I'm not too fond of the hefty leap in my property taxes but that is something that is assessed by the COUNTY and NOT the City of Okoboji......it's a fixed cost that we all who own property here have to deal with. I can't say much good about the O'Farrell Sisters this year, I was there last weekend and it took 1hr and 15min just to get our food! The wait staff wasn't overwhelmed and busy because they seem to have empty tables the whole time we were there. I thought it might just be the day but our neighbors waited over an hour for their food the following day, they and their small children weren't too thrilled either. I got a chuckle at some of the guests suggesting a name change to "The O'Slow Sisters" on their way out.

Hi ~ Did anyone else catch the comedy hypnosis show Friday night at the Cabaret in Arnolds Park? There wasn't a huge crowd, but it was a really good show. I'll check it out again. A nice bit of variety from the same 'ol stuff!

I have lived at the lakes for 15 years. I visit every "eating" establishment just to see what is what and who has what. I must say the food around here is OUTSTANDING. My all time favorite place over the years has always been O'Farrels. Friendly, family like, and GREAT food..... until recently. Now it is more like going to McDonalds. Sad. The people and the atmosphere are NOT as appealing now. Last year, WOW....the gal who cooked, don't recall who, but she had spikey hair and was super nice, she and whomever worked with her LAST year, made the place like home, we always went home VERY satisfied. Bragged about it to everyone... LAST year. This year, I doubt I will even go back. The food takes too long to come out, its not done to my liking OR my ordering. The only thing that still rocks, is the pies. Why change your help when it is working great and then hire people who make it "NOT like home." Sad sad sad. Maybe someday it will miraculously turn about and be like it USED to be. Spikey haired gal and all. :)

Gas price in SLnewman579@msn.com
Friday, June 8, 2007 at 8:03 AM
I filled up in SL yesterday June 7th. I paid 3.15 here. When I got to Sibley IA the price was 2.98 and 2.95 IF i paid with cash. THey informed me that they had just got in new gas and it had gone down. This was a Cenex station and he said that "Shell" station was quick to change and they just follow them to keep the "locals" happy. Gas around here seems to go down in 5 cent increments. It has gone up faster than that though.I visited with a local station here and they stated that there is no competition here for them to move it down so quick. I think that is totally not right! There is more competition here than the 2 stations that are in Sibley correct? Any one out there have any suggestions? Any local gas stations have any comments? I am ready to hear your side of the story! Thank You. Jean Newman

I was up in Jackson yesterday and paid $2.99 a gallon. That saved me about $3.75 from what I would pay here. It doesn't seem like a lot of money, but it's still money and it adds up! I would like to hear from local gas station owners, too. It would be nice to know if there is a legitimate reason why we pay more in the lakes area. I know that we are a resort area, but I don't think that makes it okay to take advantage of customers. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Have a nice day.

GAS PRICES- In my travels I've noticed that prices have been around 15 cents a gallon cheaper in LeMars and Sioux City for several years. Maybe the reason for the "lack of competition" is because the retailers here all agree to keep their prices the same. As soon as 1 place goes up they all do the same within a matter of hours. When I was young you used to see "gas wars" between stations who would lower their prices to get customers from each other. Now it seems the "gas war" seems to be on the consumer. I understand the law of supply and demand but that does not explain record breaking profits and multi-million dollar bonuses for the oil companies. They claim that it is the lack of refineries, but then why haven't they invested these profits into more refineries. It doesn't take a genius to know that our fuel consumption was going to rise over the last 30 years. They claim nobody wants to have one in their own "backyard" but I think there are a lot of places that would love to have all those high paying jobs in their community. If you want to sent a message to our local retailers that we are fed up with their high prices then you need to reduce your consumption by cutting out unnecessary trips. Walking or riding a bike when you can or by buying your gas somewhere else - it is usually a nickel less in Spencer and even more the further you get from the lakes. It is time that someone realizes that we are not all millionaires living on the lake. P.S. It's not just the gas prices - the prices on some of the items at the Spirit Lake Walmart are higher than other Walmarts.

Gas Retailors in this community...Stand UP to the plate please. Gas prices do not go down quickly, the locals are punished because of this tourist area. Making a profit is one thing BUT 20 cents per gallon on every single customer here to me is just plain wrong! thank you Jean Newman

        The reason gas prices are so high in Spirit Lake can be explained in the one word the station owners live by: G R E E D ! And the other three words they practice: S C R E W T H E T O U R I S T S! And if the locals get hurt: W H O C A R E S?

Thanks to everyone who has inquired about Okoboji Lobster and Wine Co. and Newmans and for the nice comments on this guestbook. As an owner let me set the record straight. The whole property will now be called "Newmans Bistro, Wine Cellar and Marketplace." Same owners- Larry Stoller and Cris Newman. We never wanted to be the biggest resturant in town- just the most unique. We want to distinguish ourselves from the herd. Our head chef- Luke Squier is really creative and asst Jamie Paine is a pro. Luke and I have long wanted to do creative food, but a large menu and a lot of seats makes that impossible so we have expanded our downstairs seating and added cozy booths. The dining room upstairs will remain as a dining room and the bar will go back to being a bar with life entertainment on the weekends. We are looking for mellow guitar palyers and singers. A bistro offers a smaller menu with hand crafting. We will feature seafood, fresh fish, a meat dish, pasta etc. We hope each meal will be memorable. We also try to keep our prices down and continue to feature our wine flights and good wines at an affordable price. A bistro is also casual dress and atmosphere- and a freindly staff that can serve you instead of throw food at you. Tuesdays we will do a seafood boil too and Wednesdays sushi. We also look forward to doing more flaming dishes at the table. The store has been remodeled to be more user friendly and overall we just want people to like to be there. Come see us. Larry Stoller

To BojiDreamin' -- You will find a wide variety of entertainment here at the lakes. If you pick up a copy of the Lakes News Shopper at most convenience stores you will find several pages of ads for bands, D J's etc. If you enjoy singing or just like a friendly atmosphere and good food I would like to invite you to check out Cocktails in Arnolds Park - just south of Casey's. I do Karaoke every Friday and Saturday night starting at 9 PM. They have also added a classic rock band on Sundays from 4 PM- 8 PM. Wherever you choose to go have a great time and drive safe.

HEY ZACH...I beg to differ! Even though Arnolds Perk coffee shop is definitely an "above average" bistro...give MUGGABEANS COFFEE CO. a try in Milford. They have THE best coffees, lattes, and mochas, etc. in the entire Lakes Area, if not all of Iowa! The atmosphere is awesome, they have wireless internet, and the food is great too! I'm a regular @ MUGGABEANS, have been to all the area coffee shops, and believe me, none compares! They're right on the corner of main street (Hwy. 71 & 10th) across from United Community Bank.         For those of you who were around the lakes of the time East Okoboji was dredged the first time; what part of the lake was dredged? How deep was the lake (before, after, and in the very beginning)? Did the dredging improve water quality. I know that clear lake is planning on making there lake clear through dredging, and I was wondering if it was possible for East Okoboji. Thanks.

Why is there still no separate line for the season ticket paying customers at Arnolds Amusement Park ? Why is the Log Ride usually broken ? Why is there a $2.00 fee for each bucket of water-balloons, when last year this was included in the price of admission ?

Give them a break. It's all good.

Give the Park a break. It is a quaint little park that is doing the best they can to operate in a cost effective manner. I'm sure they are doing the best they can with what they have to accomodate people, and try to keep everything running. Just appreciate the uniqueness of it, and don't complain because it may cost a little more, and you might have to wait a little longer in line. It is one of the few gems left. I would take that any day over waiting in long lines at the larger amusement parks.

I just got up and read the Des Moines Register this morning. I was very sad to see the write-up on Okoboji and how the resorts are slowly being bought up and turned into condos. I have been coming to Okoboji all my life and staying at various resorts on the lake. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of Vacation Village, and sitting around the campfire at Crescent Beach. I am currently bringing my children to Okoboji each summer too and they can't wait for the week we spend there. I hope that the resorts like Fillenwarth's and Pick's can continue to hang on for those of us who do not have the kind of money to buy a condo or house on the lake. Okoboji is a state treasure that everyone should be able to enjoy!

I have been lucky enough to grow up spending some quality summers and Okoboji. I have been going for the past 5 summers with my aunt, uncle, and cousins and we spend a week in a cabin. I have so much fun! We love Arnold's Perk, the coffee is amazing! It's great to be able to just hang out on the beach or go shopping at the Emporium and Clara's Clutter Closet. I don't want anything to change and after reading that article in the Des Moines Register I fear that it might. I will always have amazing memories of my summers at Okoboji and I couldn't ask for a better vacation spot.

I met him last year while out shopping with my family, he offered us some free donuts to try and they were so good, maybe it was just the right time of day or something but they hit the spot with all of us. We are coming up for the 4th of July and hope that he is still in business. He mentioned that he was an avid golfer and also a Chiropractor, was an interesting dude, if he couldn't feed you, he could crack you or beat you on the golf course.         Dredging can be an issue. To dredge a lake will take away natural aquatic plant life that helps sustain water quality. Also dredging doesn't make sense if you don't restore/fix your lake shore from runoff. Runoff is what causes the result of dredging in the first place. Better to use the money to restore your shoreline with Low Impact Development or methods that retain rainwater on sight. Then to spend the millions to dredge every 25 - 50 years. Why fix the issue, if the problem is not solved?

I"d like folks to know about Pillsbury Point State Park located several hundred yards west of the State Pier in Arnolds Amusement Park. The trail leading to this beautiful spot is 100% public, even though the conditions of the trail vary greatly. The trail is concrete from the pier up to Pick's Resort. It is here at Picks trail-users can take a left and access the Abbie Gardner State Site. Continuing from Picks the trail steps down to a dirt trail,"The Old Indian Trail". Then before the hiker reaches "The Point", the trail is cobbled with large stones. Then when the north parcel of The State Park is reached, the trail returns to a dirt path. At the very tip is a clay enbankment with tree roots for stairs which decend to a very large and wonderful stone bench right of the lake with a view of West Okoboji,"beautiful". This place holds special memories for many people, and the visitor can see the entire lake from this bench. Watch for poison ivy in this area. (Leaves of three, let it be). This north portion of the Park has old stone benchs which are suffering from neglect. They were built by WPA stone workers in the early 30S. There is also a wooden bench which is a wonderful spot to read or reflect or just rest. The trail then rounds "The Point" and continues to the south. At the public access at the Pump House the home-owners have attempted to pivatize the trail by paving it with bricks, and they also built a brick sidewalk leading to their house.Believe when I tell how many people become frightened to use THEIR trail at this spot. DON'T Be! This is your trail, The Peoples trail. The more people that use it, the better. The trail trail leads to the south and larger portion of Pillsbury Sate Park. Looking to your laft you will see The Abbie Gardner Historic Cabin and Museum. Walk up their. Their is a water fountain and aplace to access the trail again at Picks Resort for the return walk to the Amusement Park. Please use this trail. If we don't use it, it may dissappear. This is your trail! The Iowa DNR are in charge of it's maintainance in the park property, and the City of Arnolds Park in charged with the responsiblity on it's care. Believe me, the town leaders have bowed to the privete home-owners and haven't done a thing, It's a shame. Help save this special trail for today, and for the children of the future. WALK IT! Thank you.

Lake Okoboji and Arnolds Park are magical. I feel privileged to have had an opportunity to live and visit the lake from 1991-1999. The ambiance and people possess a strong sense of place with deep generational roots. In fact, one half of my Master's thesis was devoted to this unique area. I'd be happy to share photographs and poetry written about the area.

Does anyone have any info on something in the water in West Okoboji? My friend has a cabin there and she and her family were in the water, and anywhere the water touched them, they had "bites". Terribly itchy - she is a dr. and wasn't sure what it was. I'm heading up in a few weeks and want to swim. I'm hoping whatever it was is gone!!!

I was in the water at Gull Point 2 weeks ago and got the itchy spots. They lasted about a week and are not itchy anymore, I just put anti-itch cream on them and that cleared it right up. I was in the water again this past weekend and haven't had any problems. I talked with a few other people this weekend about it that had got the same thing. I would bet that you are safe to swim this weekend. Have fun!!

Itchy Biteswhat it is
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at 4:38 PM
It's swimmer itch - those itchy bites. Swimmer's itch is a skin reaction that people have to the entry of a larval of certain flatworms into the top layer of the skin. After the parasite enters, it dies and may cause dermatitis in individuals who have been previously sensitized. The itchy bites will last up to a week. Towel dry after swimming to avoid outbreaks of rashes. Lakes all over the country have this - some years it's worse than others. FInd out what swim areas have the worst cases and avoid swiming there. Or make sure to towel dry when ever you exit a lake and have your kids do the same, since they get it more often because of their long exposure to lake water.

And . . .It's generally caused by . . .

Is there really a donut making Chiropractor at the lake? Sounds like an interesting guy! I will have to check it out over the 4th. That is what I love about coming to the lake each year - a chance to meet interesting people. Eating donuts isn't bad either! :)

We went swimming over by Triboji on Sunday. I didn't go in the water but my two sons and husband did. My one son and husband have really bad itchy spots on them. We made sure to shower as soon as we got home too....didn't help. My son is especially miserable. Be careful when you go swimming in the lake!

Is it possible to buy Nutty Bars by the box from the stand in Queens Court? We usually enjoy one in the shoppe itself but as we are staying across the lake I am wondering if we could take some "to go" to put in our cooler, to enjoy back at the resort throughout the week. And is Newman's in Okoboji, Arnolds Park or Spirit Lake? I'm confused, having never been ot Okoboji Lobster and Wine....

Thanks for the info on the itchy spots. Sounds like maybe we'll be hitting the pools instead of the actual lake. Newmans is between Okoboji and Spirit Lake on the highway.

Swimmers itch info, I was in the water in the Triboji area the past weekend, took a shower after getting out, did not have any problem.

I used to work for the Nutty Bar Stand. They do not have to-go boxes, but if you bring a cooler, the employees will wrap them up tightly in platic bags to put in your cooler, and if you ask nicely, they'll even do their best to grab the coldest Nutty Bars they have. Just ask for them right before you head back across the lake, don't dawdle on the way home, and put htem in your freezer. Let them sit for a few hours and they should be set. Enjoy!

There were 7 of us who went swimming in West Lake this last weekend, and no one was itchy afterwards. I guess just make sure you dry off, and shower afterwards. Don't be afraid of the water!! Enjoy Boji, and I can't wait to be up there again this weekend!

Thank you so much NBS! We will be sure to take our cooler for our day-in-Arnolds-Park. In regard to swimmers' itch, this will be the 4th year in a row we've vacationed at the lake and so far (knock on wood) none of us have ever gotten it. And I've read about it on this website for at least 2 years. Might be certain parts of the lake are affected more than others.

Ate at Mineral City last night. A nice menu with a variety of choices, great salads, seafood and steaks with really good pasta's, homemade too. We ate late, 10:30 PM and it wasn't crowded. (first day open). Patio has lake view and is quiet. Check it out. It's where Kinbrae used to be on Hwy. 71 at the South end of the Grade between East and West Okoboji.

The Hair Team is an excellent place to get your hair done. It's on Lake St. in Spirit Lake. Our whole family has gotten our hair done there for several years. Ask for Tammi or Amber, especially. They do a great job! Lots of experience. Their number is 336-1440

Cost Cutters at Wal-mart is a great place to get your hair done (and not too expensive!!) They've always done a great job on my hair, no complaints here! Ask for Sheena, she's great.
