| Tia Hofmeyer is the best ! | Erica Jacobson |
Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at 12:03 PM Please do say a prayer for Tia Hofmeyer...she was my realtor when I bought my first house....she was very helpful, but not pushy in any way...she treated me like family and answered all of my questions and understood my reluctance when I purchased my first home...she, then, became a good friend...she is a part of what makes Okoboji a beautiful place to live in....now, she is going through a tough time in her life, so please say a prayer for Tia and her family and if you have an extra dollar or more to spare, please donate to her cause....she would do the same if the role were reversed...there is a benefit auction for her this Saturday Nov. 4th at the Outback in Milford....I would assume donations could also be sent to her at Dowden Hinn...Thank you for your time !! |
| Outrigger | at Outrigger... |

Donations can be dropped off there and would be very much appreciated. Try to stop by at 4:00 Nov. 4th. The Pizza Ranch will be serving food, GOOD STUFF! |
| wondering | from afar |
Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 5:16 PM I am curious about the posts about Ms Tia H. What happened? Please let us know just what is going on or where we can find out. She will be in our prayers. |
| local control | concerned local |
Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 6:05 PM What is all the stink about local control? The locals have done a terrible job when it comes to protecting the lakes from over building, zoning and the like. I think we should leave it to the state. That way at least local opion and who you are won't be a factor. I say no local control. |
| To: Local Control | Zoning.... |
Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 7:04 PM The city of Okoboji has sure taken a lot of heat for inforcing their zoning......thank you for sticking by your guns! |

Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 7:50 PM My mom had found out she was diagnosed with breast cancer about 2 months ago. She had two surgerys and now is undergoing chemo. Me being around her all day I can definetly be the one to say that it hasn't slowed her down a bit. She is still crackin her jokes and workin her butt off! I love you mom! I also wanted to thank everyone who has helped support her thru out these last couple months. It makes me happy to see how many people really do care. Thanks. |
| Okoboji | Control |
Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 9:13 PM The city of Okoboji has not done a good job of enforcing zoning. I am all for local control, as long as you can trust the persons making the decisions. |
| to: Okoboji Control | geez |
Thursday, November 2, 2006 at 11:22 PM Okoboji is very good at enforcing their ordinances, and that's a GOOD thing. Pretty difficult to "abuse" zoning enforcement. Laws are laws. |

Friday, November 3, 2006 at 8:41 AM Experience isn't always the best teacher. Being an accommodating people person is a big part of that position. Unfortunately she didn't learn from Marie Barrett when she had the chance. |
| City of Okoboji | Cares |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 8:45 AM I feel the City of Okoboji has done a good job of enforcing zoning in a fair manner. They have to make tough decisions, but have done so in the best interest of the City. I don't live in Okoboji, but I enjoy visiting. |
| Think about it! | ...... |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 11:51 AM Why the hell would you want to leave zoning or local control to someone who doesn't live in your county or city? Do you really think they know better about the land you work and live on each day than the local elected officals? - that you voted in. PLEASE - the state has no business controling any of my assets - I would rather leave it in hands that I know and not some guy at the state house who is bought off by special interests. |
| local control | concerned |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 12:15 PM And the locals have done such a fine job. Where do we start the list. It took front page Des moines Register to get the water park erosion issues to light and handled. All the talk about LID being used, the counties comprehensive land use plan. Where is it. If the locals want control they had better take control and do a better job. All of the development in the area and (I am not talking just condo's) has done and will do more damage to the lakes than any hog confinement in other parts of the county. Lets get the prioities straight and put the blame where it needs to be. |
| TULAGE | N/A |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 1:07 PM I'm really not running for Mayor of Milford. My post was about a different local control. I said previously: "If elected Mayor of Milford, I would put child abusers in a public stockade & put them on view on the former Water Park property. Thank you for your support. |
| Local Control | Is no Good |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 1:35 PM If I have 80 acres that I have bought, paid taxes on and farmed why should I not have the choice to do with that ground what I want to do. If I lived in town and my neighbor was tearing down a old house and putting up a three story mansion that blocks my view down the road, why is that o.k. Another thing maybe the former congressman from Spirit Lake should smell the stench that sometimes comes from his former fishing supply company, That smells just as bad as any hog building some days. |
| Boji Girl | The Outrigger |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 2:19 PM I don't even know who the owners are of either The Outrigger or The Grill. I was just saying The Outrigger is a good place to eat. Now that things have slowed down at the Lake we like to go to those places cause they're not as busy and easier to get into. I could name alot more resturants that are good - The Wharf - Dry Dock - Lighthouse - Tweeters, anyone else know good places to eat??? |
| LOCAL CONTROL | LOCAL RIGHTS!!!!! |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 3:20 PM For one thing there are LID sites - talk to Steve Anderson at the Clean Water Alliance - he will show you a map of the sites. It takes money and a change in the city - which is a long process. Also the Land Use Plan is in the works - that also takes time. Local Control - THIS DOES NOT EFFECT residents of any city or townships - they already live in local control. The Local Control issue to date is about Agriculture that local governments do not have any say on how large hog confinements are placed - If we had local control for them - then the county would at least has some rights in placement. Right now those large hog confinement have more rights than a person living in town. Please take the time to understand and don't vote on emotion - vote on facts. |
| FACTS | LOCAL CONTROL |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 3:27 PM Since 1995, the number of hogs produced in Iowa has gone up by only 20 percent. However, the number of farmers raising hog has fallen by a staggering 73 percent! The 15,000 hog farms lost were mostly family operations forced out because of pro-confinement legislation, HF 519 and SF 2293, laws passed in 1995 and 2002, respectively. It's time for local control. Let's give the farm back to the family and not to big ag industry. |
| MORE FACTS | VOTE FOR LOCAL CONTROL |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 3:28 PM A 1999 University of Missouri study showed CAFOs lower land values within a three-mile radius of the sites by an average of $112 per acre, or $268 million total. |
| ONE MORE FACT | ...... |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 3:29 PM The confinement industry continues to reap huge benefits at the expense of Iowa’s air, water, soil, family farms and rural communities. |
| TULAGE 2 | UKNOW |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 4:32 PM Maybe you (or someone) should run for Mayor of Milford! This city could definately use some new direction... |
| LOCAL | CONTROL |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 4:46 PM Is it ok for every landowner directly next to the lake to apply pesticide, insecticide and fertilizer to their perfectly manicured lawn and you don't think that makes it to the lake, but a hog building 6 miles away is going to pollute the lake give me a break. Take a ride on the lake and see how many jet ski and boats are on the lake you don't think that affects or polluts the water. As far as I am concerned what is the difference between a out of state house owner on the lake versus a out of state owner of liverstock. What value does that out of state homeowner bring to Dickinson County. |
| Get the Facts | Straight |
Friday, November 3, 2006 at 5:08 PM I don't think many of you that are against hog buildings know the facts. 95% of the buildings are not owned by large out of state companies. The buildings are owned by individuals living in the county. These companies pay this individual to house the livestock and for caring for the livestock. The feed is purchased from local elevators or private companies and the livestock is hauled by local haulers. The buildings are built by local contractors and the items are purchased locally. Local labor is hired. This can go on and on. The risk for the farmer is so much less because he don't have to worry what the market does and have to put up a large amount of capital to purchase the livestock. Their is no more livestock now than 20 years ago. I think if that if you want to get local control lets stop the condo and houses buildings around the lake, that needs to stop. |

Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 1:26 AM To STRAIGHT AND CONTROL---HOW DO WE STOP THIS MESS??? |
| Lakes Quality | Local Control |
Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 8:21 AM You mention fertilizer on the lawn - that hinders lake quality - yes it does, I agree! But guess what - the county or cities can't do anything about it because it is controlled by the state. It would be illegal for this county to restrict the use since it is in the hands of hour state house. JUST LIKE WHAT IS GOING ON NOW WITH HOG CONFINEMENTS! The County can't do anything about hog confinement placements - it's in the hands of the state house. That's why we need Local Control! |
| Boats Vs. | Pigs & Poo |
Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 8:32 AM The out of state home owner spends their money here with taxes and entertainment. The out of state hog guys take their profits back to their state at the expense of our air and water. It is not logical to take all the boats and jet ski's off the lake. Plus that is not the reason Iowa has the worst waterways in the nation. But it is logical to have a sense of control on the placement of these destructive hog confinements. Think about it! |
| to boats, pigs and poo | Captain Hunyuck |
Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 11:35 AM Starship La La, earth date 20060411. Yes, Pigs and Poo, that is logical. Many Iowa earthlings, however, get thier lievlyhood and human nutritious matter from those hog confinements. Live long and perspire. CH |

Sunday, November 5, 2006 at 7:09 PM I think it is time to catch and take care of all the people in the lakes area that are dealing, making, and selling any type of drugs. Do you realize we not only have meth and weed here but coke too? Maybe we should elect someone who will take care of this problem. Arresting the people who use is not stopping this. Bring in someone they don't know from Des Moines and get them to buy- Big cities do this all the time. We need this taken care of now! |

Monday, November 6, 2006 at 9:47 AM (Ames, IA)--Iowa State Cyclones football practice was delayed nearly two hours today after player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the practice field. Practice was immediately suspended and the police and federal investigators were called. After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance unknown to Cyclone players was the GOAL LINE.Practice resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again. |

| voting | issues |
Monday, November 6, 2006 at 3:05 PM I think the Lakes Area's voting issue(s) are nothing compared to what Sioux Falls has. Did you know they are voting on an abortion ban?? And that topic is SO controversial ... I can't stand it! My thinking (and it is just mine) is that the ban should be in place. It is probably already being taken advantage of as "birth control" for some teens. And I am a firm believer that if you are old enough and responsible to "have sex", then you should be old enough and responsible enough to carry a baby full-term. Adoption is always a wonderful option..but so many people oversee that. I think abortions could be legal for victims of rapes or incest..but those teen girls just spreading their legs and the guys not carrying condoms..those abortions should be illegal. What do my fellow Iowans think? |
| get out | more |
Monday, November 6, 2006 at 3:06 PM Maybe if you got out more, like to the Knights of Columbus thing..you might not have such a negative attitude :) SMILE :) I can't wait for elections to be over....next week at this time, everyone will have forgotten all of this controversey! |

| I | agree..... |
Monday, November 6, 2006 at 8:32 PM about the abortion ban. There are so many people that would love to have a baby and can't. You are right, if someone is old enough to be having sex, especially unprotected, they should be prepared to carry a baby full term, and go through the delivery. Adoption should always be an option, and yes, too many people use abortion as an afterthought for birth control. Exceptions should be made in the case of incest or rape. |
| ABORTION | ------ |
Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 9:51 AM come on this is 2006 and if teengirls/women are getting pregant it is because they want to. There are too many ways to have safe/protected sex. If you get an ABORTION in this time & age it's proably because the father don't want anything to do with the baby and/or you any longer. RAPE is a totally different subject! |

Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 11:41 AM I'm not sure what you are saying about abortion. So this is 2006 and more & more girls/women are having sex "because they want to". So are you saying if the father leaves them, abortion is the only way? Or are you saying something else. I am not quite clear. Thanks! |

Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 12:46 PM I think Tia said how the benefit best in her email to our Relay for Life team. "The auction went real well! It was awesome, there were SO many people there it was literally shoulder to shoulder! And everyone was VERY generous. The money will go a long way... no matter what your pre-existing conditions are. It's expensive, but beats being under-insured! Thanks for all of your help, donations and bids! You guys are great." There was more, but you get the drift. |

| I dispise | abortions |
Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 8:02 PM Unfortunately, I think the extreme left is saying, by banning abortion, women's rights are being taken away. They seem to completly ignore the real issue, such as the murder of a human life. That little mass of cells that is created is a child. I am 100% in agreement for banning abortion. If someone decides to have sex, they also must be responsible enough to take the proper precautions. Come on, all you liberal women and weak men. Take some responsibility for once in your life and take advantage of the "choices" that are available to you that will harm no one...such as the hundreads of different types of condoms, pills, creams, the "morning after pill"...get your tubes tied or your boy-parts snipped. Banning abortion will not take any "rights" away from anyone, but it will force people to be RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. Oh, dare we mention NOT HAVING SEX! OH DEAR NO!!! Don't say that! God FORBID! Oh..can I still say GOD? Or will the Liberals be offended? I know a girl who had three abortions while she was in highschool...and now can not have children at all...GOOD! She doesn't deserve them! We could just allow abortions, but force sterilization upon anyone who chooses to go that route! |
| shiest. | sevenleggeddooka@yahoo.com |
Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 10:17 PM for the lady directly below me with the strong opinion on abortion: i am very tempted to say screw you for your great life that you have never been raped. if you are that close minded that you have to force YOUR opinion on others, that's sad. Every woman, and every man that has been with a woman, deserves the right to chose. I myself have never had one, but if i had gotten pregnant AT THIRTEEN when RAPED i would have had that option. Everyone's case is different, let the doctors and patients decide, not the politicians and the uneducated. |
| let me stand | corrected |
Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 10:50 PM I neglected to mention that I do approve of abortion in cases of rape, incest, or cases where the womans life is in danger ( physical problems...not MENTAL ) or where the child may be profoundly ill. There...does that make you feel better knowing that I wouldn't dare take away your "choice"? Choose to keep your legs together or deal with the outcome. Like I said in this message, instances where choice was not an issues, other means of dealing with a pregnancy should be considered. Nonetheless....it is still a human life you are taking. It is your life...live with your mistakes. |
| choose | choose |
Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 10:59 PM Furthermore....the right to CHOOSE. Lets see....choose WHAT? Ok...lets focus here for a few moments....focus on consentual adult heterosexual relations. Choose....hmmmm....yes....CHOOSE TO BE RESPONSIBLE. Let me tell you this. My 4 year old daughter is the result of invetro fertilization. We couldn't have children. Thank GOD, doctors and $35,000 and we now have a wonderful little girl. And I see people getting pregnant on a whim and ending it with little or no care in the world because it isn't convienient. RESPONSIBILITY is the key. STOP USING this rediculous " it is my right " crap as a cop-out. You have a right to use protection, as you have the right to not have sex. Simple, isn't it? If you were forced into having sex, different story, so don't get distressed. |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 1:15 AM the point is, the government does not have laws against stupid people not breeding. yet. It's just not one person's choice as an all-or-nothing thing. You can't save everyone, and there are THOUSANDS of babies overseas that need parents too. i understand that. if abortion is screwing with nature, invitro definately is. what do they do with the 'leftovers'? ask your doc. |

| Abortion | ~~~ |
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 7:31 AM The whole abortion issue, yes if you have been raped it is a horriable thing but is it still that babies fault? There are many people in this world that could still love and care for that baby. It is still a life, do you think in the long run your life would be better because you killed that baby? There are many people in the world who endure the 9 months and know even in their time of need they saved and life and gave something to someone who wanted a baby more than anything. I have known someone very close who had an abortion and I still don't know if she understands what she has done. She hurts more than herself. I'm sill dealing with it and it's hard. I know a women who has almost given everything to have her baby, yes that means her life was in jeaperdy. Now she has what she prayed for, her beutiful baby. I know others who would give anything but have had to go to adoption. Just think about those people before you think about abortion. |
| kids and drugs | Parents? |
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 7:32 AM Along with the drug dealers, I think a significant amount of responsibility needs to be pushed back to the parents of all children. Where are some of these kids parents? Do the parents know where the kids are ?? I agree, blast the drug dealers....but parents need to be parents. |
| wow, am i opinionated lately... | sevenleggeddooka@yahoo.com |
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 8:39 AM Yeaaas...I am personally against the idea of abortion in general, I feel there's life at conception, just that everyone has a choice. There are many people out there that are just emotionally and physically not stable enough to go through long enough for adoption to be an option. and on that note, I'll quit being redundant and shut up about that one. and to the person who wants to know what a pagan is: 10 times out of ten that will be a christian asking me and will result in 'saving my soul'. thanks for possible concern, but i am perfectly saved. I'm not intending to insult anyone, FYI. |

| a choice | really? |
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 11:58 AM This nearly brings tears to my eyes. Calling ending a pregnancy a CHOICE. When there are so many other choices to make and so many ways of being responsible for YOURSELF....and people call this a choice. Call it what you want. It isn't a choice any God fearing person would make. |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 1:23 PM This is interesting to me -- do most Catholics not consider themselves Christian? I thought the umbrella of Christianity included Catholics as well as Protestants. I think this would be news to the Pope. :-) |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 2:30 PM Wow.. That is all I can say about this site. People start talking about elections, which leads into abortion rights, then religion, oh yeah don't forget hog lots. Then somewhere along the line a freak showed up and they start talking about many gods.. aka (Golden gods). As I was reading all of this crap, I came to a two conclusions. We live in a weird World, and there are a lot of freaks that visit this website. In addition, I think some of these people need to check into their local psychologist for an examination. Card One, what do you see? "Ink Blotch or maybe a god to worship???? Don't you remember what happen to the Romans? LMAOAYL. |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 2:39 PM Milford Drug Bust (Milford, IA)---A 33 year old Milford man is in jail on drug charges. Milford Police say they arrested Jason Lynn Woodard for possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, possesion of marijuana. He's also charged with possesion of precursors to make meth, possession of stolen property and several traffic citations. Police say they stopped Woodard's car Sunday afternoon for a traffic violation. Investigators say they found the contraband during the stop with the help of the Arnolds Park K-9 unit and Dickinson county deputies. Woodard was jailed and authorities say additional charges can be expected. ( Copyright 2006 - KICD) |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 3:48 PM Then we need to make sure that he (jason) does not get out and do this again. but I still say that someone with more money is backing him. You can blame the parents all you want- but until it happens to you and your family you have no idea. You can try as you may to introduce your kids to other supposably nice kids and then before you know it they are into stuff with the wrong ones. And don't think that the wrong ones! are poor some of them are the so called rich lake kids. They get away with it because they have parents that are someone and you won't be that lucky unless of course you are one of them. Dickinson county needs to clean it up no matter what parents are involved. Is there someone who is providing money for this type of activity high up around here and everyone is afraid of them. Lets fight this now. |
| Earthling | life forms |
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 3:53 PM It is very interesting to observe youthful earthling female life forms encouraged by older earthling female life forms to terminate earthling life forms. We have observed many youthful female life forms that have terminated earthling life forms become older female life forms who regret terminating an earthling life form. We have transported many of these young earthling life forms to the planet of godhelpmewhathaveIdone which is located just south of Milford. Captain Hunyuck. |
| me thinks... | that... |
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 4:03 PM Captain Hunyuck is the most sane person on here when it comes to abortion. and jason should stay, but he wont, because you get more time for shooting an eagle than you do for having a meth lab around kids. The law enforcement a lot of the time cant do anything either, the druggies have so much power that they can 'get rid of' any problems they encounter. I hope we can bring all our brave soldiers home and send the meth heads out instead. that'd be coooool. |
| to | me thinks |
Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 4:17 PM I am not going to disagree with you that he will get out and alot of his charges have been dismissed in the past or just disappeared. Wonder why! But yes- lets bring home the brave ones and send people like him over there. The army is where he belongs- bring back the draft and draft all the ones that are sitting around making money this way or just not working and we are supporting them. |

Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at 8:53 PM It's called La Barca. We visited last Wednesday, the day they opened. Free chips/salsa. Daily specials. Nothing was especially (spicy) hot. Hamburger in tacos/ burritos/etc was only mildly flavored if at all. We'll go back again. They were having so much first-day trouble running their cash register it was funny. Lots of Spanish being spoken but they spoke fine English to us. |

I have a friend going to a Luthern baptism this weekend and someone else told her that was weird....that only catholics are supposed to baptized. Does that sound strange to anyone else? I suppose YEARS ago that's how it was..but nowadays, any religion does it. It's how children are accepted into God's kingdom, huh? |

Friday, November 10, 2006 at 1:14 PM I usually am not one to criticize a restaurant, but I ate at the new Mexican restaurant this week and didn't feel good all day after eating their enchilada...plus, it was kind of expensive for lunch...they were very unorganized, which sometimes happens in a new place, but in the beginning is when you should have "too much" help. I wasn't very impressed with this place...I vote for Marcos anyday over the new place...I don't have any intentions right now of going back, unless I start to hear rave reviews from other people, then I may be willing to give it another try....just my opinion !! |

| sl | baptism |
Friday, November 10, 2006 at 3:37 PM Lutherans get baptised when they are babies usually. As far a catholic (little c) that means universal church (at least that is what I learned in catechism). Catholic (big C) refers to the religion. Perhaps the Catholic that said they were Catholic not Christian had a "problem" with a born again christian? I have run into that...they think because they are "born again" they can do nothing wrong, (lie, cheat, etc.). The Lutheran and Catholic churches are really close as far as some rites are concerned. |
| Baptized | !!!!!!!!!! |
Friday, November 10, 2006 at 4:07 PM I am Methodist, and was baptized as a child. I believe that children are supposed to baptized in the name of Jesus Christ to go to Heaven. Although I believe that God is a loving God and forgiving God, and struggle with believing that he wouldn't take an unbaptized person into his Kingdom, if they asked for forgiveness of their sins, as we are all imperfect sinners. |

Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 7:34 AM "He who is baptised shall be saved" All christian churches,,,not just Catholics or Lutherans, believe and practice baptism. But just because your baptised, doesn't mean you can be a jerk and a terrible person cause you know you'll get to heaven. You should treat people the way you would want to be treated,,,thats not just religion, thats just being a good human being! |
| sl | baptism |
Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 8:35 AM I'm sorry I did not mean to imply that only Lutherans or Catholics believe in baptism. I DO KNOW that they usually baptise their children when they are babies. My daughter belongs to a Southern Assembly Of God Church and they "dedicate" their babies instead of baptising them, after they are older they let them decide if they when to be baptised. I think that is when they are old enough to understand and answer the questions at baptism themselves. By the way it is "He who is baptised and BELIVES shall be saved" emphasis on believes. That is why being baptised or not is not a guarentee of geting to heaven. You are right if more people would LIVE their religion insted of just showing up at church (but not living the what they say they belive) the world would be a much better place. |

Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 9:20 AM their own beliefs and we need to learn to respect them. If you have questions as someone in person. I want to say that the person that said lets collect pennies and send jason to Iraq is right on. I agree. He is going to try and blame someone else for his problems and the court will believe him and he will get away with this too. He has more dismissed charges than anyone I know. So who is paying who off to get this done. He tattoos minors and gets away with it. He provides stuff that will kill and he will get away with it. He should be put away for a very long time. |

Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 10:44 AM You know i was always told that there are several religions and that each person has the right to pick which one he or she wants to belive in.. thats what makes or country great .. we are allowed to make our own minds up with our someone making us do something or believe in something we dont want too and i feel that child abusers should be shot on sight .. but thats my thought i am not going to tell someone they need to think different .. to each his own....people let it go and quit with the bitching about what he or she believes in.... |

Saturday, November 11, 2006 at 12:07 PM People are just curious about baptism and asking questions about other denominations. I don't see anyone preaching or "bitching" about his/her beliefs. Sunday, November 12, 2006 at 11:32 AM most kids will find a way to get it no matter if people sell it to them or not. friends get it from their siblings or parents, etc. I'd like to add that while working in a convenience store that MANY kids are drinkin energy drinks that do just as much damage as alcohol. they cause rapid heartbeat, seizures, and in some cases heart attacks. There's been an increase in caffiene overdoses. they are also getting caffiene and herbal pills that do the same thing. they're barely legal highs. |

Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 11:07 AM Hello all, so ok, I had this problem a couple of years ago at the start of the cold season & now have it again, there is a cat inside my engine compartment, so when I tried to shoo it out with a broom, it went down under behind the engine somewhere & now won't come out, tryed going for a ride around the block figuring it would fall out but no such luck, any suggestions ? Thanks, & have a good day. |

Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 11:26 AM Don't shoo it with a broom - you'll end up scaring it more and it will NEVER come out til next spring. My advice is just let it be. He's probably nice and warm in there...if it warms up today or tomorrow put your car in the driveway and maybe he'll get out on his own. It won't hurt anything in the engine compartment. Good luck to ya' - I can understand how that would be an annoyance.. |

| Cat in engine | Oh brother |
Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 2:00 PM How bright is that. You NEVER start a car with a cat in the engine area. Entice it out with some irresistable food. Jeez. |
| Re: | Oh Brother |
Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 2:05 PM Hey now, I didn't tell him to go in there, so jeez to you, so oh well if he gets chewed up or falls out going on a long road trip, I don't much care for cats anyways, lol, have a good day. |
| come on now | cat in engine |
Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 2:50 PM Hey People -- come on..let's not get "catty" with each-other. Thanksgiving is near; let's be thankful no-one has gotten hurt due to posts on this forum. The cat in the engine: no, it's not smart to start the engine with the cat in there...but I have known many people whose cats were lost or who "adopted" a cat due to the cat being there..more than likely, he's not even near the engine..but near a tire "well" area...he can't get hurt if he's there. I have seen where the cats go. If this cat is like the others, he'll be fine. Also, I am curious..what was the spelling error in the SC Journal about cycle country? Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING FRIENDS! Travel safe and be thanksful we are free; we have lots of men and women in foreign nations fighting for that to continue. Let's not forget about all of them tomorrow (and always). |

| condo | Ol' Superiorite |
Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 10:30 PM I get irritated when I go by the condo going up by the bridge on 9 & 71 on the east side of Spirit Lake. Will local control cover these people confinement units going up within 50' of the lake. What are the people that can't afford owning a condo to live in parttime to do for an inexpensive place to stay for a few days or week that want to enjoy the area. There use to be a lot of cottages that could be rented and they weren't four stories tall and half a block long to block the view of the people behind them. I think the only ones left on Spirit Lake are on the east side at Sandbar beach. |

Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at 11:24 PM You better be glad that the condo's are going up dense is better than spread out. Would you rather have a ten story building on more expensive land or a bunch or 2 story condos going up like a fence around the lake. Besides the people who live in them pay alot of money to the city so they can complete projects like the courthouse and fix up roads. If you looking for a family friendly resort try trigs bay in arnolds park i use to go there for years and its great. |

Friday, November 24, 2006 at 1:22 AM I would just like to remind everyone to SHOP LOCALLY this holiday season. Please remember that your local business who collect sales tax contribute to our local school, etc. I'm sure it can be very difficult for some businesses during this slow time of year and we should all be thankful to have them in our community. Remember that these are the people who donate to fund raisers, schools and organizations through out the year so I feel we should help support them. In order to keep small business in the Lakes area, we have to shop locally. Please show your support as we have some awesome shops that offer unique gifts and decor this time of year. Hats off to Cabin Fever Gifts, Simply Charming, Design Elements, Enchanted Oaks, Mary's, BayView (forgive me if I have forgotten any)for staying open year around in order to offer Lakes residents places to shop. |

Friday, November 24, 2006 at 10:33 AM Are you nuts? Who can afford any of those businesses you listed? As far as them donating to the community, none of those donations benefit me in anyway what so ever, I have no children in school, I don't belong to any organizations. Shop Sioux Falls, save money, get more of a variety of stores, have a great lunch at someplace new and get out of this small town mentality for at least a day |

I've also seen them pop on ebay from time to time where they sell for much less...In fact, I don't know that I've ever seen one bid above $1000 on ebay. Anyone have a sense of what the market value actually is? |

Friday, November 24, 2006 at 4:31 PM First of all...I do not live in the lakes area year around, although I do visit year around. Now I want you to think what the lakes area would be like without any stores other than a basic grocery store and hardware store. It used to be that way. You had to go somewhere else for much of anything other than basics. Many folks are trying to make the lakes area a year around community people would like to visit. When visitors stop they want more than breakfast at HyVee and dinner at a handful of spots. There are many more options available now than inthe past. However...they won't stay open unless they are supported! You say it doesn't help you any. Well...they are employing someone. That is a step in the right direction. They pay taxes. That helps. Get to know the owners/employees. It makes it a lot more enjoyable shopping. All it takes is a "hello" and a bit of time to chat. Who knows...you might not only help support the community but make a lifelong friend as well. Please remember the season is one of sharing love and freindship. MERRY CHRISTMAS |

Friday, November 24, 2006 at 4:33 PM We can sure tell you aren't a business person!!! or a person who thought about what you just said. You remind me of a person I got to know quite well, if it doesn't benefit me, the heck with everyone else. The cities started out as small towns like ours and the reason they are big and sucessful today is because people in the community supported the small stores. Thank God everyoone is not like you. Move to Sioux Falls because we sure aren't going to miss your business.(pun intended) My, what small minds some people have. |

Friday, November 24, 2006 at 4:50 PM If you have a calculator in front of you, punch in 200 X .40 and you will see that it costs $80 for you to drive to Sioux Falls and back. That's right, on an average, it costs .40 for every mile to drive your vehicle. As the old saying goes, "your not the sharpest knife in the drawer!" |

Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 2:21 AM Nope, It Doesn't cost me no $80 to Go to Sioux Falls & back, maybe more like $18-$20 tops round trip, as my car gets like 33-34 a gallon on the highway, & with a 14 gallon tank, that is giving me roughly 400 to a tankfull, do up your little calculator thingy on that one, lol. |

Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 10:09 AM If you prefer to shop in those shops that is fine. But I really don't think that my 7 grandkids will have anything on their list from any of them. If I was buying for only adults then that is fine. But Target is where I find what they want. Yes, we have walmart and believe me I shop there all the time. But a trip to Sioux Falls to Target is worth any amount of money!!!! It is not just for shopping it is for fun too! |
| Understandable | =( |
Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 10:26 AM It's probably impossible to do ALL of your shopping locally, but the little specialty shops here are great for that hard-to-buy-for person, so do your best. The "fun" part of getting out of town is understandable. |
| to | everyone |
Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 10:26 AM If everyone in the Iowa Great Lakes would buy the majority of their Christmas list here, the sooner you will have lower prices, target stores, best buy, etc. These big companys aren't coming until they see they have a reason to. Big companys bring in lots of people. Everyone benefits, even the little business owner. |
| shopping | who cares |
Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 10:26 AM well lets see the person who drives there is right about 18 to 20 bucks round trip.... and as to the one who was talking about target well.. they are right too..you know every one including the high and mighty people of the lakes area shop outside the area its called " where am i going to get the best deal" you know if you can drive to a different town and spend 20 bucks in gas and save 100.00 plus dollars to do it then i would say it is well worth the trip if ya only save 10 bucks not worth it.. but at christmas time when ya are going to spend more money drive to the BEST DEALS.. hell you know butch parks does .. so the lakes area gets plenty of money from the people who come there during the summer months. so whats the problem with locals looking for a better deal then the prices from the tourist area.... think about all the high and mighty people who spend alot out of town too.... |

Saturday, November 25, 2006 at 1:18 PM Christmas shopping can be soooo fun !! Why do you people have to hammer things over the head so much ? It's easy, either you shop locally or go out of town. I personally do both....I shop locally most of the year, most of the time. I buy my groceries here usually at hyvee, I buy necessities and clothing and cds, etc at walmart, I buy cleaning products and other things at Dollar General, I buy gas at Kum and Go, and I go out to eat and have cocktails at plenty of establishments. Then, a few or so times a year, I may go to Sioux Falls or Mankato to buy some clothes, gifts, etc...BIG DEAL !!! I'm sure that everybody has this routine of thinking, so why are you all beating it with a stone ??? Be merry, be happy, be good to one another, and yeah, check out some local shops, if you like something, buy it !! If not, go to another town...How simple was that !! |

| Sophie | Timeshares |
Sunday, November 26, 2006 at 5:26 PM Timeshares are very hard to sell. Ask 1/2 what you paid for a red week and you might sale it. For a blue or white week...people have been known to give them away, plus sometimes, pay the next years fee to make it even more enticing. Possibly you could donate it to your favorite charity that is having a fund raiser. Hopefully you got a lot of use out of it over the years, which makes up for the price you pay for one, and the next person will enjoy it just as much! |

Monday, November 27, 2006 at 12:26 AM I saw the most beautiful Christmas tree I've ever seen accross from Oak Hill Marina on Highway 71. Looks like a vintage aluminum tree, very sparkly, with green lights around the window that it was in. Had to go around the block and look at it twice! Check this out. It is worthy of being on the cover of a holiday magazine! |

Monday, November 27, 2006 at 7:11 AM This lady has been putting up this tree for many years and it is the highlight of my Christmas. We always look to see when she puts it up and when the sad day comes and she takes it down. I also have a silver tree like hers given to me by an older aunt and it was purchased at the old Jacobs store in Milford. Still in orginial box and I put it up at Christmas too, I just don't have a light shining on mine. Keep putting up your tree, it is wonderful! |

| When looking for a | woman: |
Monday, November 27, 2006 at 1:44 PM When looking for a woman: capitalization, spelling, and punctuation should be used in posts regarding finding a woman, as to not look uneducated. Women like smart men. Also, women like honest men that actually stick by you when you need them. Do any of these exist? |
| To all you single men | Too many headaches |
Monday, November 27, 2006 at 1:56 PM Here's the 411 on the single guys in the area. I am a professional single lady in the area. I haven't been married before either. 99% of the men here have baggage, we are talking ex wives, going on their 2nd, 3rd, 4th ,5th,6th and/or 7th wife, kids from one, some or all the ex wives. The ex wives TEACH their children to hate the new woman and then the kids tell her: "You can't tell me what to do, you're not my mom!" or "My mom said I don't have to listen to you" and treat their father like yesterdays trash. Therefore the kids get away with murder, because the dad is to frightened that if he tells the kids what to do and / or punishes them, they won't come over anymore. Then you have the ex wife constantly finding excuses to call or stop over and even REFUSING to let the kids see their OWN father. Even when he pays $1,200 a month in child support, which she spends on herself! I have seen this for myself. Never again would I do it again. And this guy was a great guy. But I had to let him go because of the ex wife and the kids. I am not saying all the ex wives are like that, but 99% of them are. I have seen it and experienced it. One ex, she is 40, 3 kids, pretends to be the pillar of the community and school, well, she keyed my car and has even had her kids steal from me. She even has stolen stuff from my shed in my back yard! And she's been remarried for several years now. Jealousy, I do believe. Yes, we do indeed go else where to look. Do you blame us? |
| They're not all | like that. |
Monday, November 27, 2006 at 2:27 PM I am an Ex-wife that has always gotten along with her former husband and his new wife. We made a concious decision when we divorced that our profound love for our children would always prevail over any stupidity. I encourage my kids to have a relationship with their step-mother, and my ex-husband would encourage our kids to have a relationship with someone that I was involved with. I am truly happy for him that he has found someone that can make him happy, and would never do anything to jeopardize that. I have heard plenty of horror stories too. It's stupid. Life is too short. |
| To Ex Wife | You are the minority |
Monday, November 27, 2006 at 2:44 PM You are truly in the minority and other ex wifes can and should live by your example. You have taught your children well by being the better and bigger person. I agree with you too. But I will say this, that one ex wife needs to grow up. |

Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 6:44 PM I am in my late 30's single, never married, no kids and tried dating a man divorced with 3 kids. Didn't work. I can relate to the gal that went through that crap. This man was also a honest, loving, caring and all around great catch. Expect for his baggage. I think for men dating a woman with children is very different. Then don't tell their kids to hate someone. Men hate drama. Women seem to thrive off it. I agree that it is a jealousy she has towards the new woman. It is easier being single and depriving yourself of a child than to deal with hell. |

Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 7:27 PM You sound like a nice guy. I like your attitude about dating someone with kids, and not wanting to be their dad. Having the kids look up to you, have a friend in you, and someone to confide in if they choose to is the way it should be. That way everyone wins. Someone will be lucky to have you someday! Yet even when he was doing other things, he had such a great passion for doing it. I have that same passion, I have yet to meet a SINGLE, BAGLESS man, with the same passion from here. Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 8:46 AM once again, i'll try this question. does anyone know of any cool women looking to have a cup of coffee, lunch, or go to a good movie? this question seems to not get answered! not asking for child support, prenups, or a bunch of nagging.just a simple answer about someone who wants to have some fun in the lakes area! if you women think that dating a man with kids is baggage, you can't be that great a person. kids are always up for a good time, you just need to work them into your dating schedule! |
| ? | ? |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 9:02 AM Define "cool". |
| To: na na | cool women |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 9:14 AM What is the age bracket you are looking for? I don't live in the lakes area and I don't drink coffee. You may also want to give a "smoking" preference -- if you are a smoker and I'm not, that would be a turn off for me right there... Otherwise going out for lunch or a movie... I don't know why any woman wouldn't go for that --- what do they have to lose? |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 9:42 AM Does anyone else think the lower speed limit set on Stake-Out road is ridiculous? 25 MPH all the way to the church? And then only 35 practically all the way to Parks Marina? Now the traffic is about tripled on the stretch of Erie that is 35 MPH. What is the point anyway? Half the houses out there are not even occupied! And let's not even get into enforcement. I have YET to see a police vehicle out there. |
| Geeesh | guy... |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 10:22 AM Enough with the capital letters already. Going out for lunch or a movie will not get you a disease. Learn how to spell and use punctuation, that whole tirade you just went through made you look pretty uneducated. |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 10:36 AM It seems to me that you live in fantasy land! Say hi to Mr. Rork and Tattoo for me while you are there. Obviously you have never dated a man with kids and had to deal with the ex wife and bratty kids. Before you judge saying someone isn't a good a person, you sir better walk a mile in their shoes. No wonder you can't get a date, you are very judgemental. |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 10:58 AM I know plenty of professional 'cool' ladies in the area. But I am not telling. You DON'T name drop on here. You could be a stalker! |
| Speed Limit | 25 MPH |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 11:01 AM You're right that was dumbest thing they did. I don't think anyone obeys the speed limit on that road. |
| Boat | Works |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 11:06 AM Everybody should get up to the Lakes at least once this winter and head over to the "boat" at Okoboji Boat Works. Was up there this weekend and had a great time watching the Notre Dame vs. USC game. And you can throw in a line and fish while you sit in a heated ice fishing-shack-boat-bar. |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 11:41 AM ...to Okoboji when there was snow on the ground. I keep watching the web cams to see when there will be snow -- and then I fully intend to make it to Okoboji boat works to check out the fishing shack!!!! |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 1:18 PM It is a great place to hang out. It's no smoking, which is great. But there is a lady who waits until Butch leaves and smokes right inside. She pays the bartender to keep quite I think. |
| I dont | Go there |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 1:56 PM because of the no smoking thing, i dont smoke alot but when i go out drinking i like to smoke. |
| how rude | smoker |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 2:51 PM if the place is none smoking why do they let her smoke in there they should kick her out and fire the bartender for letting her |
| Stakeout Road | Speed Limit |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 2:51 PM I don't like this speed limit either...if they're going to enforce it, they may want to consider some stop lights out there...I would think that is the only thing that may work, they definitely should consider a light by the Presbyterian Church intersection...it is only going to get crazier with all of the residents who will be moving into the new development. What a hassle !! |
| lost at sea | you are |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 2:52 PM if you weren't lost at sea why can't you find a woman |
| smoking | hangover |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 4:19 PM I am so pleased that Butch has not given into the people that smoke. It is a treat to go there and not wake up smelling of smoke. Thank you Butch. I wish more places would do it. I think that if we wait it will be law that there will be no smoking inside anywhere. I know several states have already done this. Thank you for keeping my lungs cleaner. |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 4:48 PM Stakeout Road and the Presbyterian Church intersection needing a stop light? What about off of the YMCA Road (41st Street & HWY 71). Try crossing 50 mph traffic there. There should be lights at both. |
| Stakeout Road & Deer | Watch Out |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 4:51 PM I am happy with the new speed limit. I see deer on that road almost every night. Please be on the look out. If a driver is slowing down & flashing there lights there is a reason. |
| ymca | road |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 4:53 PM Is there a plan for a light at that intersection? I hope so I have almost been hit a couple times. If there is an accident it will be bad and more than likely there will be children involved. |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 6:16 PM exactly as i expected. i'm going to assume that the responces i got were from the real catch gals in the lakes area. i just don't see myself dating anyone with these attitudes and responces that i got! thanks okoboji for being so "just like i thought" |
| To na | na |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 6:32 PM you actually think some gal is going to give you her name and email address on here? Or that someone else would give you some gals name, number and email address? Not in this life time. On the computer you can be anyone you wish to be. That doesn't mean you are in real life. If you wish to meet a lady, go meet one! We have grocery stores, believe it or not we need to eat too! There are coffee places you can go, gas stations, heck, we need gas too! Go to a school event, lakes art center, must I hand hold you? Get off your koosh and start mingling. If you think some gal is just going to fall into your lap, you're sadly mistaken. You are surely lost at sea if you BLAME the Lakes Area for you NOT meeting women! |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 7:05 PM There are plans for stop lights at the YMCA intersection. The city guys were talking about it to me one day. And to all of you that know Dr. Baskerville of the area, please keep him in your hearts as his 18 year old son just passed away. It's tragic that something so terrible would happen to one of the most wonderful people in the world. |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 7:55 PM I understand that .223 is the caliber they want. I dont understand the need for Spirit Lake city officers to have a high powered rifle at their disposal. What could they possibly need these for? Whats next, armour piercing bullets? |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 10:07 PM I want a definitive definition of "Cool", one of the most over-used words for many decades. I want every single detail of what "cool" consists of. Ready? GO! |
| Definition of | cool: |
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 10:18 PM According to my Webster's: Slang for "cool" is: great, excellent, highly skilled, adept, informal, calmness, composure, and poise. Cool, huh? |

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 11:45 PM Uh oh. This has turned into an online dating site. Let's get back to the lake. That's why we have the site. Some of us are lonely; some connected. We area all over, not just at our central point for this web page: the lake. Meet the people with whom you would connect at places you would go for company: bars, or the library; art centers, or the grocery store. Not here. Some kids are baggage. Some will enlighten your life. Some people with baggage have great luggage. Some don't. You won't discern the difference on this web page. But let me address another topic in the earlier posts: smoke-free places. As a recovering smoker, I have to say this: the more smoke-free places we have to met and gather, the better. Even for smokers. |
| alan .223 | guns |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 4:14 AM the .223 is a small rifle that the military uses called the M16 the private model is called AR15 the cost is about $1000 per gun, in general the rifle is good at 50 to 300 yards and it is a small bullet but it is still more power full then a hand gun and fairly acurate most hand guns 50 yards is about it. |
| police/speed limits | please |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 4:21 AM if the police are not going to enforce the speed then you need to complain to your city counsel, they need to do more in milford during the day time that when it seems worst |
| Smoke free | in Omaha |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 6:23 AM This fall Omaha went smoke free with a few exceptions. It is wonderful how much nicer it is to go out to eat. There was even an article in the paper saying more people are now eating out. It is good for everyone...except those that sell tobacco. I would LOVE to see more restaurants and bars go smoke free. |
| McDaniels | mcdee@msn.com |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 10:05 AM I think that all of the bars and restaurants in Okoboji should go smoke free. Furthermore, it should be illegal to smoke in boats because boaters pollute the lake with cigarette butts. I believe that there is a petition going around to make this happen. I believe the Hippie himself is the number one advocate of a smoke free Okoboji. Go Hippie!!! make Okoboji smoke free. |

| OBW | Explain |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 10:23 AM I'm not from the area but how does the fishing shack work -- it's on the water - how or why does it float and all around the lake everyone is taking out their docks - but at the Boat works the docks are still in - are there different kinds and some can stay in the water all year? I'm just curious - and don't know how this stuff works |
| Yes... | enough |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 10:36 AM of the Hippie already. |
| boat works dock | na |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 11:32 AM Last year the docks at OBW stayed in all winter. They can be taken out but don't have to be. They are floating docks. The docks that people have at their houses are wood and can be warped by the freezing and thawing of the lake, essentially ruining the dock. |
| Hey | Thanks |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 11:42 AM I learned something new today - about docks. I see by the temp - it is quite chilly up at the lake. I can't wait to come this winter when there is snow on the ground -- I'll have to check out this fishing shack. Happy Holidays! |
| smoke free | yea |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 11:51 AM I recently went to Arizona and it is smoke free and it was wonderful. And I am a smoker. It may help me to quit. Great idea Butch. Could we just move the house a little closer for the bathrooms? |

| Re: smoke free | yea |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 1:27 PM Yes AZ voted to ban smoking in some public places..bars, etc...But it is not smoke free at all...It probably will not take effect until the spring...The smoke ban is such a good thing...The entire state of Iowa should jump on this bandwagon..if they have not already...cant wait to get back to boji..only 5 1/2 more months... |
| Arizona | Correction |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 1:45 PM ALL public places will be smoke free except for Reservation properties. They can be smoke free if they wish, but they don't have to. |
| Re. Arizona | Correction |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 4:25 PM You should check into the law that just passed in AZ...your wording is a little skewed |
| jo | iowan in ca |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 5:13 PM I've lived in Ca for 25 yrs and we've been smoke -free for at least 10 yrs !! Even smokers don't mind ! It's great that other states are doing it too ! We have nosmoking in all public areas including most beaches. |
| Re: correction | ?? |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 5:33 PM Where is it skewed. I just voted against the dang skewed thing in AZ. I know the reservation thing is correct, as is the no smoking in public places. I wanted the other version so that bar owners could use their own discretion. Let me know. |
| What?!! | =( |
Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 5:36 PM No smoking on beaches? That's a bit Big Brother. But since we moved from there, CA. has become even stranger, esp. S.F. |

Thursday, November 30, 2006 at 10:05 PM the taxes from cigarettes also play a big part in the bonuses for the politicians. I'm fairly sure they love their money. right? |
