturants saw alot of business. And we have perfect conditions with the lake. I will mark my calender. Who would I contact to help or to give some prize donations.

I had a red well on my back porch. And a dinner bell on my front porch. The kids would pump water just to see that it still worked. When dinner was ready the bell would ring and everybody would come up from the dock. There was only one electric heater, and during the cold months everybody would gather near it after dinner, or light a fire in the fireplace while a song played on the player piano.

How about standing on your dock waving a big white flag and the Queen would make a turn and come into your dock and take you to Arnold's Park? Then home again at your convience! Dancing at the Roof Garden, skating at the roller rink, and the best salt water taffy ever!!

There would always be a bowl of the salt-water taffy from Arnold's Park sitting on the coffee table. The kids always enjoyed the Tipsy House and the old Fun House sliding down the gigantic wooden slide on a rug. Seems to me the kids also enjoyed The Emporium's arcade, while the adults enjoyed a cocktail at one of the restaurants. And there was the obligatory stop at Mel's for a cheeseburger.

Spent the weekend up at the lake. Saturday was glorious! It doesn't get much better. Loved smelling leaves burning. Had our last meal of the year at Yesterdays...until next year! Lots of changes. Ranch 66 has closed. Java Joint is relocating to the old Clothes Peddler location. The Blue Moose has closed and they are working in that space for a new business, but they aren't saying who yet. I hear the Moose has located by the Perk. The new Harley Davidson building is really coming along. Will be neat to see the finished building. Saw a sign up at the Koffee Kup asking for locals to support local businesses...since Perkins was busy every time we drove by I am guessing that the KKKafe needs our support. Looks like a beautiful week ahead. ENJOY!

Sub Way, Casey's General Store, Kum & Go and a variety of Pizza Joints. Why is so hard for business to invest in different choices? Hummm will I go to Spirit Lake or Milford for Sub Way? Well maybe Milford since it will be the new addition to our lakes community. Don't get me wrong I think it's great to see new business, but as a consumer I am becoming bored with the choices.

Reading some of the current emails about changes at the Lakes brings Inkpaduta to mind. Do some of us fear change because it is different... or do some of us find change a reminder that we will someday say goodbye to the Lakes forever??? Personally, I find the Lakes my elixer for a belief in immortality. Water does seem to be the element from which all life comes. Everything else is consessions.

I agree with you: without the Lake, there is no Okoboji. Every year there's more boats, tourisits, overfishing, polluting, etc. Kind of sad really. The Lake is only so big, and its resources are are diminishing. The changes that are happening are not improvements in my book. Never thought I'd associate the word "Okoboji" with "corporation." Not like the good ol' days. I fear these changes because, well, you reap what you sow.

Hey Ron, check your scripto writing machine: it's printing out gobble-dee-gook. Are you referring to the Great Sioux "War Chief" Inkpaduta(Scarlet Point)? Is your point that Inkpaduta was a tree-hugger that was not all that fond of Mega-Condos.

I was there this evening for the first time and I enjoyed it immensely! What a neat place! And it's not just for the young folks!
