Sunday, August 1, 2004 at 9:31 AM Weather at the lakes can be rough at times, and obviously last weeks storm was such, however, a glass front marina is no place to be in a heavy wind, or tornado. No one should want to get inside there during a storm...??? The best place would have been the ditches in the back if it was that bad. I wasn't there, so don't have all the details. There's business reasons for not opening it up either. Think about it realistically, OK. After effects...did everyone make it through OK? That's the most important factor. rsvp from someone else who was there please. Thanks |

Sunday, August 1, 2004 at 10:37 PM Thanks to the Upson Downs for giving me and so many others a wonderful visit down memory lane this past week. I attended both shows at the Art Center, and loved every minute of them. Terry and Rusty were in top form and it seemed impossible that it had been almost 20 years since we had seen them together. Please don't stay away so long this time, We Love You!!!! Come Back to Boji again next summer. |

Monday, August 2, 2004 at 8:31 AM We were at The Barefoot on Saturday night and got to watch not a full moon, but the best lightning show across the water we've ever seen! Absolutely amazing! The bar was still open, and people were having a great time. The lakes area was not in any danger Sat. night. We live so close that we had Steve Schwaller from KUOO and the radar on the TV screen on until we were sure we would not get hit, then we went to Barefoot. People in watercraft and in bars drinking till they are sober need to take responsibility for THEMSELVES. Butch has no reason to open up his retail business outside it's normal hours to accommodate people who don't want to get wet. I'm sure his legal matters would be very complicated if he did. And try to tell those people on thier 6th pina colada that they can't bring it in the showroom with all the 90,000 boats! No, cut Butch some slack. He offers his business at the barefoot for all to enjoy, but don't ask for the shirt off his back! You can see those storms moving in...be responsible for yourselves! |

Monday, August 2, 2004 at 9:48 AM I know, I have nothing but time...here I am again. Thanks to foreveroustudentq for the update on storms, barefoot and Butch. You totally backed up my thoughts re his business. Too much to ask. Talked to Howard Titterington this morning. His son Tim and grandson, Dylan are the ones who found Jan Gardner's $$$s in Milford. Howard's dad and Jim (Bunch) Titterington were brothers, so we're what you'd call shirt-tail relation. His parents were Vern & Coila Titterington of "Vern & Coila's fame in Terrace Park. Small world!! It's so much fun connecting with the past. Guess that's part of why so many of us LOVE BOJI WITH A PASSION. It's in our blood. Be back soon. SL |

Monday, August 2, 2004 at 10:47 AM A huge thank you to all the wonderful people that went Back to 'Boji with the Upson Downs this weekend. Terry, Rusty, Chuck , Kevin and Dave send out their warmest wishes to all who traveled so far. Thanks also to Bryon and Kathy Christoffer who won the Silent Auction for the Back to Boji Tribute with their bid. That check will be donated by the Upson Downs to the Iowa Rock and Roll Musuem. Have a great rest of the summer. |

Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at 8:38 AM Well said, I too get tired of the "Butch Bashing". And no I am not one of his pawns, I have never met him. But think he is a brilliant businessman, just from my observations. We too enjoy the barefoot. We just live up the road from the barefoot and had intended to come enjoy the festivities, but decided to stay back with the weather in the area. I think poor Butch is darned if he does and darned if he doesn't. He just can't seem to make some people happy. But at least it appears to not let it get to him, and i think thats what ticks some people off. |
| L. Marie | @mchsi.com |
Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at 10:55 AM I'm w/ you smiling...I think these people that like to "Butch Bash" are nothing but JEALOUS! They should take the energy they use towards criticizing Butch, and put it towards trying to make their own successes in life. They will probably find that they don't have as much "time" on their hands to pick apart Butch's every move. |
| Lisa Stahl | stahl@charter.net |
Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at 12:54 PM Ditto with the comments on Butch bashing. Yes, he is a personal friend, but I have formed my own opinions. I have said it here before...people are jealous of those who have made it and Butch deserves everything he has. I am impressed, however, that most of the people who are writing negative things seem to be at least using their real name and e-mail instead of hiding behind the anonymity of this fine guestbook. |

Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at 11:07 PM My thoughts and prayers go out the the families and to everyone who was in the accident and to those who helped out with the accident on Monday. The lakes is such a great place to go and have fun, I think we often forget the bad things that "can" and sometimes "do" take place. I have no idea what happened or how this accident happened... but I hope that this will open our eyes and watch out for "the other guy." Thoughts and Prayers to U! |

Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at 12:32 PM Thank you for all of the people that keep on supporting Butch Parks. If you know his family or background at all you will come to find out that he lives life to the fullest. No one loves Okoboji more than Butch and no one wants to see it grow and become more successful for everyone around him. The work ethic, morals and values he sets for himself should be followed by more people. If some of the people that keep bashing him took the time to talk to him about his ideas on life and in general you will see that he only looks out for the best of everyone around him. As a former employee I learned the true meaning of work. Most people these days think that showing up to work you deserve a paycheck. Not working for Butch. You put your whole self into your job if you are a dock girl or head sales person. No one is above anything including Butch. (anyone seeing him cleaning off table or cleanign bathrooms lately?)Thank you Dad for helping to make me a better person. Stephanie Parks |

Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 1:20 AM Yes, it is horrible about the boating accident. I don't know anything about it either, other than it was tragic. It just makes one sick to be at the lakes and hear the sirens go off, and wonder if it is because of a boating accident or drowning. PLEASE everyone, be careful and slow down out there on the lake. We all love our lakes and our boats - let's all do our part to make it safe for everyone. God bless the family of that little sweetheart who lost her life the other day, and pray for them to get through this. Let's all pray that the other people that were injured are doing well. |

Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 11:19 PM Congratulations to the Lady Indians from Spirit Lake that will be playing in the state championship sotfball game on Friday night at Ft Dodge. They have worked long and hard to achieve this accomplishment, and I wish them the best of luck on Friday! Bring home the championship, and do the lakes area proud! |
| Lynn | a few questions |
Friday, August 6, 2004 at 9:13 AM What can you tell us about traffic coming into West Okoboji from the South on a Saturday - any suggestions? Someone said it was a nightmare. We don't believe it. Where is the closest grocery stores? Do you have HyVee, Walmart, Aldi's, Cubs? Thanks for the help all you helpful people!!!! |
| to Lynn | lazysummerdays |
Friday, August 6, 2004 at 10:49 AM the traffic is traffic, its not that bad. grocery store in Milford.(as you're coming from the south into Okoboji) and a Walmart in Spirit Lake. (HyVee and Walmart also in Spencer) |
| Highway Instructions | and Grocery Stores |
Friday, August 6, 2004 at 10:54 AM Highway 71 isn't that bad unless it's a holiday weekend, and it's 4 lane from Spencer, but the county roads coming in to the area are great. Watch your speed though, as the HP patrol these roads on the summer weekends. For grocery stores I'd recommend Buy Rite in Milford or the Fareway in Spirit Lake. |
| Marlow Newland | mnewland@netzero.net |
Friday, August 6, 2004 at 12:36 PM How many of you have received emails from people offering to buy things that you have listed on the Okoboji want add site that want to over pay you for the item and then have you return the over payment to some address? I am sure that this is a scam. They offered to purchase my item for $800.00 and then sent me a cashiers check for $4500.00. They then wanted me to send the over payment amount to and address in Singapore. The initial transaction seemed legitmate and they are very persistent. They have emailed me at least 10 times with requests. When I told them that the item was sold they told me to keep $500.00 for my trouble and mail the rest to the Singapore address. They have a convincing answer for every question that you ask them. I have the email names if you are interested. BEWARE |
| Husker Mike | mike@huskers.com |
Friday, August 6, 2004 at 12:43 PM The traffic in Arnolds Park itself can get a little slow as you approach the bridge on a Saturday, but it's not bad. The only speed zone to worry about are between Milford and the Park on 71. (People coming up through Denison should watch their speed there, though!) As for grocery stores, the best meat by far is at Fareway in Spirit Lake. They're closed on Sundays, though. |

Friday, August 6, 2004 at 12:47 PM I, too, wish the Lady Indians from Spirit Lake the best of luck in seeking a state championship. Our local team, the Woodbury Central Wildcats, are in the 1A championship game tonight against Cardinal. GOOD LUCK LADY 'CATS!! We're behind you all the way!!! |
| BEEN THERE | @OKOBOJI |
Friday, August 6, 2004 at 1:35 PM The Scam is true!!! They will send you a check, tell you to cash it then send the shipping money on to another company. The cashiers check take ten days to clear so by the time you figure out you have been scamed you are out of the money you sent on to the shipper !!!! SORRY you are now out the money you sent on to the shipping company because you have to give the money back to the place where you cashed the check !!! Been there done that only we played their game we took the check to the bank let them know what was going on so the cashed the check and we held the money for ten days, sure enough it was a counterfiet check. They even called us to see if we were going to send the money on, we told them when the check cleared we would do so......Well they called back after the bank told us the check was no good and hung up pretty fast after we said they were trying to trace the check................So we had a little fun on them !!! SO BE CAREFUL !!!!! |

Monday, August 9, 2004 at 5:46 PM Hi all !!! Well, it's been 3 years since I've been to Okoboji. The last time I was there my Sprint cell did not work on the lake. Have yal'l gotten any more towers there? How does AT & T work there? Also, to Husker Mike...glad you are still around. Football this year should be great...Horns on top of course???? I have one name for yal'l to watch...Cedric Benson!!! Look out. |

Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 12:31 AM We went with some friends to Whiskey Dicks for Dinner on Sunday night. There was no one in the bar and about 8 tables outside were occupied, including us. The service was terrible!!! It took forever to get our drinks, and then when I asked the waitress on two different occasions of chasing her down for a beer chaser, I never did receive one. We decided to go eat dinner elsewhere, so when we asked for our tab, she got this confused look on her face, and said she'd be right back... She came back and said our bill came to an even $20, with no receipt. She was clueless of what we had ordeed, or where our ticket was. I hope that anyone else that has been there had better luck than we did. It is such a great deck for being on the lake, but not if you are thirsty! She never did come back and ask any of us if we needed anything else. So we walked up to Yesterdays and had a great meal. I will go back to WD's when I start to see positive comments about it on this website...I hope the guy gets the kinks worked out! |
| WISKEY DICKS | sad |
Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 6:29 AM I know when we ate at WD's the one time we where dissappointed as well, but i do know that when you open up a new place it does take some time to get the kinks out, so down the road, we do intend to give them another chance once we start hearing more positive remarks. We ate out on the deck as well and the menu was very limited, anyone know if they have a larger menu for you if you sit inside? It is a great atmosphere and a beautiful bar, so i sure hope they can get it straightened out, all the places we like to go to are usually so busy, so it would be nice to have another place to stop. |

Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 9:06 AM Great time last weekend. So much to do...entertainment:Friday night, FREE live music on the Queen. Saturday, the wooden boat show. Sunday, the Vet Cars. Saturday, Barefoot Bar had live music. The customers seem to get into performing also with their singing and dancing. Think Butch has the right idea...he is seen going around making sure customers are taken care of, as well as, cleaning tables and carrying food items from the garage to re-stock the bars. There is never a cover-charge; the entertainment is FREE. Dock boys are always running to help dock your boats. I think they would appreciate a tip though as a nice jesture. |
| Just a | Suggestion! |
Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 12:21 PM We love the Barefoot Bar too. One thing that would be nice though is a big OPEN (green)/CLOSED (red) lit up sign on top of the Tiki Hut facing the lake, so that you can see from a distance on the lake if they are open before boating way over there just to find out they are closed. It has happened to us several times that when we get to the bar, they say they are just closing up, or not even open, and that is quite frustrating. |

Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 12:32 PM I've usually had good coverage on my AT&T Wireless phone -- knock on wood. As for football, well, I think our teams have gone in opposite directions. Tejas looks to have a fairly good team this year, but still will have to chase the Sooners. NU's athletic director decided to blow up 42 years of tradition and start over with new coaches, so nobody knows what to expect from the Big Red on the field. |

Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 11:53 AM I've enjoyed reading everyone's messages. I will be coming to Okoboji for the first time next week. Does anyone have a "must see" to recommend? |
| MUST SEE'S | FOR KERIN |
Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 2:29 PM Mmmmm, let's see. First I'd pick up all the free Okoboji magazines, brochures, etc. you can find, when you get here, and read up on everything the lakes have to offer. No. 1 are the lakes themselves, so if you have a boat, cruise West and East for sure. If you don't have a boat, rent one, or take a ride on the Queen II, to check out West Lake, at least. Beyond that, there's Arnold's Park Amusement Park, Abby Gardner's cabin, the Lakes Art Center, etc. If you like fun bars, try a different one each night. I'd recommend the ones on the water : Whiskey Dick's, The Ritz, and The Barefoot Bar. There are lots of great restaurants too. Make sure you talk to all the locals and other vacationers - the people up here are great! As far as a #1 "must see" - probably an Okoboji sunset !!! |

Friday, August 13, 2004 at 7:35 AM Well I see there are a few Football fans out there! Have any of you ever been to Lambeau Field? Now that's a place to watch Football! I do agree the Vikings will have a good "D" this year, but the rivalry is always good between us and makes the Winter go by a little quicker. Have fun everyone this weekend and enjoy the few short weekends left of Summer. Blues Fest in Duluth will rule! |

Saturday, August 14, 2004 at 12:02 PM This is a message to the Upson Downs who were one of my sisters favorite groups when we were "younger" and spent our early 20's at places like the Regal Beagle, Mother Natures and the Macombo Club. I attended their reunion concert 3 weeks ago and it brought back some great memories of being in Okoboji, checking out the fun guys, cruising on Saturday night around the "Strip" and so much more. I went to the concert for both of us. My sister passed away last summer, but I'm sure she was smiling at the return to our youth during those summers long ago. Thanks Rusty and Terry for the memories. |

Sunday, August 15, 2004 at 1:48 PM I've been reading the postings here for awhile this summer and it seems to me this forum is used more to complain than it is to promote this wonderful area that we all should be proud of. We go from a small town to a large city over night and are expected to hire, train and support a job force that disappears weeks before many of the tourists do. I really don't think many employees (especially ones that work for tips)really wake up and say to themselves "I'm going to see if I can do a really poor job today." So remember, what may be a poor experience to you may not be for someone else and it not fair to judge a whole business on the basis of one employee or one experience. Every business is unique and vital to the success of the whole area. I think we forget sometimes to just relax and enjoy this beautiful area and interesting company we are with, isn't that really why we live and play here? Now, I feel better! |

Thursday, August 19, 2004 at 1:50 PM I'm glad to hear that someone had good food and service at WD's! I will try the place again. It is a really fun night spot. One suggestion, if the owner ever reads this site...Please move the dance floor to the front and center, and move the tables there, to the dance floor. Everyone dances in front anyway! And everyone wants to watch people dance! Had a great dinner and a fishbowl margarita(ok I split one) at the Ritz this past weekend. Yum Yum! Is there any truth that next summer will be the last for that place, and then it will be turned into more dreaded condos? I'm starting to think this place should be called Condoboji! |

Friday, August 20, 2004 at 3:19 PM Yes, I have been swimming some this year, when the temp. is about 75 degrees, which hasn't happened very often.....cheers to Gibs, never been there myself, Milford too far a drive for me to drink beer.....but I'm sure it's like the bars in my hometown...everybody knows your name.... Rumors in a small town like this swarm like there's no tomorrow, no one will probably know about the Ritz till we see a farewell ad in the paper like Gary put in for Fiasco's in Spirit Lake..... |

Friday, August 20, 2004 at 3:53 PM Does anyone know the Eihausen's from Milford? Us girls knew them in the 70's and wonder if any of the boys are still around. |

Saturday, August 21, 2004 at 9:15 PM I care who is at Dick's for Labor Day weekend! So many of boji long timer's won't know what to think not spending the last night of summer with the boys at the traditional spot (The Garden)! Change is inevitable and not always a bad thing - still - bittersweet. |

Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 1:46 PM I am looking to take my wife to Okoboji for our 5th anniversary this coming October 23rd. We live in Lincoln, NE and my wife is a lake NUT! and would like to check it our for future family vacations with our two young sons. Since this is our anniversary, the boys are staying with Grandma and Grandpa and we are looking for a NICE place to stay with comfortable accomodations - preferrably with an indoor pool and Jaccuzzi (in room would be nice). Can anyone help?? Thanks, Roger from Nebraska |

Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 2:47 PM I would try The Inn, they have some new rooms with Hot Tubs - I think. The Inn is on the lake, but closes in the fall, so you will have to check to see if they are still open. AmericInn and Arrowood are both open year around and have indoor pools, but neither is on the lake. They are on a golf course. |

Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 4:33 PM Roger: I'm from Lincoln, NE and have had a place up at Okoboji for seven years. You couldn't pick a better spot to celebrate five years. October 23rd is my wedding anniversary as well. When my brother comes up for Kansas City he always stays at the Inn. That's the perfect spot. However, there is a Bed and Breakfast off HY 71 by the Lakes Art Center that is super nice. Does anyone know the name of this Bed and Breakfast? |

Sunday, August 29, 2004 at 11:09 AM Alright, time to get some live web cams at the park, the Steve Kennedy Statue was vandalized recently. Anybody have details on the reward money yet? Scuba divers are checking off the state peer to see if the statue went in the lake. |
| So Sad | :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( |
Sunday, August 29, 2004 at 2:08 PM My children and I visited the Steve Kennedy sculpture on Saturday afternoon, and hoped that perhaps the little boy sculpture was taken down for repairs. Saddly, it sounds like it's the work of vandals. Let's hope that those responsible will be found and held accountable and the sculpture can be restored. It is such a touching and beautiful tribute to Mr. Kennedy and a wonderful addition to the State Pier. Maybe it's time to cut all vehicle traffic in that area? |

Monday, August 30, 2004 at 8:32 AM Attention all bands if you go to WD to play BRING YOUR OWN SYSTEM !!! DO NOT use the house system !! They had an awesome young band there Friday night (lots of instramentals 3 saxs 2 trumpets 1 trombone) but you could not hear the young lady singing felt real sorry for her as she was getting very upset !! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO we went to see our friends and great band at the Beagle !!! MONKEYS UNCLE !!!! THEY WERE GREAT !!!! We were going to see them anyway but wanted to check WD out first. GOOD JOB BUCK AND JEN........................... |
| What's going on | this weekend? |
Monday, August 30, 2004 at 6:03 PM Just wondered what was going on this weekend for music entertainment? I caught the tail end of a radio ad saying something about Damon Dotson performing somewhere Labor Day weekend. Does anyone know the details? Also, are the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions at the Roofgarden Sunday night? The Blues Traveler Concert last Saturday night was awesome! Hope they can get some good ones booked for next summer too! Let's hope for nice hot weather for the weekend - going to the beach a couple more times would be good! |

Monday, August 30, 2004 at 7:34 PM Re; The "Gidde Up" post below............ The house system at Whiskey Dicks has well over 3,000 watts of power on mains, 6) 12" EV mids, 6) EV horns, and 4) 18" EV subs. I suggest to you that if a person can't get vocals loud enough in a room that size out of a system like that, he obviously doesn't know how to run it. |

Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 3:28 AM Okay, first of all, I get sick and tired of hearing all of the negativity toward Whiskey Dicks...they are in their first year of business and are trying to accomodate a much larger building than that of the Gardens...so bear with them...I know alot of locals and tourists alike are "upset" because it's a whole new atmosphere versus that of the Gardens, but it's about time we have a nice upscale place to go...nobody ever complains about Captains..why is that, because it's Grandfathered in ? No body around here likes change, yet we want to bring in more tourists and more money to the area...come on, give em' a break...they're learning and I'm sure Dick and the gang will be rockin' like crazy by next summer.... |

Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 12:50 PM Believe me they were working as hard as they could to get it right, it was not working. Talked to Buck from Monkeys Uncle they were in there the week before and brought in their own system. WD has a DJ system not a band set up. And I in no way was cutting down WD, First time I was in there damn nice place just felt sorry for the band. |

Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 2:45 PM Just a note, so it can be later referenced, in the state of Iowa, to serve alcohol out doors you need an "out door service permit." Even if the alcohol is sold in doors, and you take your beer out side to drink it, you need an "out door service permit." To get an out door service permit you must apply to the city council, if turned down THERE IS NO APPEAL PROCESS. Just want this here so it can be referenced later. Thank you. |

Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 5:01 PM For the record....WDs has a more than adequate set up for bands from a PA standpoint. However, MU (and it's own sound engineer)feel very comfortable with its PA system and chooses to bring it up and down the ramp into Whiskey Dick's because we like a little more power with a crowded room. When more people are in the place it's harder to push volume..... I will say, Whiskey Dick's is bar none the best bar/club venue for live music in the lakes area. They treat their bands great and offer a house PA for their convenience. We choose to use our own gear to put on the best show possible for us! We can't wait to be back!!!!! Keep up the good work WD. Sorry, had to clear the air. Buck, MU. |
