WOW Fred! Nice hearing from you. How long has it been now? Almost 72 years? My how time flies. Yes, I too heard there was an Ihop going in at okoboji party and bridal. I do see it sold, and it was a good idea to take the queen out on the lake. I didn't see you on there though? I thought you were dead!

What an ungodly location to put in a IHOP, no parking, and in the summer you won't be able to get in or out.

A better location would be where "Maid Rite" is located. Lots of parking plenty of room.

Just wanted to say that even though the weather didnt cooperate, I had a blast. Saw the Cartwrights Sat night at OBW, it was packed. As far as Mrs Ladys goes, I have never been that impressed. Now that I hear that, ill never go back.

Yes I believe Fred was a Corn Farmer,Ithink he had a few hogs too.But its been so many years I cant remeber,I always told he had ties to several banks in southern Iowa.I know he was on the board of directors for at least 40 years.Retiring in 1956.I remember him coming to Okoboji and staying at The Inn.He played Santa Clause one year for my children, what special memeories we have of Fred.Fred was a very big lover of Sour Mash Whiskey, and loved to eat .Would be interesting to see if anyone had any pictures of him. When he dided I know he donated anonomously(SP) to the Amusement Park and that year (Sometime in the 40s)They used his money to Paint and reapair the Water Slide that went in to the lake,My goodness were have the years gone? Now its all Condos and Beer Joints.Oh well I guess they call that progress.

Beth,I have several pictures of the Robson family, and you are sure welcome to them. They owned quit a bit of land over in Tri Boji Brach area,What is now War Eagle Blvd. They left the area in the late 50s as Freds health was very bad,Some say he died of consumption,I never really knew.I do know he had a daughter and she was severly retarded,I remember them up here and seeing them at the Old Okoboji Store. And you were so right about Freds sour mash Whiskey,He was quite a party guy and a big hit with the ladies.I danced with him at the old Roof Garded Ballroom the nite that The Lawrence Welk Band was there. You should of seen the crowd that night. It was so hot up there and not a lick of breeze. But on we danced as if the night would last forever.Fred drove an Edsel and it was powder blue, quite a unit in those days,We went to the dance and had dinner later that night.I lost track of them after they moved away, would love to find any reletives of his,i was told he has a cousin or a niece living in the lakes region but dont know.Good luck in your search.

You have NO idea how old I am, and the history I've been involved in at the lakes area from probably before your time. Doesn't matter. You're not just talking about days gone by . . . it's personal/private stuff, so it's boring. Sorry! On another subject: Mrs. Lady's . . . I've always thought it was mediocre or less -- pseudo-Mexican. Taco House is better, but there's nothing like the real McCoy!! Okay ladies, your turn to blast me back =)

Does anyone have any information about Mesaba coming into Spencer. I remember last fall they were doing a study to see what they needed to do to get the SPW airport up to code and then never heard anymore about it. It would be wonderful to just have 1/2 hr. drive to get on a plane. It would be worth the extra money, since you would save on parking and gas.

I just love reading the postings here. I was raised in the lakes area and now live in the Twin Cities. I love the cities but boji will always be home. Luckily I have lots of family there so I make many trips there during a year. I found the postings about Mrs. Lady's to be a hoot. The food there has always been lousy. And rudeness runs in that family. Carole, the manager, is the daughter of the founder of Mrs. Lady's. Carole's mom passed away a year or so ago. Anyway, it sounds like Carole picked up where her mom left off...offending customers! :) I just love seeing the progress of the entire lakes community when I go "home". I remember when I was a kid and the day after Labor Day it was dead, dead, dead until the next Memorial Day. Now there is something happening year round. I remember my fun - but stupid - days in my twenties. Hanging out at Tiffany's and drinking "decent" drinks. Oh and who could forget the Hilltop? Partying until the birds were chirping and doing it all over again the next day. Thank God I outgrew that lifestyle but it was fun while it lasted. Peace- VW

Haven't visisted this site for awhile - didn't know there was a food war on - if you want good food either stay home or take your chances - the Outrigger is good - if you were treated rude somewhere it was probably because you were rude when you got there.

Wow I grew up there and had a great childhood. Loved all of the chances I had to do all sorts of things. Now living in a city where if you do not start your kids in sports in 1st grade then they will never make the team. The traffic sucks. The pollution sucks. the crime sucks. And people do not give you the time of day I guess we all have it bad. Oh it is extremely expensive to live in the city also. What a nice change in resturants, groceries, gas, and the cost of housing to be back in Okoboji. I can't wait to move back!!1

Being back in Okoboji for Winter Games was wonderful! My two friends from Nashville who came to Okoboji for their 1st visit have already told me they want to come back, especially in the summer...they had a great time and were impressed with the location and loved the people they met. They ate all their breakfasts at O'Farrells...wouldn't go anywhere else! We had a great time at OBW and can't wait to check out the Barefoot Bar in the summer. I grew up in Okoboji and am so proud of everyone who has made it what it is today! Keep up the good work.

How our manners have changed
Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at 8:52 AM
It's interesting to note how our online manners have changed over the years. On this guestbook, people have arguments, use obscenities, spam readers with bogus ads, and generally behave like it's 30 minutes to closing time in a bar. Take a look at the posts on this site from 5 years ago and you'll see that we were much more civil to one another: http://www.okoboji.com/guestbook/archive/view.asp?year=2001&month=02

Okoboji Bashers suck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tuesday, February 7, 2006 at 10:29 PM
I LOVE OKOBOJI....how can any one bash Okoboji ? It is absolutely gorgeous here...the people who bash Boji, must sit on their butts watching tv or playing video games and never get out to take a walk, sit on the beach, go boating, or take in one of my personal favorites, an Okoboji sunset....my gosh, if you did those things, then you would not be able to bash this beautiful area that I call----HOME !!! Got an idea for you, get on your boat, a friends boat, heck rent one if you have to, you take that boat out about a half hour before sunset, look deeply into the western sky and watch the beautiful vivid colors emerge from the sunset, after the sun goes down, hang out on the water for awhile and breathe in the air around you and look up at the sky and star gaze....if you don't appreciate Boji after that, then there is something terribly wrong with you...good luck...

Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 8:08 AM
I have an idea for all the people that don't like living in Okoboji. Why don't you all go live over in Iraq for a while and then let's see if you appreciate this area more. I think these people that bash the area really need to sit back and think about how grateful they are to live in one, this country and two, such a pretty area (I agree w/ the sunsets stated in an earlier post)! And, if you are SO unhappy here, please move, because you are not doing the rest of us any good! You aren't going to sway my opinions Home!

Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 4:16 PM
I was at Mrs. Lady's and know exactly what happened with the incident of hot sauce. There were only like 2 drops of hot sause on this guys shirt. I have been a great customer and was appalled at how they treated the nice young lady who simply had an accident and appologized. There has always been great service at Mrs. Lady's. The people that were sitting at that table were a bunch of morons. I would never try to get free food, or a free T-Shirt, beacause of a spill on my shirt....what a bunch of lies and I do also believe that they were scammers.... Have you ever heard of Stain Remover? The table was rude and the waitress did everything she could do. She finally got tired of putting up with their s**t....nobody should ever have to take that.....the customer is not always right... They deserved to get kicked out and there were many that were drinking. I know that I got tired of hearing the shit they were saying. Mrs. Lady's has always had great customer service and I have always been pleased with how the waitresses have treated me as a customer. I am sorry, Mrs. Lady's employees, for the inconsiderate jerks out there. The guy who it happened to didn't ever say much about it, it was his buddy who had to do the talking. Why would you say that it is o.k. and not to worry about it? You expected to get something out of it the whole time? I have worked in many places and it depends on the attitude of the customer whether or not I take an extra step. Some people like the food and some people don't. That is a personnal preference. But many people love it and continue to come back.

2 sidesalways
Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 4:31 PM
There's always two sides to a story, but why were there so many more folks who spoke against Mrs. L's than for it? That worries me.

love Mrs.ladyslovemrsladys.com
Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 4:39 PM
They spoke against it because of the not so good Management (I have heard), and their preferences in food. Most of the waitress do an awesome job and make sure that I am taken care of and that I am getting refills, etc. Don't judge the waitresses because of the management.

To Boji Basher Suck....
Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 5:37 PM
You don't need a boat to enjoy a Okoboji Sunset! Go to one of the state beaches or better yet the docks at Arnolds Park. Look for the positives instead of looking at what you don't have. Life is too short for finding the negatives in everything!

I wondered about stain removertoo.
Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at 10:42 PM
I also wondered what the big deal was about getting something spilled on your shirt accidentally. Big deal! Go home and wash it. They offered to pay for the dry cleaning, and you rejected that offer, wanting a "freebie" t-shirt or free meal. Get real! The shirt probably didn't cost that much anyway! I'm sure the waitress that did it felt bad about it, and if I was her, probably would have reacted to you freeloaders the same way. No, I am not sticking up for Mrs. Lady's. I don't even like the place. I have just seen enough idiots out there wanting something for nothing, and trying to capitalize off of an accident.

We ate at Mrs. Lady's on the Sunday of Winter Games. There were 10 of us, and all had a good meal; and good service. That has been my experience at that restaurant; and I'll continue to go back. I haven't tangled with the management, probably because I haven't tried to scam them. At any rate, all of the complaints that I've seen on this site over the last couple of weeks should result in a shorter wait for our group the next time we eat there. It seems that I always have to wait for a table. Keep up the good work Carol.

Either the salsa spill at Mrs.Lady's was "no big deal" or it wasn't. You can't have it both ways. I wonder how the guy who actually got the salsa stain felt about the whole thing, he probably couldn't get a word in edgewise. If the author talks like he types he probably hasn't shut up yet. Great story though - tell it again.

Also I would demand a free meal, Geeezzz If I were that manager I would of said What size shirt do you want I will be right back from the shirt shack with it and I would have bought him the best shirt with Okoboji on it I could find , just out of Good PR Cmon what are you people thinking thease good customers are your bread and butter.         Yey, someone is standing up for Mrs Lady's!! As a long-time employee and friend of the Hinders family (the owners)I would like to say on their behalf that they are AMAZING people! Carole has one of the most generous spirits I've seen. You can't blame her for not wanting to deal with drunk people who are looking for a free meal. Believe me, this kind of stuff happens all the time in the Lakes area and it does get very OLD! It seems that people will do just about anything for a "freebie"--nice problem. Another point I think needs to be made in a situation like this is that the waitress should not be blamed for your dislike of YOUR CHOICE of food. Have you ever waited tables? Have you ever had to deal with a dissatisfied customer? (let alone one who has been drinking)Accidents happen to all of us, and I think the waitress tried to handle it the best way she knew how..she offered a stain wipe and to have this man's shirt dry cleaned. They don't have dry cleaners in Wichita? He couldn't send a bill to Carole? Mrs. Lady's has been in business for over 28 years and we still have lines at the door and TONS of people who appreciate the service being given to them. My point: Karma, my friend. KARMA.

It looked like a little over and inch of snow that I shoveled off my driveway tonight. The grass is just covered in most places. I don't think there has been enough cold weather to give people confidence in the ice for driving anything more than ATVs on the lake. I don't think there is a parade of homes this weekend. They have the "better home and living" show at the Expo building. It's an exhibition for businesses to set up booths and you can check out what they offer (most are home and health related.)

Curious??????????????????
Thursday, February 9, 2006 at 10:58 PM
What's with all the construction going on in Spirit Lake? There are hundreds of homes being developed just south on Hill street and more to come. Where are these people coming from and what's drawing them there. what industry???

To whomever it was that got angry about me displaying my thoughts about a beautiful Boji sunset on the water in a boat is shallow...I didn't mean you have to be on a boat to enjoy it...I was just simply recommending some thing positive to enjoy about the lakes area...you don't have to get so angry about it...I too, enjoy the sunset from Whiskey Dicks or the Dry Dock's deck or from the beach....gosh, chill out...and you are missing out, being on the water is the place to be...

Meatloaf Pans.......Flying.

I saw quite a scene at Wal-Mart yesterday. Some poor lady was just trying to buy a meatloaf pan, and all the pans flew everywhere! Poor thing was so embarassed, and stood there and helped the clerk pick them up. She should have insisted on a free Wal-Mart t-shirt to compensate for the disaster.

Okay, this poor woman who had the "pan disaster" in WalMart. You all feel so bad for her and whatnot... then don't bring it up in the Okoboji Forum!! Now she's going to be even more humiliated because A. She reads it herself or B. Someone who knows her and reads it will tell her. "Pan" woman, if you're reading this, it's okay. I once had an embarassing moment in Walmart alone. I had an asthma attack of loud coughing and not being able to breathe. It was humilating.. so I ducked in an isle so no one could see me.. but I ducked into the MIRROR isle and could see my purple face and horror.. Anyways.. despite the fact I was being extremely loud and choking on my own uvula, NOBODY helped me. They just walked by and stared. I swore to my mother I would never go in there again out of utter embarassment. But, it's Walmart. Where else am I going to go for toothepaste at 3 in the AM? So, keep your chin up, Pan Woman, and laugh it off. I would have been in hysterics! :)

rafting up at gull point
Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 6:37 AM
I would like to ask, why do people insist on anchoring and rafting up at gull point, with millers bay just around the corner?? Gull is ALWAYS ROUGH and it is difficult to set an anchor...more difficult to bumper/tie up to another boat...and the beach is mostly rock so I would never beach my boat there. We have been anchoring in millers bay with great success...it is a nice sized NO WAKE cove, mostly protected from wind and boat traffic wakes....but I rarely see any real groups of boaters rafting up and really having a party!! WHY IS THIS? Have none of you been to a big lake like the Lake of the Ozarks ( Party Cove)??? I would like to personally invite everyone to Millers bay...get your boats off of Gull Point and into a calm no wake area for a realy summer party

What happens to the Jaycee's car after it falls through the ice? Is there a pile of cars in the bay?

LackeyLackey@msn.com
Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 1:58 PM
Yes, the cars pile up. Last year there was a Malibu Wakesetter that had it's prop ruined from one of the car's bumper.

Jeff Rnow in Arizona
Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 3:05 PM
The cars do not pile up !! The search & rescue pulls them out almost immediately. Where that car is sitting now is only in about 10 feet of water... maybe less.

There is only one car that they use, it is pulled out and then stored until next year. Lackey has had one too many (of what I don't know).

Use your head!!!!!!!!!!!
Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 4:45 PM
Now do you really think that the DNR is going to allow a car to sit at the bottom of the lake? Of course they remove it right after it goes through the ice. As I understand it, it is used for a drill for the search and rescue team.

Lackeylackey@msn.com
Thursday, February 16, 2006 at 5:47 PM
I work for the DNR and as of last year we said screw it. Now the cars are going to pile up at the bottom of smiths bay. The cars are great for fish habitat. As for the HIPPIE I have heard a rumor. I heard he had no clue where he even was this last weekend.

So now you're segregating the lake? That's just great. Do you sell passes to visitors and tell them which bays they can't go into? C'mon. People, you can go where ever your little heart's desire. It's everybody's lake -- rich, poor, visitor, or local. Oh, and by the way, if we come into a calm bay to ski while you're sitting there anchored, with a bunch of boats tied together, say your Hail Mary's. =)

To; Rafting Up @ Gull Point
Friday, February 17, 2006 at 9:08 AM
Miller's Bay is not as big as Party Cove nor are our lakes as big as Lake of the Ozarks. If you want a party cove go south. Been there and all it is a nake beer feast, not family fun. We use Miller's Bay as an nice bay to just float who needs to trie up and PARTY, that's what the bars are for. All I guess I want to get across is Lake Okoboji are not big enough for the big Baja's and the Party Cove type SO GO SOUTH YOUNG PEOPELE and leave Okoboji to the families and the ole ones.

Hey man...how did you know I have a Baja? Christ...I simply ask why people make any attempt to anchor at Gull...BECAUSE IT IS SO DAMN ROUGH ALL THE TIME! I won't anchor there!!! You certainly don't need to get naked or raise too much hell..but rafting up is a great way to meet people and have a great time. Gull is always a blast...tons of great people...but it is just so rough!! By the way, I don't have captains call on my boat ....IT IS LOUD ALL THE TIME. This summer I hope things are a little different...meaning we can get a few more boats into MIllers bay. Another great place, if you can get your BIG BAJA under the bridge, is Lower Gar...typically calm there. But shallow.... Look for SHIP4BRAINS

morons?who..me?
Friday, February 17, 2006 at 3:54 PM
WHY would you say a thing like that? I am as respectful to other boaters and lake dwellers as I can possibly be...I respect the rules of the lake...I can back my trailer in the water without making 15 attempts and I can load my boat on the trailer without screaming at my wife. I don't fish off the dock, I don't back my trailer over the dock...I don't back my trailer into others peoples trailers. I actually us bumpers when I tie up at a dock...I help people load and launch if they need it...I don't dump beer cans and bottles in the water, nor do I throw plastic bags overboard....I don't swamp people in my wake and I do know what NO WAKE means....I don't hole shot my boat when I am 5 feet from the dock...and I realize boats don't have brakes...( as I had some yahoo rear-end me under the bridge...HE WAS A MORON )...I don't get drunk as a skunk and take my boat for a top speed run...infact, I NEVER run my boat WOT...heck it never goes over 4000rpm. I DO turn up the tunes nice and loud when idiling along and dock hopping...I know how to properly anchor a boat so it wont drift...and if it does drift I don't let it hit someone elses boat...I don't run over others anchor lines and get them wrapped up in my prop, although I have hit a rock or two in my time....I dont beach my boat in the rocky sand of Gull Point ( those people ARE MORONS )....so...AM i A MORON because I have loud exhaust in my boat??

baja vs bayliner?Are you kidding?
Monday, February 20, 2006 at 8:04 AM
Come on now...sure, there are better boats than Baja...there is always something better. But dollar for dollar, Baja is one heck of a bang for the buck. But they aren't cheap and are very well put together. To find a better built sport boat, you will be looking at a much higher dollar Sunsation, Fountain, Formula or some of the West Coast Custom boats such as DCB, Advantage, ETicket...etc. Don't let the schmoes around here fool you into thinking Baja isn't right up there with the better high performance boats. But, be smart, and take them for a test drive! Compair them apples to apples! And buy the boat that best fits your needs.!!!! That is what is important.

My first boat was a 1985 Chris Craft Scorpion 168..a little girl, but it was a nice boat. Very well built. If I could find a 28-30' Scorpion or Stinger with twin engines I would snag it in a hart beat..but unfortunately all of them I have seen in the 83-87 year range are beat to a pulp. The lines of the older Chris Crafts are downright sexy. The new Chris Craft boats are awesome but are much more $$$ than I would consider spending right now, and they just aren't what I am after right now. But they are awesome. Till then I'll just have to stick with my Baja and deal with being able to run 74 mph....oh boo hoo

The point is, you can listen to the type of music you are in the mood for, without all the adds. You are beginning to sound like the boaters arguing about which boat is best. Give it a rest already!

blajablaja blaja
Monday, February 20, 2006 at 4:22 PM
You can't beat new baja or chris craft, great boats, but you can kick a hole in a bayliner. More and more people are experiencing the okoboji area and are purchasing boat. It's just not the elite anymore, the boaters are getting younger and the "old timers" can't handle it. If you don't like the big wakes or the waves are too rough, don't go onto the big water, stay near the shore!

To blah blah "blaja"and others . . .
Monday, February 20, 2006 at 7:35 PM
Is that what it's all about . . . who can make the biggest waves? So you're telling the "old timers" to stay closer to shore. Not the brightest bulb in the pack, are you. Where do you think your asinine waves end up? Furthermore, not all of us who don't appreciate the UN-natural wave action are old timers. If you want to make big waves, do most of us a favor and go play in the ocean. Even West Lake can't take much more of the beating it gets from the boy toys.

CampingSpring - Summer
Monday, February 20, 2006 at 10:26 PM
It is soon spring the birds will soon be comming back and the snow will be melting , trees will be budding and grass will be greening. I can't wait to be camping in the parks and hiking the trails and fishing the lakes and cooking out the steaks. Cruising the bike trails will also be a treat , I won't even mind the heat and running the beach in my bare feet , all this will be very sweet , If you think about the good times and all the fun times Okoboji has to offer its realy hard to beat! Quit bashing everything get out of the winter blahs visit a Hawwian live web cam site and get your mind set on good weather and your burdens will get lighter than a feather , soon your friends and buds will be together you will be done beating each others heads together because of cold weather , so think of roasting weinies and girls in bikini's and sweet little wahinies ! That said! have a nice week end !

Yes, I cannot wait for our only 2 months of decent weather again. And then we can then do it all over again.

2 months of decent weather?Where do you live?
Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 10:59 AM
You must not live around here if you only have 2 months of decent weather a year. You can get 5 , maybe 6 good months at the lake. It might not be 85 degrees with no humidity every day, but quit whining. Any day at the lakes if it isn't snowing is a good one.

Camper, I think everyone wants the Hippie back. I heard a new rumor about him recently. I heard he stole a Barefoot Bar sign a couple of years ago. I dont think anyone knows about it, but he has it stashed in the attic of his A-frame cabin. I heard after he buys a cuiser boat, he is going to put the sign on top of his MOJO boat. I didn't know hippies could even swim. This guy is something, cant wait to meet him.

Let me remind you Monkey scored real high 3 dimensional crap. (He had to take an unemployment test. Internet has been good.

Most of the same people post on here as well. They just change their "name" once in a while to protect their lack of innocence. okobojibb is NOT user friendly. This one is user friendly, perhaps too much so. Makes it too easy to post idiot messages. Usually indicates someone who just likes to see their "handy work" in print. And someone said you come back here to see the drama . . . what "drama"? Be nice if there WAS some. Bet if you went back and counted you'd find that monkey name on here more than any others. Try it.

sorry don't like it,,,this format is so much more user friendly, i used to check it daily like i do this site,,,and i really don't care for it at all,and i haven't checked it in ages,,i like the fact how you can just pull this up and scroll through the messages. the ones i don't like, i just scroll over...its simple people,,don't read it if you don't like it!! now back to better things...estimations on ice out?? i guess mar. 21st.

Variety.I like it.
Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 8:45 AM
I like okobojibb.com. I like the fact that whatever you want to say gets posted. They don't censor what they think is worthy. I agree that this format is easier to use though, but I like variety. I am going to stop checking EO to see if the message board is back. Sick of being disappointed. My guess for the ice-out is March 15th.
