Hi all, I know we're all longing for summer, BUT don't forget the winter games, it may not be warm, but it is amazing to be STANDING on the lake - it is just the weirdest feeling. And all the people that attend - it is just awesome!

I was reading something today about Vilsack and the proposal of funding for a "Values Fund" with gambling proceeds or some such thing. What is this? I also miss the lakes. I have been in Florida three years in February, and still miss the lakes so much I am checking the websites up there with cams everyday still and wondering about the weather and reading the news. (Smile) I miss it immensely!

Just the mention of Walleye Weekend makes me smile! Although I don't fish, that is one of my favorite weekends, to see people starting to come up to the lake, and know that we have a few months of sun, sand, and suds to enjoy! The breakfast at the Koffee Kup Kafe sounds great too! I love that place!

How much snow did the Lakes area get?

SNOWnot enough
Thursday, January 6, 2005 at 11:13 PM
I haven't heard what the lakes area got, but Spencer received 10 inches of snow with this 2 day deal...I'd say here at the lakes we got around maybe 6 inches..not sure on that though..we had a lot of ice before the snow though, so easy goes it on those back roads if you're out driving around..Has any one heard any thing about the MarQuee in Spirit Lake ? Heard it was closed and for sale for like $ 30,000...any truth to this ?

Hi, My family & I will be vacationing at Okoboji for the first time this summer(July 2005). Hope to stay at Fillenwarths. Since we are new to the area I have a few questions - What is the booze cruise? I know I can rent boats - but what about water skis? Can water skis also be rented? We want more than F's 1/2 hour of free water skis. What is the age limit for admission into the bars? One member of the family is only 18. What kind of night life is there for someone 18 years old? Thank you VERY much for any info!

TO answer Nancy's question there are ski rentals at funtime rentals I think they are $35 dollars an hour ( skis, wakeboards, kneeboards, and tubes) and $10 more for every hour after that.

In answer to your question concerning the "booze cruise" that Fillenwarth Resort offers. They offer family cruises in the afternoon, open to families and offer free cocktails, beer, soft drinks and munchies. Late afternoon they offer a two similar cruises open to adults only. These cruises go out for approx. 1 hour and cruise the lake shore. They are very entertaining and you get to know many of the guest staying at the resort. Everything is kept under control for an enjoyable time. The phrase "booze cruise" probably originated years ago when the adult cruise tended to be pretty wild and "mooning the Queen" was not unheard of. Things have changed. Anybody out there with memories of the old "booze cruises"?

We stayed at Fillenwarth's for 13 years before we finally bought a place on East("The Original Okoboji"!) We loved it and still miss it, in fact when we boat on to West, we always cruise by the Fillenwarth main dock to check it out and sometimes see people we know from years past. The Booze Cruise was the highlight of each day. The drinks, the nuts, the cheese and crackers, the music, Captain Jon or Julie, ...all fun, and a great way to end each glorious at Boji! We still try to find some one we know who can get us on. We'd gladly pay. One of Boji's best traditions.

We stayed at a small resort on the south side of West Lake called Terrace View. I think it recently sold and is now named Harbor View. It was a nice quiet place with excellent suite like rooms. The KIds could walk across the street to Terrace Beach, and Boji Bay was right down the road. It was well worth the money and I would stay there again.

I had a friend Anchorage, AK and London, UK in '03 & '04 respectively. And yes, they came specifically for Winter Games. I'll be in contention again this year as my mate from London is returning. As far as games we participate in?? We'll have a mean game of ring toss goin' by the keg. I’m sure we’ll make up others along the way. Stop in if you want to play. If you know where I live, consider yourself invited!

yes, there is a service called RIDES. They will be available during the games. It is basically a minivan service that is free, but takes donations..and please donate... these people put up with a lot of %@$#.         "Has any one heard any thing about the MarQuee in Spirit Lake ? Heard it was closed and for sale for like $ 30,000...any truth to this ?" As a former employee, I can tell you that this is the truth. The current owner has been losing money, and the business was definately dropping off. I'll go into more details later, if you want... The place was ultimately forced to close, after a sting operation which had an underage person get served. The city then told the owner to close, or they would close the place down. The timing was needless to say, bad for the employees, as there isn't much business in the lakes this time of year.

The Marquee was 18+ for quite a while. In fact, College night was the big night there. Most likely Kalsow's will be doing the college night, the management wanted details on running it. I've not heard anything about anyone else wanting to buy the place, as the local law is really against the place, and the costs are outrageous there. Like I said, hopefully Rob from Regal Begal will get it. He knows what needs to be done, and has a group that will definately help him on the details... Hey, hopefully someone buys the place, it really has some potential to be THE spot to go to again(and some of us could use the work)...

It is a very sad day here at our house in Lincoln NE, I just got a letter from Dad @ Beaches stating that it has been sold and will no longer be a resort, my family (whole) has been staying there every summer for one week for 5 years, it was a very nice little family resort, I hope against hope that I don't learn it was sold to some doctor or lawyer who is going to build a multi million dollar house on the property to stay there on the weekends once in awhile, I don't condem them for being able to do that but it is always sad when resorts on the lake close. :-(

Condos galore!TheCondoJungle@okoboji.com
Thursday, January 27, 2005 at 5:33 PM
Ahhh, another quaint piece of Okoboji folklore gone for good. Yes, Beaches/Lees Resort has been sold, subject to a rezoning, (for condos) no doubt. If my sources are correct, Gable development, the same company developing the condos across from Tweeters has purchased Beaches. There was a zoning meeting Monday night, but I havent heard what they were asking for in regards to the zoning change, nor what was decided. Okoboji is changing so fast...........

Thanks for the info CondoJungle, I have heard for many years that the powers that be would like to privitize the lake, if thats true...and it seems to be, what a shame! If the lake is to be reserved for millionaires and billionaires who visit it on a very irregular basis how many kids are going to be deprived of the chances we had as children, the buildup to Okoboji vaction, the fun the fishing...all of it, I don't condem the well to do for their acomplishments and ability's, but this is just a sad state of affairs, in my life I have seen big money close down enough resorts to cry at, and Beaches wasn't that much cheaper than going to Hawaii ( except for the airfare ) I am truly sad that I will have to break the news to my 12 year old daughter who truly LOVED Beaches resort, that is something I dread more than anything else, how do I do it? what do I say?

Stay at Harbor ViewWendal
Thursday, January 27, 2005 at 7:39 PM
It is very sad that Beaches is closing. We stayed there numerous times. However, there are other small resorts that are worth the stay. One is Harbor View resort. Its on the south side of West Lake. It is not on the lake but the public beach is right across the street and the Taco House is down the road. Its a small resort like Beaches with a good family atmosphere. We have stayed there twice and love it. Call early to reserve though because it does fill up fast. WINTER GAMES HERE WE COME!!!

BeachesFYI
Friday, January 28, 2005 at 9:33 AM
The zoning did pass for Beaches to become a condo development. There is a new resort coming to the area, across from Trigg's. The "car" was put on the ice yesterday at 5:00.

curious?
Friday, January 28, 2005 at 10:04 AM
Does anyone else know anything about the resort going up near Triggs? I've heard rumors, but I won't post them as I can't substantiate them. Does anyone know any facts?

Condos galoreCondoJungle@0koboji.com
Friday, January 28, 2005 at 10:33 AM
As far as the Nielson property across the bridge from Triggs, it has been sold also. Not factual, but what I have heard, is that Equity Homes from the Sioux Falls area has purchased it, and is planning a large condo project, along with an indoor water park. These are the same folks that developed the luxury condos near Village West and are building all of the homes south of the cable TV tower.         What time are the fireworks and burning of the greens, so that those of us who can't be there can "tune in" and watch them online?

There is a Winter Games ceremony at 6:30 PM Sat, so the Burning of the Greens and Fireworks should come after that. No set time. Try KUOO at 103.9 for audio.

The bar at Okoboji Boats, is HUGE!!! Butch did a nice job with everything, it looks great!! Parking sucks, but that is something that we can deal with!!!! I think it is going to be the new hot spot!!! I suggest everybody go there, and see if for themselves!!

Hey all you WGR's The Water Saftey Council's camera looks good. It gives you a little better view of the lake. I couldn't see much today though because of the haze. It looked like you were looking through some dense fog. I like the fact that it rotates. Have fun at the Winter Games and stay cool.

I know it's early in the year but how is the motorcycle riding around there? I'm planning a trip for our group and wondering if it's a good area. Thanks

What an experience these Winter Games are! It truly is one of those "ya gotta see it with your own eyes" sort of things. Like the 100 mph snowmobiles, 4-wheelers spinning around on the ice, people being pulled on a sofa on runners, kids flying kites, people jumping from the hot tub to the Polar Plunge and back again, and more beer than Budweiser has breweries! And this is all at one time!! Okoboji Winter Games aka "10,000 Drunks On Ice" Wow!

ice outcareful!!

Heard of some open water on West Lake on the news,,and with warm temps this week, it should open up more! With winter games behind us and Feb. 1st tomorrow, makes me giddy thinking of spring around the corner. Anyone out there know of the earlierst recorded ice out? Praying for an early one this year!!

I attended Winter Games weekend. Maybe it is my age, but there is little for teenage kids to do. It needs to be more family than focus on drinking. I want my kids to experience the lakes like I did. Family fun all year round.

I took my teenagers over on Saturday and they got bored. They watched the Polar Bear plunge and were worried about the ankle deep water all around the site. The Winter Games committee needs to come up with activities for people who want to be out on the ice and enjoy it with their families. Either we missed it, or there wasn't a stand selling Hot Cocoa.

I too was very disappointed to see that the winter games are centered around another apportunity to drink alcohol and the opening of another bar. That is just what Okoboji needs. It is too bad there is not more for kids to participate in at the games. I also noticed the warnings today about the open water on both lakes. Funny that wasn't posted prior to the winter games. There was an earlier post about the complete safety of the ice since "it was measured to be about 2 feet thick." It is a wonder someone wasn't seriously injured.
