Monday, August 1, 2005 at 3:16 PM Lyle Donkersloot was a wonderful kind hearted and gracious man. Those who got to know the "real" Lyle were the lucky ones. Those of you who did not, that's too bad, because you missed out on one heck of an experience. Lyle truly was a man who could put a smile on any girl's face and who could forget that voice. Love it !! To Nick and Delia and the rest of the family, may God try to ease your pain at this time of sorrow. Please every one show respect to this family in their time of grieving. Thank you. R.I.P. Lyle.. |

Monday, August 1, 2005 at 11:01 PM Yes, Lyle was killed by a drunk driver. And Lyle, hasn't drank for years...give the family and REAL close freinds their space. Don't show up at the funeral as a "want-a-be". The funeral will be at Good News Community Church in Okoboji this Saturday. He has done a lot for the community and will be very missed. I don't know yet, but I hope R.D. is doing the service. |

Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at 2:13 AM Sending my best wishes to The Donkersloot Family at the untimely loss of Lyle. He was an awesome man who always had plenty of words of advice and was a great person. Rest in Peace and Keep Ridin in the Sky. |

Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at 4:41 PM I have known Lyle for over 30 years. He was a wonderful and kind hearted man. Bigger than life! In a word he was charismatic. He was a man that made people talk about him, and want to be with him. He made people smile and usually had a smile himself. My last words to Lyle were "God bless you!" His last gift to me was the vision of him popping the front wheel of his Chopper off the ground. He gave a grand smile and wave good bye as he reached 60 mph in a half a block. The roar of the Harley and the smile and wave.. what a wonderful picture of a bigger than life man. See you on the other side old friend.. |

Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at 10:44 PM I was also schocked to hear about Lyle. Things like that aren't supposed to happen to such neat people! I didn't know Lyle well, just as a customer of Indian Motorcycles, and from seeing him around town, but I always enjoyed him. He was a wonderful guy, and always had a big, beautiful smile on his face. My favorite memory of Lyle is the Sunday this Spring that he played the piano during the church service at Calvary Methodist. R.D. overheard him telling someone that he could play the piano, and asked him to do it, and being the good sport that he was, he obliged. It was awesome! I will miss driving by Indian Motorcycles and seeing him outside, and seeing him around town on his bike. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. I cannot imagine what they must be feeling. We love you Lyle - rest in peace! If there is a time when you are thinking of driving somewhere after drinking alcohol, think of this senseless accident and DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! |

Lyle always had a hug for me and a great big smile! Everytime I visited the shop he told me to "pick ya out something" Bless his family and friends. Lyle, God Bless You. |

Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 5:49 PM I too knew Lyle, I have for as long as I can remember. He was a wonderful man who would do anything for anybody.... he might of looked tough and intimidating, but he was just a big teddy bear. From the times that we watched him ride his bikes into his house (up a ramp), lol yes I said into his house, going to his shop to see him and seeing his wonderful smile, hearing his awesome voice on the radio, and seeing him and his group driving up the hill to his house after a trip. He will be missed forever, and remembered always in the hearts of those who knew him. I am truly glad I got a chance to get to know him and can honestly say he was one of the most genuinely nice and greatest people I have met in a long time. |

They are all at peace. Ride on "Dash and Lyle" won't be a day that I don't think of either of you fondly. If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven and bring you home again. |

Sunday, August 7, 2005 at 3:09 AM I guess Lyle touched the hearts of people everywhere! I was blessed to have met here in St. Louis while attending one of his "Brothers" funerals. Even during a painful time for him, he managed to have that wonderful smile on his face and words of comfort for everyone else. My heart goes out to his family this was such a terrible way to loose such a wonderful person. Monday, August 8, 2005 at 7:35 PM As a cousin, I knew Lyle all of my life. One of the most memorable times was when we went fishing all night in Silver Lake, Iowa. (It really wasn't much of a fishing trip since we were fishing for bullheads.) More recently, I saw Lyle in the airport when we went to meet Lyle's sister who was coming home for a Grandmother's funeral. He had a wonderful smile, and the joy he brought to so many people is inspiring. Thank you to all who have shared memories |

When I heard the news I felt my heart break with the sound of cracking thunder and then the world came to a stop and turned mute. Memories of long walks, sunset dips, laying in the yard looking at stars, slow dancing, and riding the combine talking of memories and dreams flood my mind. I always believed you would live forever, I always believed you would be there, I always believed in you to grow old. The only solice I find is when I think of your leaving us while doing something you loved and knowing your friends who left before you will be there to welcome you with open arms into the Kingdom of Heaven. | what happened | last night |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 9:40 AM Heard there was a terrible boating accident around 2:00 as this morning? Anyone have any info. on this? Names, etc?? |
| resident | Concerned |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 10:37 AM The accident on the lake last night is one of many more, if somthing isn't done. The lake law enforcement is not enforcing the law's of boating at Okoboji. There are too many boats on the lake and no RULES. ( boats over capacity, high power boats speeding when a lot of boats are on the lake, boats speeding at night after they have been drinking at one of the bars on the lake, people drinking and driving.) There are too many boats on the lake at night and the LAKE LAW should be that any boat up on a plane will be ticketed.( If there drunk and they hit someone the chances of killing someone is a lot less. And the law states if you test over .08 and driving you are intoxicated and you should be ticketed no different then driving a car.( that law is not enforced at Okoboji!!!!)The only people to blame is our law enforcement on the lake and if something isn't done there is going to be a lot more fatalities. |
| Summer Local | Responsibility |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 11:23 AM "The only people to blame is our law enforcement." That is an outrageous statement. What about people taking responsibility for their actions? The people to blame are the people that drive their boats when they are hammered. I don't like DNR as much as the next guy, but there is no current law against driving a boat "on plane" after the sun goes down. In fact, it is legal to have a skier behind your boat 30 min. after the official sunset. So how do you blame law enforcement? I realize that 4th Amendment standards are a little lower with the DNR than with street police, but it would arguably be a 4th amendment violation for DNR to stop a boat simply because it was going fast. Change the law before you blame DNR. |
| The few ruin it for the responsible | Responsible one |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 11:30 AM The responsible people always get shafted because the irresponsible people screw things up. Do i drink while i am boating? Yes, i have a few glasses of wine while boating around the lake. i would hate for that enjoyment to be taken away because of idots who get hammered and run into things with their boat. In short, i don't know how to solve this problem, but i am sure it is NOT to totally restrict drinks from boats. That would anger me as someone who lives for Friday afternoon boat rides with the family and a bottle of wine. |
| also a local | also have a few drinks on the boat |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 11:42 AM OK, Everyone is assuming that the driver of the other boat was intoxicated. It's a greater possibility that they were, then not (considering the time of the accident) but, don't jump to assuming that, before you know for sure. Maybe that person was just scared to death. I agree, it was totally wrong to leave the scene and I hope that they are caught. How could you sleep at night knowing you killed someone. I also enjoy having a few drinks on the boat. I would hate it if we couldn't. We also always take the boat if we are going out to dinner or drinks at night because, I feel it's safer. We will still continue to take the boat. |

Friday, August 12, 2005 at 12:57 PM It appears a message was left on this page a few days ago indicating that Miller's Bay Restaurant has been sold and the new owner is taking possession October 1, 2005. While it is true the restaurant and lounge are for sale, it has not been sold. To clarify the situation, the Simpsons are asking $595,000 for the 11,020 square foot building that includes the restaurant/lounge, two apartments with vaulted ceilings and a 2,120 square foot unfinished one and one-half story addition with full basement. There is also a detached two-car garage. The Simpsons also have an adjoining quarter acre lot, more or less, with access to the canal that is for sale for $100,000. My name is Dan Connolly. I am the listing agent for the Simpsons. Dan Connolly 515-453-5417 |
| all the | innocents |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 1:56 PM Amazing how many people who only have a few? drinks who are not able to drive so instead they take their boat home after the bars close. It was only a matter of time until this sort of accident happened. I have seen one very large boat in particular, that goes at least 80mph, tearing wide open across East Lake in the middle of the night with a very drunk operator. We need more police on the lake. |
| DJS | private |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 2:12 PM Sorry to the folks whom enjoy a drink while DRIVING a boat, but I think the same laws should apply to boats as other vehicles. NO DRINKING AND DRIVING!! Public intox should also apply, I know it takes away alot of "fun" for some, but will protect innocent ppl, out to enjoy the lake not their buzz |
| Boating accident. | How awful! |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 3:03 PM I cannot believe that someone could drive off from an accident no matter how minor or major that it was. How selfish of someone to do that just to protect themselves. It does make you think that they probably had something to hide, which is no excuse. I hope they find whoever did it fast, or better yet, the person would do the right thing, and come forth and take responsibilty for their own stupidity. |

Friday, August 12, 2005 at 3:24 PM I have known Lyle for over 20 years. He was my friend, my neighbor at the lakes and one of the best people that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I was lucky enough to spend some time with Lyle on my annual trip back to the lakes this summer and have a ton of great pictures of him which I will be sending to Nick to share with friends. My love, thoughts and prayers go out to all of Lyle's family and friends. No one could tell a story like Lyle could; no one could make me laugh like Lyle did; and no one's smile will ever light up a room like Lyle's. Rest easy my friend. |
| New to the Area | tragedy |
Friday, August 12, 2005 at 3:28 PM Let's face it people, the DNR can't catch every idiot out driving stupid on a boat no more than the law enforcement on land can. I wish they could, but they just physically can't. We are all assuming the run away driver was intoxicated. So where did they get intoxicated at?? Does that establishment have any responsibility here? The bars on the lake make plenty of $$ every season, but are they letting the $$ get in the way of saying No to a customer that has had too much to drink? |

Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 12:24 PM What happened on the lakes this week? Don't people know it's stupid to drink and drive, let alone drive a boat in the dark? |
| Feeling disbelief | ! |
Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 2:41 PM I just can't believe that the person who caused the accident can live around here, because there's too much to hide. Someone knows something. Please don't protect the person who did this. Come forth because of your conscience, not because there's a reward. My first thought was that the boat had to have had damage to the hull, and that maybe the reason they haven't found it, is because it sank. If the driver was drunk, he would have probably drowned. Time will tell...a boat just doesn't disappear. |

Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 6:29 PM This boating accident and the prior accidents on our area's lakes have been very devastating and difficult for us all as a community. It makes all individual's feel unsafe on the water, especially after sunset. These speed boats that open it wide open across the lake scare the absolute hell out of me. I don't think people realize the responsibility that goes a long with operating a water craft some times. However, every one needs to step back and allow the investigation to go on and hopefully these immoral boat operators will be caught. It doesn't make it any easier when every body jumps to conclusions and starts rumors. Facts are what will bring a solution to this accident. So any one who knows what truly happened you should come forward and clear your conscience. There are many people hurting right now from this accident and there is some one out there who can bring justice for this family. Please people do the right thing !! |

Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 7:10 PM I just got back from Sturgis. It was hard to attend this year knowing that I wasn't going to bump into Lyle, or even have a chance to call him to visit him at the Super 8 where he always stayed. (I've known Lyle for 10 years.) A friend of mine was at the Broken Spoke on Tuesday night and she said the Fryed Brothers were playing and asked the audience if anyone knew Lyle Donkersloot. The crowd roared that they did. Then the Fryed Brothers sang a ballad in honor of Lyle. My friend said there wasn't a dry eye in the house including the guys. I'm bummed I missed that tribute to Lyle that evening, but then again, I've shed so many tears for him already. I want all who read this to know that Lyle was missed in Sturgis this year, big time, by many, many people. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all his friends, like me, who's lives he touched in such a special way. |

| who's to blame | local |
Monday, August 15, 2005 at 3:07 PM I'm as upset as anyone about the boating "accident" on West Lake, but a lot of people are trying to place the blame on the # of boats on the lake, the size of the boats on the lake, the speed of the boats, and the??DNR??. First of all think about it, we have auto accidents EVERY day of the week. They don't change the laws everytime one happens. as for the .08 law and the DNR not doing their job inforcing that, I do believe it's .10 on water. Be that as it may the DNR is doing their part to cut down on drunk drivers. As for the size, speed and amount of boats on the water, the boat they are looking for is about 22' not 40' and the boat that got hit was traveling @ 15-20 and we don't know how much faster the missing boat was going. I do agree that maybe a "no wake after dark" law would help,, nothing is going to STOP all accidents. I know I'll be ripped for this, but had the driver of the boat that got hit been drinking??? If you want to refer to auto laws, if he had he shouldn't have been there in the first place. I'm not saying he was or wasn't, just saying that before ya'll rip on the laws and the DNR ya better know the facts. |

Monday, August 15, 2005 at 5:50 PM according to the Iowa Boating Regulations No person may operate a boat or water ski under the influence of alcohol or drugs.Doesn't this mean zero tolerance? I guess I didn't know all the ins and outs until I looked for myself and were there horns being blown every 2 minutes? If nothing else I guess we all better review the rules of the water before heading out. Here's to better sailing. |

Monday, August 15, 2005 at 9:52 PM Would this boat have damage or did Mr.B fall in the boat and die from injuries or was he found in the water? There are tons of stories and not very many facts. I saw 4 white and red boats on my travels today between Algona and Estherville and they all had covers and looked very respectable but to me all boats look the same. Do we know what kind of damage, hole of anytype? |

Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at 7:12 AM The driver of the boat which carried the victim and his wife was tested for alcohol as a matter of course in an accident of this nature; he was found to be under "no such influence". Further, the 15-20 mph speed of the craft was well within proper protocol and safety regulation guideline. |

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 11:34 AM I am all for a NO WAKE speed limit after dark...or at least 20-30mph limit. Other lakes I visit have speed limits....and the small size the Iowa Great Lakes warrants such rules. I am all for a speedlimit during day light hours too! These lakes are too small for 30' and larger boats...and any boat traveling in excess of 60mph. My boat will run 74mph if I want it to, but I am responsible enough to know the dangers of traveling at such a speed on a small body of water. I do have to laugh at people blaming this on alcohol. True, alcohol COULD have been a factor. But so could stupidity, poor visibility ( it was VERY DARK, was it not? ) or even the lighting not working on the boat that was hit. There are a million factors that could have caused this. Excessive speed in a watercraft is dangerous enough during the day. Factory in the darkness of nightfall, and you are just asking to hit something....shoreline, dock, or another boat. Someone here mentioned the bars being at fault. Give me a break. YOU ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS. A bar tender shouldn't have to babysit every schmuck who has too much to drink. Until we all live in a perfectly safe world, be smart on the water or on the road. Be aware of the driving conditions, be aware of other vehicles, be aware of your surroundings and be responsible for yourself. No on else will be. And to the moron that failed to stop and help the people he/she harmed.... I hope you like hiding! |
| Nice | Comments |
Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 1:27 PM Finally, someone that is realistic about this whole horrible issue. Only the individuals hiding now should be blamed and punished for this. There should be a law in effect to slow boats down out there at night, and during the day but until then - Please, slow down. I can't count a night that I don't hear some clown on the lake tearing it up. I personally don't care how big the boats are until they cut me off at 70MPH.(my boat will do over 70 as well) You can't try and place blame on others for the actions of morons. |

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 1:45 PM I guess I would also like to commend the DNR for what I feel is a great job policing the lakes area. I am against drunken boating. But I don't think that if you are idling around the lake drinking a beer or having some wine that any of our DNR will take issue with you. It's usually the intoxicated clowns that take off in no-wake zones or who fly across the lake in a crowd that we all should agree need to be penalized or removed. |

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 2:12 PM I've just been reading the posts here about the boating accident last week, and I'm amazed at the ability people have to distort the facts and create new ones. Just so you know: Their were three couples on the boat returning home from an evening out, and the driver was NOT drinking (they utilized a designated driver). The gentleman that was killed and his injured wife were in the back of the boat, standing up and watching the meteor shower. They all did see the boat a ways away and wondered if it were the DNR because it was going so fast. I guess if any of us saw a boat at night going that fast, we would wonder, too, but would never suspect the driver would be so irresponsible as to not watch where they were going. Apparently, that's what happened - the driver simply drove over them from behind, hitting the victims, flying over the end of the boat, and continuing on. I know I've often see large boats moving quite fast, and I don't know how anyone can see over the top of them. Clearly the driver didn't care that he couldn't see. By the way, both boats did have proper lights, to silence that rumor. Hopefully the driver's conscience (or that of one of the passengers) will evenutally get to them and they will talk about it. I would assume alcohol was a factor; certainly no one would be enough of an idiot or that careless without having their judgement severely impaired. So put your rumors and negative speculation to rest about the victims and everyone keep an eye and ear out for any clue or information about that driver. May the families of the victims find peace and solace in the caring of so many. |

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 3:38 PM I sincerely hope they catch the hit-and-run boater. I can't believe this tragedy happened nearly in front of Village West, where we've stayed the past 2 summers. Of all the irresponsible, cowardly and criminal things to do...run over the top of another boat in the middle of the night and keep GOING? And never come forward? I'd like to see an APB out for not only the boat, but anyone who purchases a prop or other equipment for a possibly damaged, 22' boat should be required to provide proof of the size and color of boat. I know this sounds a little radical but it might be the only way to find the criminal. The idea the runaway boat sank a little further from the accident isn't one I'd considered...though would it have sank THAT fast? Surely someone might have heard something besides the wreck. Again, I hope they find this freak and that they not only lose their license to operate ANY power vehicle for the rest of their life but that they get an extra year in jail for every DAY they kept silent about this tragedy. |

Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at 6:56 PM I also think there should be laws governing the speed of the boats and also checking the consumption of the drivers on the water. I have seen a couple of large boats on East Lake that are going wide open, 80 or more, with no regard for the safety of anyone else. This is in the middle of the night and also in the daytime. With as many boats that are out on the lake now, I am sure that this accident is only the beginning. |

So put your rumors and negative speculation to rest about the victims and everyone keep an eye and ear out for any clue or information about that driver." I don't think that asking if the victims lights were working or not was NEGATIVE. As a matter of fact, I was on the water that night. Not on Okoboji, but another lake. The sky was clear and it was still VERY VERY DARK. Talk about NEGATIVE speculation!!! You admit you ASSUME alcohol played a part in this. Is that Postitive speculation? What about fear? What about panic? There is no excuse for someone leaving the scene of an accident like this. NONE. But I can see it happening...sorry everyone...but I am suprised something like this doesn't happen more often...alcohol or not. There is ONE thing that can help to avoid such accidents and that is a strictly enforced speedlimit after dark. Drunk or sober, if you are idling you won't cause much damage. Everyone needs to understand, not everyone uses a boat every day. Most are lucky to use their boat once a week, three months out of the year. Many people use their boat once or twice a year. Most are not trained to properly use and navigate their boat. A good majority of the people you see on the lake haven't the slightest clue what they are doing on the water. There are no centerlines, no sense of direction, no speed limits...no organization PERIOD! Personal watercraft are even a bigger issues. How many people actually know what the red and green lights really mean on the bow of your boat?? Do YOU? Sorry to stir the coals. But there is nothing that burns me more than someone instantly assuming that because there was an accident that someone must have been drunk. If he/she was so drunk, how did they do such a fantastic job of hiding from the DNR, Police, and the public? DOn't get me wrong...he/she could have been drunk...could have been sober...could have had 2 drinks...could have had 15. He could have just left a bar or could have had a case of beer on ice in the cooler next to the passengers seat. Who knows. If people scream and yell enough, fools like this will destory our privilage to consume alcohol on the water. I enjoy a cold one or two while putting around the lake. Everyone does. Don't let alcohol be the blame when there are other more important issues that would make everyone safer. |
| drinking | on the boat |
Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 6:59 AM Why on earth is it ok to drink on a watercraft and not even sitting in a car? To someone's point, drivers of boats are oten less experienced. Things get out of control quickly when boating. Stupid to drink wile boating -- it should be illegal. |

Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 8:48 AM Granted they are saying that the boat was probobly only 22 feet long,,,but one person here does have a good point about the guidelines on the water and how it truely is amazing accidents don't occur more often, with no center lines,,,,etc....we are out in the water a lot and I am amazed at how many idiots there are out there,,,and just because their boats are bigger,, they can just pull in front of you in line at the bridge,,,and zoom through with a wake...or not respect your right of way,,,,(whatever the right of way it) many time we have been clearly making a b line in one direction and a larger boat will look directly at us and drive across right in front of us!! And like he said the inexperience,,,people have to respect the water and learn little things like what all the buoys mean,,,I think new and inexperience boaters just don't know,,,they just get in their boats and gooooo, its to bad the local marina's couldn't put together a little book to put with the boats and watercrafts they sell,,,to point all those little things out,,,even if its just for our little lakes,,,it could help out for other lakes as well.... |
| Little Books | For Boating |
Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 12:49 PM There are books for boating and it's called The Handbook for IOWA Boating Laws and Responsiblities. It is the OPERATOR'S and OWNERS responsiblity to know these laws and get them. I would encourage everyone who operates or owns a boat to get one of these and all of those who have written on this message board. Most who have written on this board about laws are so inaccurate it makes me sick. Go to the DNR hatchery, county recorder, or Lake Patrol Station to pick one up. Reading this book may shock you about boating laws and the person who wrote about 4th amendment rights. |

Does anyone know what the final outcome was? |

Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 6:41 PM It is amazing to me that we are sustaining the Park. The museum, Queen II and park are all vital to the area but the board today is going about this all wrong. Has anyone seen their brochure? They state it was miss managed in the past! Even if they could prove it was miss managed, why would you make such a negative statement and try to raise money! This area is a positive place that since this new board has come on, it has been nothing but depressed and their brochure supports this theory. We are supposed to place our faith in a board of successful local business people due to their reputations. Well if you are willing to place your money into reputation of backstabbing and under minding people then we should support the park. Otherwise until a new board comes on my friends and I are not sustaining anything but our personal accounts. |
| Law breakers | don't read? |
Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 7:24 PM If law breakers don't read, then the mass majority of boaters don't read either, which would classify them as law breakers. Most don't have the slightest clue and the rest just stay the heck away from others and putt putt around the lake |

Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 7:29 PM What does the DNR boat have to do with any of this? Get with the times, that happened in the mid to late 90's. It's a closed case and the stern light was tested and not enough illumination was the outcome. That's what happens when boaters don't evaluate and check their equipment. Take extra bulbs out with you!! |
| michaelbrainard | michaelbrainard@imt.com |
Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 9:20 PM People, people, people. When approaching a boat from behind, especially near shore, what do you see? Possibly NOTHING. Even if the stern light is working. If you are near shore, what else do you see? House lights, street lights, dock lights....and one itty bitty white stern light mixed in with all of the other lights. You can't see the bow lights because they are in front of the boat, obstructed from your view at the rear. This is a VERY EASY THING TO MISS! It has happened to me a couple times....SOBER! Luckly for me, I was barely moving and was able to navigate out of harms way. Had I been doing 40-50-60...not a chance. I will say it again. A no wake speedlimit or 20 mph limit is needed after dark. I know a bunch of people will rake me over the coals for supporting this.....but i would feel much safer. |

Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 11:25 PM Why are there no law enforcement DNR out actively looking for drunk boaters at night? Everyone knows that if you want to get smashed at the bar, drive your boat. You'll get home without being bothered by DNR boats, cause everyone knows that the street cops in the lakes have scared most people from driving their cars drunk cause the cops do their job, which some disagree with because they think they have a right to drive drunk cause its the "lakes", but you don't have the right to take someones life. More and more I am actually glad and proud that the cops have known something for a long time that most of us are now just beginning to understand, Drunk driving is not about picking on people, its about saving people! DNR it is time to do the same on the water that the local cops do on the streets in the lakes area!!! |

Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 11:44 PM How do you suggest the DNR go about this? Should they stop every boat at night? Which by law they can. Its not realistic though. Boats don't drive left of center or right of the solid white line. Basically the only way they will get pulled over is faulty lights, speed and distance, and just plain stupidity. The DNR has,in all reality, prevented many, many accidents on the Lake. Just their visibility alone, will help deter and has definitely deterred people from going over the line. Have you ever wondered if its the area, the atmosphere, the bars, the booze, the party side of Okoboji that creates this? However, we must not assume that alcohol was the factor in this unfortunate accident. |

Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 11:53 PM Why is it so easy for some of you to point fingers at the DNR? They aren't the problem in this, they are trying to solve it. Friday, August 19, 2005 at 9:38 PM I have been on the dock by the Barefoot Bar and the docks by the downtown area. I have personally seen people that were too drunk to walk, stagger over to their boat, fall in, fumble to start it, and take off across the lake. If you try to warn them about drinking and driving, their reply is "I will be okay. I am driving my boat." This is no secret. Everyone that lives here has seen it. This is not only a few people, it is a lot of people. Please, let's get the lake patrolled just like it is on the roads. The next accident will be at Winter Games. The town is full of drunks, tearing across the ice, on snowmobiles. We need a lot more officers here before more people die needlessly. There is an increasing number of people coming in all the time. Also more drunks. This drunken boating and snowmobiling is way out of hand. They should have the same penalties as drunken auto drivers. You cannot drive your car with a beer in your hand. It should be the same for any driver of anything. Lets get the booze off the boats and snowmobiles. |

Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 12:07 AM Point is that during bar closing when most drunk boaters are boating home, the DNR has a skeleton crew on duty. I have a buddy that is with the DNR and stated that in his opinion they should have 3 or 4 boats out between 10:00pm and 3:00am, and they don't. And they don't have a law enforcement DNR officer out during these times, just summertime helpers that don't have the training and experience that the law inforcement Dnr guys do. Yes they do prevent things, and no they can't prevent everything, but the more out there during the primetime hours of drunk boating the more people would be detered to drive drunk on the water to begin with. And the more careful most people would be knowing that they are being watched for violations. |

Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 1:06 AM My whole take on this hit and run on West Lake; some RICH KID had to much to drink, hit the boat and PANICKED. So he called DADDY to bail him out. They got the boat out of the water, stashed it and called a close friend that would come and fix it and tell no one. It has happened before, when the rich kids go bad, the parents will do whatever it takes to hide the evidence and blame someone else! Money is POWER and with power, you make your own rules. But in REALITY, you have nothing and YOU ARE NOTHING! This man that you killed will HAUNT you every waking moment of your life. He will HAUNT you while you sleep and HAUNT all of those that helped you escape! May you and those that helped you be tormented with what you have done. For when someone kills, that person (or child) will HAUNT you. Never, ever leaving you alone. Because you stole their life, you cheated them and you hid! YOU ARE A COWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even with your money, you can't buy your way out of that...being a coward! |

| My | Opinion.... |
Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 9:14 AM Well since we are sharing our opinions about who we think did it, I think that it is somebody influential in the community.... I think that they were out either by themselves or with somebody.... they were drinking out on the lake, the accident happened and they are scared to tell anybody about it. Something like this happened years ago, when it finally came out who did it.... it just so happened to be a local lawyer. People always jump to the conclusion it must be a kid just leaving the bars and who was partying all night, it seems like lately we have been having more problems with "older" people than with the younger.... I think when we finally find out who did it, we are all going to be shocked. |

Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 10:48 AM Since the DNR are short of help at night why not all of us stick together and turn these idiots who are leaving the bars drunk and stupid in. That is why there are numbers on the boats. They have a name behind the number. It's funny how money can by silence. But God will get them in the end and probably all of us for speculating. |

Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 9:11 PM I just saw on exploreokoboji.com ,under news, that the Milford guy that they arrested for spreading the HIV virus has also been with at least a dozen more Okoboji women. According to the news at this site there is at least a dozen more local women that are being tested and receiving counseling. They also rounded up some more of the dancer? at Zippers, where he hung out, for testing. The guy's picture is also on there. Looks like there is more than drunks to beware of in this community. |

Saturday, August 20, 2005 at 11:26 PM Oh My GOD. Ban this, stop that, make this illegal, make that illegal...blah blah blah. One law will stop this....A SPEED LIMIT! Anyone caught breaking this law beyond a specific point loses boating rights on the lake for the season, pays a fine...etc etc etc. Especailly at night. Banning booze in boats will do nothing. It has never stopped anyone from having beer in autos...has it? NO. And it never will. Nor will it stop people from drinking in bars and then boating....IT WON'T WORK . It won't stop people from dropping anchor at Gull Point or Millers Bay, jumping in the water and floating a cooler full of Bud Light and drinking all day..WILL IT?! Heck no. Someone else here said something like this : people get killed in cars every day....one person dies in a boat and everyone jumps to conclusions and tries to stop everyone else from having fun because of ONE IDIOT. Please, do not think I am minimizing this horrific tragedy. I really am not. There are ways to remedy this problem but we don't need a bunch of radicals jumping on band wagons. Think about it. Oh, and for the exhaust noise limit..what is that all about? Has anyone ever heard a Harley Davidson??? Sit at the Wharf or Boji Boat works, and wait for a pack of bikers to cross the bridge....you think the open exhaust boats are loud?? Give me a break. If loud pipes save lives, I am opening up the exhaust on my boat to make it louder. |
| sober boater | common sense |
Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 9:09 AM The idea of making new laws because of this boat accident is absolutely ridiculous. The driver of the boat has obviously proven that he/she does not obey the law (leaving the scene of an accident) so what makes all of you extremists think that the driver would obey new speed or alcohol laws? New laws only punish and take away the rights of the innocent. Those who break the law will break ALL laws no matter how many laws you have. It's time to stop this ignorant thinking and concentrate on finding and punishing this person, not the innocent. |
| to : sober boater | michaelbrainard@imt.com |
Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 10:05 AM So, Sober Boater do you not think a speed limit at NIGHT is a good idea? |
| so I am | an extremist? |
Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 10:51 AM It is not extreme at all to ban alcohol while boating. Of course it would not stop all law-breakers, but it WOULD be a step in the right direction. I worry for you if drinking is so precious to you that you are afraid of a law to make it illegal while using a watercraft that can kill someone.... Drinking while driving an auto is STUPID. Drinking while operating a watercraft is STUPID. If you think otherwise, you are immature and not a realist. YOU CAN BE IMPAIRED AND NOT REALIZE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Jayhawk | rage1@mchsi.com |
Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 11:03 AM I would agree that a new law or ordinance will not stop anyone who chooses not to obey laws in the first place; however I would concur with Michael that having a speed limit law after sunset would do potentially eliminate or reduce the possibility of a terrible tradegy from happening. There are near misses every day with the boat traffic on our lakes. Factor in darkness, compromised depth perception and vertigo and I would have to side that a slower pace of boating traffic at dark could create enough awareness that someone who might want to go fast after a night out would think twice about it. |
| a great | idea |
Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 12:43 PM A speed limit at night is a wonderful idea. Makes a great deal of sense! |
| Michael Brainard | michaelbrainard@imt.com |
Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 1:00 PM Jayhawk and others; thank you for your opinions on the night time speed limit. I would like to express why I think a daytime speedlimit would also be beneficial. In an automobile, on a highway, all vehicles are operating at similar speeds in the same direction....withing 5-10mph at least. What happens when you are traveling at 60 and you come upon somoene traveling 20-30?? You know what happens. If you aren't paying attention you nearly rearend them. You nail the brakes, swerve, swear a little. Same thing on the water, except on the water, there are no other rules governing your direction or location, and no brakes...you can go anywhere, at any angle, at any speed. I can also say, most boats under 23' have no business traveling over 60 mph on anything but glassy smooth water. I had a 20' Baja that was capble of exceeding 60...and it was not stable at that speed in any kind of chop. Throw an inexperienced driver in it, alcohol, darkness, stupidity, rough water.....whatever variables you think may play a part in dangerous boating...and you are asking for trouble. There is nothing worse than cruising on the lake 20-30mph only to have another boat overtake yours...passing you going 60-70+...and generally traveling far too close to your craft...then having to fight the wake. Just my opinions...not trying to be a radical or extreem. Just voicing my experiences and opinions. And yes, I do like a cold beer in the boat. SO THERE> |

Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 3:30 PM I don't know where people are getting this there needs to be a speed limit on the water. There is according to the boatsafe.com website. 1.Do not exceed 5 mph within 100 feet over 5mph they should stay 50 ft apart. 2.you should not exceed 10mph unless vision is unobrructed more than 200 ft ahead. that also includes the front end of the boat. 3. on inland lakes and federal impoundments Do not exceed 10 mph with in 300 feet of shore. Don't people look at rules before the speak? I'm learning more and more about water safety each time I read on here.I think there should be no boats on the water after dark.Period.You go out for supper go before dark if you're taking the boat |
| michael brainard | to LISA |
Sunday, August 21, 2005 at 9:41 PM Don't people look at the rules before they speak? What kind of comment is that? Why are other areas mandating speed limits? Because of safty. Lake of the Ozarks in MO has a 30 mph limit at night...and the water patrol down there doesn't let ANYTIHNG SLIP. NOTHING. NO WARNINGS...NONE. You get a ticket or kicked off the lake. Read what you just wrote...is it specific? Not at all. What is unobstructed vision? Does that include darkness? Rain??...etc...etc...etc. A speedlimit at a specific time is SIMPLE and easy. Water patrol can easily monitor your speed via radar....and if there is a NO WAKE rule in effect after dark, people violating it will be very easy to pick out of the croud, don't you think? Anything on the lake that actually looks like it is MOVING is breaking the law. Simple, eh? I think so. There is nothing wrong with boating at night if you are careful and respectful of others. Another note.....most of use went through drivers education classes in High School....then we took tests to get out license...maybe even had to drive for the DOT...boating is a bit different. Buy a boat, dump it in the water and go, educated or not. There are no signs, ( speed, stop, yield, turn...etc ) nothing directing you once you are on your way. Do people know the rules? No..they dont. It is more obvious ever time I go to the lake. A 20 page book of rules and regulations doesn't do much either. Maybe you should get out on the water with the DNR and pass them out to people. |

Monday, August 22, 2005 at 5:10 PM This is only my opinion; It doesn't matter if there was a speed limit on the lake or if alchol was banned from boating. ONLY insecure and irresponsible people break the laws. Because they think the rules don't apply to them. They feel as the world owes them something. They feel they can do whatever they chose when they chose! Rich or poor, ONLY ONE thing is different between them. The poor can't cover up their tracks and hide things. The rich can...Always have and always will! It is NOT what you know; it is WHO you know! Everything and anything is for sale. You need a get FREE out of jail card, you make a call. When you are poor, you have the book thrown at you. And you will be made an example. But if you are rich...ahhh, poor thing, don't worry no one will ever find out. Oh, by the way...I could sure use $$$$$$$$$. You can tell me this is all a lie, but wake up people and smell the coffee! What in God's name are you doing with your double standards? There are 2 SETS OF RULES, one for the poor/middle class and a whole other set for the rich. And those same rich people are the ones that sit next to you at church and are judgemental. Throw the book at them, they say. Yet when they do wrong, quick hide it and get the check book! Not all rich people are bad, I can name several that are REAL CHRISTIANS, not POSERS like several others I know. |

Monday, August 22, 2005 at 7:39 PM You think you have problems now just wait til ya all get your new water park and 580 new condos. That should put a few more boats out on the water. I think the DNR does a wonderful job out there. They deserve a pat on the back and a atta boy. They should not have to babysit adults on the water at night !!!! Keep up the GOOD WORK !!!! |
| michael brainard | michaelbrainard@imt.com |
Monday, August 22, 2005 at 8:22 PM I think, a speed limit WOULD indeed stop people....if the punishment was great enough....like I said, kick them off of the lake for a YEAR. Next level would be to yank their license. Sorry but the punishment should be extreem! Same for operating while under the influence. There is no place for excessive speed or drunks on the lake, especailly at night. Who is Mark Stockdale? Sorry for my ignorance! |
| lisa | ggdmnbun@ncn.net |
Monday, August 22, 2005 at 8:48 PM Hey Michael, I didn't say I wasn't a boater just I don't drive a boat nor do I go boating after dark. I do enjoy boating very much if I have my family with me on a not so crowded lake and away from the lakes area. |
| Yank their | License? |
Monday, August 22, 2005 at 8:56 PM Once again we have another misconception with boating. What does a license have to do with boating? You don't need one! Yank their license? That can't be Michael! There can be no relation to a driver's license and boating. Thats 2 different chapters in the code of Iowa (321 and 462). Look them up! Sometimes your consequences to all these laws you want are unrealistic and would never pass in a legislative session. |

Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at 9:09 AM Tuesday, August 23, 2005 Sheriff: Suspect Wanted In Fatal Hit & Run Is NOT From Lakes Area (Spirit Lake)-- It's a slow process, but investigators are gradually narrowing down the list of possible suspects in a fatal hit-and-run boat accident earlier this month on West Lake Okoboji. Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun told KUOO news Monday a suspect being sought in the case is NOT from the Iowa Great Lakes Area. Numerous rumors have been making the rounds since it was announced last weekend authorities had seized a boat believed to have been involved in the crash. Kevin Baskins of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says investigators have spent the last several days analyzing the boat and trying to reconstruct just how the accident took place. He says it's a very time consuming, meticulous process. Baskins and Baloun say they hope they'll be able to release additional details very soon. No charges have been filed yet and no arrests have been made yet in the case. A funeral service for Doctor Michael Brosnahan of Perry, who was killed in the crash, was held Monday in West Des Moines. His wife, Jill, was injured in the crash. She has since been released from the hospital. |

Was this person ever charged? |

Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at 3:08 PM Just a note from Perry, the hometown of the accident victims, Broz loved the lakes & Broz loved to boat. His home there was open to all. He would not want his ACCIDENTAL death to become a shouting match between other lake lovers nor would he expect laws to be passed restricting the freedoms of responsible boaters in his name. The person responsible will be dealt with utilizing the existing laws. It was quoted this week at one of the many services or in one of the numerous news articles that Mike's Okoboji ritual included toasting his wife Jill with "It doesn't get any better than this" Okoboji is a lovely resort town. I owned a place there myself until just recently. I wouldn't change a thing........I don't think Mike & Jill would either. Sit on your dock, sit on the shore, raise your glass & remember...if you are in Okoboji right now....IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS! More laws will not make Okoboji better. It is tragic but it was an accident.Let this go. |

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at 11:54 PM I have been following the news posts regarding the very unfortunate fatal boating accident on West Lake. I do have one question. Given it was about a week before the 29yr old driver of the boat was found, how could they charge hime with DUI after the so much time has passed? I am very supportative of the DNR and bringing this person to justice. However, I was just curious if there was additional information that was not shared. |

| Lyle's poem | na |
Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at 11:56 PM I didn't get a chance to see the poem either. I am a writer and a friend of the Donkersloot's....Is there any way that maybe this poem could be incorporated into the Memorial DVD of Lyle's funeral, life, etc...I'm sure that Nick and all of Lyle's friends would love to read it.....hope somebody that can make this poem public again is logging on to this website some time soon....still so hard to imagine that Lyle is gone....feels like he is just on "vacation" or some thing...been looking around corners waiting for him to appear...reality is taking it's time sinking in, I guess...take it easy big guy !! |

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 4:50 AM I think they can charge the boat driver with intoxication based on interviews with maybe bar employees and I would say the passenger in his boat is probably stating the driver was drunk. |

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 7:14 PM How do prices jump so fast? Does the gas that was already in their gas tanks go up in price? To me it seems like a little bit of price gouging (not sure of spelling) if they have already paid for and filled their supply tanks prior to the hurricane. Just curious. |

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 7:26 PM TOUCHED BY LYLE. Lyle: I never knew who Lyle was, Until the day he died But I went to his funeral anyway, And I admit, I had to cry! I listened to his children tell, How Lyle loved them so! And his friend, the Pastor knew, T"was heaven where Lyle would go ! His army buddy came from the Eastern shore, He told how he & Lyle served in the U.S. Army Corp. How Lyle never shirked his duty Or wasted anytime. He knew that what he had to do, Would turn out more than fine! As a Harley Cycle rider, he had lots of friends He counted quite a few. They came to mark his passing, the east, the west, The north, the south, more than he ever knew!! 2000 people watched the video of Lyle's life, and it cut through their heartstrings, Like a big old hunting knife!! Have you ever seen an El Forester or a big Hell's Angel guy, Bow his head or shake his shoulders and break right down and cry? Well I did that day, Inside a church so fine! Everyone there was your buddy' For that sorry sorry time! They carried Lyle's casket out While his cycle sat there runnig Then as they slid it into the hearse, the bike just quit it" humming!! The piper played "Amazing Grace," As Lyle rode away. No, I"d never knew who Lyle was, But I met the guy today! In Memory Of Lyle Donkersloot. Ride On!! M. Robert (Bob) Schroder Okoboji |

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 8:00 PM there is a flip side to that statement..........When the tanks are full of that very spendy fuel & prices take a sharp drop who do you think takes the gouging??????????? In the big picture you hope it equals out! |

Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 9:28 PM So I've just been reading over this month's posts, and I have many things to say: 1) I'm going to be with a great band called Towncrier at Whiskey Dick's Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You should come out and hear some music. Preview at http://www.towncriermusic.com 2) Someone quoted a boatsafe website as giving a minimum distance in front of the boat for "going faster than 10 mph"... I think it was 200 feet. Everyone who will operate a boat should be aware that it's not that simple, it's a dynamic thing. How much faster than 10 mph? At 65 mph (which is really too fast for this lake, I'm just making an example), I'd hope you have much, much more than 200 feet clear in front of the boat, because that distance goes by very quickly. 3) As far as new laws go, what we really need are laws against stupidity, but that's too general; unfortunately, by attempting to legislate all of the aspects of stupidity individually, we would eventually wind up with very little freedom. All of us who don't listen to hardcore punk rock are intelligent enough to realize that we can not function in pure anarchy, however, none of us wants to live in a police state either. We have to draw the line somewhere in between, but where? Just something to think about... 4) With the holiday weekend looming, we need to think about keeping ourselves, and everone else, safe. With all due respect to the deceased, my father was a driver's ed teacher, and when I started driving, he told me he did not want me out late at night... Why? Not for reasons of a curfew, but because after midnight, most people on the road are drunk. It's even worse on the water, and even worse on a holiday weekend. I'm not saying it would be my fault if I got hit by a drunk, just that I (and everyone) should think and drive defensively. Remember learning that in driver's ed? I'm going to be boating this weekend, but I will not be hammered, and won't be driving too fast for the conditions or too close to anyone else, and if I'm out at night, I'll be keeping it at no-wake speed. Hopefully I'm not the only one thinking this way. Thanks for reading. |
