Boji GirlThis Weekend
Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at 8:27 AM
Is there anything going on this weekend at the Lakes? We're going up to rake and close up the cabin. (Sad, but we have to do it) But, we also want to have a little fun too! So, if there is anything going on please post it. Thanks.

Well alrighty then:-)

Yes I have eaten at Woody's and your right the pizza is great! I love the way they cut it into square pieces. I'm usually a 2 piece pizza person but the last time we ate there we ended up eating the whole thing!

Woodies is good pizza. But the best pizza ever is at Zeno's in Marshalltown. It is like woodies but better!! It is very expensive but well worth it!!! They also ship pizza's out. My cousin in Vegas has them sent to him. YUMMIEEEEEEEEEE!@!!!!!!!!!!

Love Woody's!
Thursday, November 3, 2005 at 12:45 PM
Yes, Woody's is awesome! My teenage daughter and I ate a whole extra large one by ourselves last summer. Also good is Rocky's Pizza in Iowa Falls. The one in the landscaping place (forgot the name of it) in Spirit Lake is good too for a more Italian style. They have awesome service too. The owner went out of his way to be good to us.

Your right, Rocky's is awesome, and this conversation is making my mouth water. Rio Pizzaria's (in landscape place) is the bomb too!

Any one can run for any office right? It is a hi paying position right? (HAHA) So the people that run must have a vision for what they believe in right? So let's be happy that we live in a country that we have choices. If you think that you can do better step up to the plate. Make sure YOUR vision is the perfect one and that you will make everyone in the lakes area happy. GOOD LUCK. We all want to be successful. Thank God that there are successful people that can show us the way and we can use them as mentors. We are so lucky to have so many successful men and women in the lakes area. All of these people did not sit around picking on people they learned from them good or bad. Life is full of learning lessons take from people and learn, good and bad. Stop bashing and start learning. Have a beautiful day.

Back a few years ago, when a certain group tried to stop the hwy 71 project, they tried to load up the election with people that wanted to block it. The voters weren't fooled then, they won't be fooled this time either. I am tired of wearing this "I'm being picked on" routine. If anything he has brought it on himself.I hope that the courts finally see this for what it really is.

To Sharon at O'Farrells, you do a great job in upholding the O'Farrell name at one of the oldest businesses in the lakes area. Unfortunately, some very ignorant people enjoy taking cheap shots when they have the opportunity. Don't let them get to you. Stand up for what you beleive in, and keep on running one of the best little joints in Okoboji, Iowa, and the United States of America...Which is by the way a FREE country! You will have my vote on Nov. 8th

I am absolutely looking forward to the summer of 2006. It can't get here fast enough. Let's not forget going to The Reagle Beagle on our nights out. Sometimes on Sunday nights there is a drunk man in there dancing barefoot alone! You have to see it to appreciate it! You can drive the boat, but we won't go for a swim, since you don't know how. As for me, I wish I could plug the sun lamp in, but we don't have any electricity. I am going to put the harnesses on the cats, and take them for a walk. See you in the summer old friend!

TO: Year Rounder--Lots to enjoy-
Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at 9:47 AM
I have been a year rounder for 40+ years; with the first 12 years the family only owned a 3 season cabin. We would visit on weekends and stay at the Old Holiday Inn that was great as a kid we would play in the snow and then swim in the heated indoor pool. There is a great park in Estherville for snow sports and there is one south of Milford. What about cross country skiing or just walking on the lakes; snowmobling and the winter games. We enjoy taking our portable fireplace out on the lake making a fire and just playing on the lake or just sitting out there enjoying on the lake around the fire. Clean off a space to ice skate. Winter, spring, summer or fall the lake areas are a beautiful; not fast lanes!!

Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at 2:51 PM
Could you or somebody please tell me what political/Civic experience Jim Hentges has? I don't think standing outside his bar greeting patrons and checking ID's on weekend nights is enough experience to be Mayor of Okoboji. Mary's work with the planning and zoning board gives her a good background for mayor. My vote will be for Mary.

I don't think either Mary or Jim would appreciate ANY of your comments. I'm sure they're both perfectly nice people, but Mary's work does give her the edge. I doubt if either of them are puppets to anyone. It's time to lay off of Boober. Being Mayor of any town is a thankless job, and like it was said before, a City must make it's decisions based on law and current ordinances, not harrassment, discrimination, etc. So use your brains. You need someone who has good vision. Leave the past out of it and move onward.

West Oaks resort right by the emporium has condos that you can rent cheap in the off-season. They have a couple bedrooms, furnished kitchen, jacuzzi, fireplace, etc. Also a swimming pool in one of the buildings. It is a really good deal. We stay there when we come up in the winter.

Do ya think they will hire Morten Buildings to build it? The entire area looks so cheap with all the TIN BUILDINGS. Very sad!! The lake is beautiful........but the people who live there seem to cheapin it by building so cheaply in the towns surrounding it. Go to other gorgeous lake spots around the country and you will see building codes that prevent PRE FAB construction!! Stop it already, you are the keepers of the area and you are destroying it.

You go girl!I agree
Monday, November 14, 2005 at 1:27 PM
With Menards nearby, you can build a much cheaper building than a Morton. The building codes need to be tighted up a bit but good luck! Look at the new Okoboji city "shed". A Morton with a couple of bricks. Maybe the new administration will influence the codes. Stay tuned......

I was looking for a summer rental in the classified section of this site when I noticed a couple of houses that are for rent on there that are NOT insulated. The last renters had astronomical monthly utility bills ($500 just for electric) and that was before the latest increases in energy. They thought the rent was out of sight and then they got the utility bills for these places. Unfortunately for the renter, the landlord knew enough to get a signed lease. So be forewarned and check the last utility bills with the power companies here for any houses you are considering in this area. They are happy to give you this info. Some of these houses have NO insulation and it is impossible to heat them in the winter or cool them off in the summer.

I just got home from doing some fishing on the Lake. Went to West Okoboji, was fishing in a boat, Nice and calm on the lake today, looks like snow coming, anyways, a strong gust of wind came from the North, and almost blew my boat over, I stood up and held on to the stern tightly! After the wind calmed, I sat in the boat quietly, and heard a voice. A whisper, Go the distance, yes, I really did, go fishing and he will come, where was this voice coming from, then a man appeared, he was wearing a white robe, and walking on water, wow, what an experience.

I saw the man in the white robe, I did, I really did! Toto, where are you, Toto!! I was looking for my dog Toto this morning as I was walking through the woods, near Gull Point State Park. The wind was blowing out of the North very briskly, for a moment I thought I was at the North Pole! Oh my there Toto is, the man in the white robe took him. So I got into the boat with the man who was fishing, who saw the man in the white robe too. Anyways, he opened his talkle box, and something magical happened, He said close your eyes, so I did and we ended up going to ever never land, and it was not Arnold's Park!

We will be at OBW and will be dancing with the cartwright brothers!!! Do you know the dates for the games? We need to call for a motel room. The winter games are more fun then the 4th of July. Kind of early for you to get the keyboard smoking like that! You are right about one thing, there is no way that Target, and the rest of these "superstores" are coming to this area. I don't know why people insist on starting this crap. And to whoever mentioned the Outrigger, it makes me mad that I'm not up there this weekend to come in for the prime rib. It is the best!         Someone will always be smarter. Their house will be bigger. They will drive a better car. Their children will do better in school, and their partners will fix more things around the house. So let it go and love you and your cicumstances. Think about it. The prettiest woman in the world can have hell in her heart, and the most highly favored women on your job maybe unable to have children. The richest woman you know-she's got the car,the house, the clothes-might be heartbreakingly lonely. So,love you. Love who you are right now. Tell yourself, I am too blessed to be stressed."Be blessed ladies and pass this on to encourage another woman."To the world you might be one person, but to one person you just might be the world."         What other area is growing with future population to double within 10 years along with the Tourist season that FYI is not 3 months anymore...it starts in April and ends in March!!! You should see the Hunters here during the hunting season...I've never seen more out of state plates in October and November with guys in blaze orange! This area is a year round playground and resort area now! I think Target and others see this and are more optimistic than the "ROOMER Lady" within 2 years I bet you see a Target and other national stores...This is the last piece of the puzzle that the lakes area is missing...RETAIL...we have everything else..housing boom...population boom...cities growing...all we need is real RETAIL!!! Other than Wal-Mart

localto wrong
Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 8:37 PM
You are right ,yes there is alot of traffic all year but Have you ever been in retail or owned your own business????Sounds like you have not. What has killed the retail here is The walmarts,The targets. The big Hyvee stores,This is all big business, and there is still not enough people around here in the winter to support those big new stores you see coming, and by the way they are not.If you really wanna play the business game in this area,i suggest you buy one and find out how really tough the winter season can be.You as a resident have no clue about the utilties , the insurance, the taxes, the employees, all those things still stay the same and actually this year are higher, the utility and insurance companies dont adjust thier biil to us ,,,according to the people in the area,So as fr as your pipe dreams of all the chain stores coming ,you are still crazy, take off the rose colored glasses

Friends have the "layout"?What????
Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 9:58 PM
Why does everyone's "friends" have the proposed layouts and plans for the Target Store that is supposedly coming to the area, but no County or City Officials have them? I think that is kind of strange. I'm sure someone in county/city government would have some of these "plans" before everyone's friends would. And the "Roomer lady" is a man, just so you know.

Mad about a Target store - why? You have Wallmart/ condos all over - restaurants; bars; very few free beaches to go to - have to pay anywhere you go so get over it and you'll all go shopping there. Get real - what is selling out Okoboji are the people selling off their land for more condos - get real people - this lake was put there for everyone to enjoy - love it or leave it - if you've gone once you know you love it so quit whining and work on keeping it for everyone to enjoy!

Very well said Scottys Girl,Lets keep Okoboji a Fun Family place and stop making it A "Playground for The Rich" after all it was the families, generation after generation that built this place,Only You Can Make A Difference,So lets pull together and be proud of what we have, and say No to anymore Big Business,Lets support our local Businessman(or Women). And next time you pick up our local shopper(Which John does a great job with) browse the pages of the paper and just take a look at all the things the SMALL business man donates around here, such as,All the School Activities,The Scouting programs,The elderly Programs, and the list goes on and on.They donate that stuff after.....They meet thier mnthly bills and feed their own familes, and sometimes there isnt alot left ....But,you know what????THEY BELIEVE IN THE COMMUNITY,and strive to help make it a better place for you the citizens.Next time you have a wild hair to hop in your car and head out to Sioux Falls, ask yourself,Can I buy this Locally?????Remember we need you in order to keep up this aray of Stores ,Bars,,Restauraunts.Ok I have rattled on enough but I think you get my point.Have a good Thanksgiving weekend.

People have had the last 20 years to save the Lakes from Condo's and Development, and it hasn't happened...In fact just in the last 3 to 5 years the opposite has happened...The growth and Sales have exploded. Spirit Lake now allows developers to re-do wetlands out by Kuoo in order to have land available for growth...Makes no sense to mess with the Natural wetlands and marshes...ubt when its for the almighty dollar man will do anything and thats why you have the current status of the Lakes area. I am like you I don't see positive in all the growth around here, but it is too late to stop it...That should have been done back in the early 90's. Enjoy your taxes, condo's and lake view!!!!

Most, like probably 90% of the people living in Arnolds Park, Okoboji, that are living in "trailers" are not what the old term "trailer trash" meant...they are definately not! Those trailers are what "lake cottage" use to be. Just summer homes, cottages on the lake are long gone for the average (or above average person, I should say). If you have a lake home GREAT! But, if you can afford a second home, weather it be a trailer or cabin..GOOD FOR YOU! If you choose to live in a "trailer" for your life style, again "GOOD FOR YOU". P.S. I don't live in a trailer...but I have a lot of summer friends that do!

Oklohoma will be playing the Holiday bowl as the Big 12 #3 team. Nebraska will be playing the in Alamo Bowl as the Big 12 #4 team. Michigan is going to the Outback Bowl as the Big 10 #3 team which leaves Iowa Big 10 #4 to play in the Alamo bowl Vs Nebraska. Both Iowa and Nebraska won their final two games against rivals. While not a BCS game, this will be one of the better bowl games. I read the initial line would be -1/-1

According to the USGS site that samples lake height and water temp, West Lake is still at about 42 degrees. It has to drop 10 more before freezing.

Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at 1:08 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I saw a dock post sticking up about 20' off shore from the Dry Dock? Since the water temp has 10 more degrees before freezing, that should be plenty of time to have this removed. Oh yea, have a nice, smiley day!
