Hardcore bikers from Okobojishafferm@primenet.com
Wednesday, March 1, 2000 at 12:25 AM
Two Okoboji Harley bikers are featured on the "www.cyclerides.com" Internet site. These two bikers also rode with the Arizona Hell's Angels on the "red & white poker run" and the "Florence, Arizona prison run" (both biker rides were held last month). If you go to the "www.cyclerides.com" and click on the "Cancer Benefit Photos" (a benefit ride), you can scroll down to the middle photo (8 photos down or 3 photos from the bottom). Two couples are sitting at a table. Pick out the Okoboji, Harley Davidson biker couple. If you're younger than 40, you won't be able to identify them....ms

I was wondering what all goes on for the Okoboji homecoming on July 15 and 16. Haven't been up there for a few years, but I'll finally be 21 then. So, if it is a good time could you let me know. Thanks.

On the news this am, looks like Iowa will pass laws against drinking and boating, setting the blood-alcohol level at the same level used for automobiles. Bad news for those who like to boat and enjoy a few.

Fletch, when will you be blessing us with your high fla-lotin presence at the area soon to be know as "Every DNR will Breath Test" Iowa? The wife and I, who tells me "Damnmit we is getting a new boat this year" will be up there many times. Including July 8-15th, (Yes Julie, we love you very much and we owe you a beverage) Must have Info. Would make a special trip for you big daddy! Anytime I get to hang with a man of your stature, influiance and intoxication, I'M THERE! Of course as always, a Bober Soater! I don't mean to incourage consumption or over induldgence of any sort. I do incourage proper spelling, life jackets on the young, a tasty wake, seeing the sunrise, bloody Mary's at the Dry Dock for breakfast when proper, a Cartwright diddy, a Ritz Pizza, Gigi's smile and service served with a portabella at Maxwells, a slow ride on the water after closing time, a life time of new friends and memories all courtesy of "BOJI" and a pencil thin mustache....

It's about time Iowa passed some laws against potential drunken killers in boats. Drunk boaters have caused enough deaths, and ONE was too many. Bad News? Get a life. Now if they'd just work on the people who turn into idiots on jet skis . . . Don't even bother to argue with me . . . it hits close to home.

I live in San Diego but travel to Okoboji every summer. I love to check the live picture of the lake especially as the ice is melting and the season is changing. Thanks to those who maintain this webb site.

Ditto! I think the live camera is fantastic and am very thankful to get the chance to watch the ice go out. It should be any day now that we will be watching for the first boat and then the fun will be watching the dock go in! Thank you!

I'm as axnious as a "wino" with a $10 bill to see all of my old friends in Okoboji. I don't care much for the new Sober Boater law. How do they expect anyone to ski the bridge sober? See ya all in June, that is if I don't get pulled over on the way.

Tradition calls for he annual gathering on the 4th...Dr. Crazylegs says he's flying in before he starts his new job in Austin and the partier still known as Junk will be floating up from KC...I'll drop in from Dallas to lead up the charge on Long Island in an attempt to drink all of their tea. I imagine our maturity level will be at an all time low as will the alcohol level of any person behind the wheel of any transportation device. In other words, we'll be stupid, but safe. I will, however be sure to save a couple of drink dollars in the case I run into the mythic-Boji-god, otherwise known as Todd.

As a reply to your question, "What is going on with the park?" Well the park applied for an outdoor service permit that would allow them to have live music and dancing, you know like it used to be. People coming here for a good time for their vacation. People up here don't want that because they think that it will corrupt their kids to see people having a good time. I guess people forget why people come up here, for a good time. Captains Getaway will probably enclose the only removable roof in Iowa because of a few persons complaints. Thus making it similiar to about every other bar in Iowa and the midwest. Not making it unique like it used to be. Again somewhere a person can go on vacation to have a good time. I guess the some individuals do not see that here in the lakes region. And the other tourists beware the Arnolds Park and Okoboji police forces have joined. Making available seven cops to patrol this town of 2000 or so people. That is great I don't know of other towns that have that kind of police capabilities. We even on occasion get the county sherriffs and the Iowa State Patrolmen to drive the area. That is great. So I hope that answers your question and if anyone has any concerns over the latest developments here in the lakes region please write, after all it is the vacationers that keep this area running and going strong and make it the place it needs to be.. I think some people forget where they get their jobs or their income and don't realize that we depend on the vacationers. So lets bring back the good times, the live music past ten and the fun that we get to enjoy three months out of the year. Thank you for your time and I hope we get to see you all in the future!!!! sz

Okoboji is my favorite summer place. Have worked and played there the past two summers and this summer I'm chosing So Cal, to learn how to surf, other wise I would be back in a heartbeat. Lake Okoboji is where I learn how to wakeboard, drink like a fish, work my tail off, and met the best people ever!! Heck,I even got plates that say 'LK BOJI'. But will be back for the 4th of July and will be livin' it up @ my favorite bars like Murphy's and The Ritz, and probably most of the places I have worked in the past, too. Everyone that does what they do there keep up the great work!!!! Peace-n-Love Sarah

What a surprise to tune to the Home and Gardening Channel and find Okoboji as the lead story! Steve Kennedy gave a very good interview and the lake looked really nice while he was in the boat giving a tour. Too bad that they filmed it in the fall when all the leaves were off the trees. It is so beautiful when everything is green and the water is that lovely blue.

Julie - go to the Garden(Bavarian Garden)located at the bottom of the Central Emporium! Get a Long Island Ice Tea (they come in a fruit jar) Wonderful! But even water tastes good when the Cartwright Brothers are playing! There has been a recent release of the song if I had a million Dollars on the radio staions...well,I like their version best...JUST GO THERE - YOU'LL SEE! Probably won't have the pleasure to share that drink with ya though we won't be there until later in the week after the 4th of July - but make sure you give us an update on the web site! ENJOY!!!

I just read the internet article published by HGTV. (Thank you Jonathan Reed for the link). However, the article is...well...less than accurate on a lot of key points. For one, it states that The Legend roller coaster was buily after 1987...oops. Also a caption by one of the photos states that the park underwent a $7.6 million dollar renovation last year (also not true, 7.6 mil was raised, most of that went to just buy the property and now some improvements are beginning to be made). And lastly, throughout the entire article they refer to Arnolds Park as just "Arnold's". I've lived in the area almost my whole life and I've NEVER heard anyone (for sure not any locals) call it just "Arnold's". Wasn't Arnold's the drive-in on the TV show Happy Days? I am grateful HGTV chose to cover the area, but I'm dissappointed with the quality of the internet article. I didn't get a chance to see the TV version, how was the accuracy of that production?

While spending Friday with the Wearin O' The green, everytime I turned around at the pub in Omaha with noted Irish Heritage, I kept running in to people that I have met at the beloved 'Boji. Weird! More plans are set, more sunsets to witness and more friends to enjoy it with. Sounds like summer is soon upon us. Hey, Michell and Bryan, (pooder) drop me a line we need to catch up. The McCarthy Clan that we shared the Blarney with yesterday, you are still spelling your name wrong, need to drop the "H"! Your dock or ours? Hartley & Brenda, I am sorry we introduced you to the lakes and you've become addicted like the rest of us. We attemped our best Cartwright Bros. imitation yesterday, however the locals in Omaha were not impressed. That will not deter us from trying again.

Boji Babe, Who invited you to our lake? Okoboji is not about the things you appear to represent. Okoboji is about familiess and lake lovers tradition. Sure, we like to party, but not in the same manner that you are looking for. Nothing against Sturgis, but you are not comparing apples to apples. YOU ARE WAY OFF BASE. Better rethink your idea of Okoboji, it has never been a motorcycle mecca.

Settle down folks. Not all of us bikers are like the ones protrayed in the Cher movie 'Mask'. Most of us are not uneducated, beer guzzling, stinky scum bags like you say. True some of us do enjoy living off the land and making just enough coin to jump from party site to party site, but many of us do hold down real life jobs. Anyway, I thought Boji was a place where EVERYONE could go to have a good time, if that is not the case then I guess I am 'OFF BASE'. P.S. Hollywood Alley rules.

Lifer, it seems we have gotten off on the wrong foot. Let me issue you a formal apologize if I have offended you in some way. I'm simply looking for a nice place to lay my hog down, open up a six pack of Schlitz Lite and enjoy the world for what it is worth. I mean how can you label a person by something they enjoy to do in their off-time. Simply because I treasure those moments the cool lake air is flowing through my hair when I'm strapped upon the finest American machinery ever made, doesn't make me a bad person-- does it?

Hey Biker Babe, I could see a bike week in Okoboji, But I don't think the 4th of July has too many openings. I think your idea is a valid one, that needs a little thought. Maybe a week in late August or early September? I'm not saying it has to be sturgis, but maybe a swap meet, bike show, and possibly races if a track could be built. I know the interest is there, and a regional race track/stadium could be designed for multiple use. Sponsorship is usually easy to find in the racing industry. In the winter it could be used for snowmobilers. When its dry A multi-purpose design could allow all kinds of racing fun. There are already two airports in the county, why not one racing/mulit-purpose Stadium?

First of all, GO CLONES! MSU is going down tonight! Second of all, Lifer and Native what the ?#@! are you two talking about. Bikes are always a big part of an Okoboji Summer. If not, that new Indian bike shop wouldn't have opened. And what about when the Hell's Angels were here. Not too many problems that I recall. How can you say we don't want your kind here. Half the people that go to Sturgis or Bike Week in Daytona are Doctors and Lawyers. I'd say there are a few of those here. Get off the stereotype boys.

Wrong the Hells Angels did cause problems when they came through in the late 60's. Now I'm dating myself, but I remember damage in the park and lots of fights. You may be thinking of the Sons of Silence, they came through each summer and never caused problems. I am aware that Bikers can and for the most part are very well rounded and respected members of society. But Boji Babe is not presenting herself in that manner and she appears to be wanting us to think of her as the outlaw biker. She may very well be a wonderful person who just likes to blow smoke and get people going for fun. Bikers are welcome here, everyone is welcome. All we are asking is for all people vistors and locals to be thoughtful, and respectful.

Whenever I meet someone from out of town, the comments I hear most frequently are: 1. The lake is awesome. 2. This beer is cold. 3. Your radio stations suck. In elaborating on the third point, I would point out some of the music we get fed day in and day out. 1. KUOO - Great if you're tired. 2. KUQQ - Great if you're a burnt out hippie. 3. KICD - Good if you're a cowboy. There are others (KILR, KIGL, etc.), too numerous to mention. My point is, Okoboji needs a modern rock radio station! I believe there are many like myself, who like bands such as: Creed, Bush, Sevendust, Godsmack, Rage Against the Machine, etc. I am sure I could list at least a hundred bands here that will never get any airtime at any of the radio stations listed above. You know KUQQ had promise when it first started, but has slowly changed to primarily classic rock. KBVU 97.5 is OK, when it comes in. I don't want to put anybody down, but it's really only a college radio station, and it shows. My proposition is to form an area group of investors to build our own modern rock station. We want it, we need it, and we will get it! What do you think?

CAN'T WAIT FOR SUMMER....IT'S TIME TO GET THE BOATS AND WATER GEAR OUT. The best bar, well there are no bad bars in Okoboji. Bloody Mary's with a beer chaser at the Bavarian Gardens with deck overlooking the lake or the Dry Dock for lunch are the best picks for daytime. At night everything rocks.

Just like my old school chum Fletch to suck up to the pretty ladies, then claim, whhhooaa, she ain't my wife! Nice move old boy! I am just pulling your chain-driven-AMF-Oil-leaking-bike. Now, to comment on a previous post, best of luck with the modern rock radio station, an area that I may have a wee bit of knowledge. Nothing against Rage-against-the-smack-god-soybean, er corn bands, it's just that, well, as an advertising person once told me, people that listen to that aren't buying my product, their stealing it. Now, don't go all rightgeous on me about this and that, just passing along what was told to me. The Great Lakes area I am afraid is not populated by enough fans of the music to which your profuse your desire to support such a format economically. They are having trouble making it work in large cities. But, that is the best thing about the internet, Web casting. As for KUOO, two words "Cash Cow". Ain't nothing wrong with serving the Great Lakes and The Okoboji's with news, information, middle of the road music and great identification and attitude that is the Boji Expirence. Then again, what in the heck do I know, I think the Cartwright Bros are a hoot and a holler.

I'm not sure where you are all coming from welcoming Boji Babe and her alky friends to our nice community. Anybody who treasures their moments drinking and riding bikes can stay out. Plus I know that some of the bike gang members are indeed lawyers, doctors, etc., but when they are on their two-wheelers they are nothing more than a public nuisance. Keep your bikes and your booze buddies out of Okoboji and keep pedaling to Sturgis.

Ryan, I share your pain regarding the radio station issue. A station of the format you mentioned would be great. Things were really bad before KUQQ showed up. (Thank goodness for CD players). This whole idea that only punks with pierced tongues listen to modern rock is a misguided generalization at best. I'm a 35 year old businessman and I listen to modern rock. Yes, there are also a lot of punks with pierced tongues that are modern rock fans. However, what the advertising person Todd mentioned is failing to remember is that these people who are today's punks are TOMMOROW'S BIG CONSUMERS. In 12 years that annoying 18-year-old will be 30 and have some spending power. The time to build product awareness in these kids is now. I assume the advertiser mentioned plans on still being in business 12 years from now, right Todd? Successful companies are always building brand awareness in young people. Ya gotta have some foresight to be able to see past next year if you are going to be successful. Now, after saying all that, we just bought a lakeshore house so I won't be able to offer any investment help in a station at this time (sorry Ryan). And if I may chime in with an opinion on the Cartwright Bros.: I agree with Todd that they are a hoot to see once or twice, but I know people who try to go see them everytime they are at The Gardens (15 or 20 times a season); talk about tedious, nobody is THAT funny.

Rich, I cannot agree more. I am 25, have a college education, and a career. The stereotype cast over modern rock lovers like ourselves is greatly exaggerated, and is really only an uneducated opinion. KUOO, KUQQ, and KICD have a large audience base, largely because people have no other choice. Most would rather have bad radio than none at all. I am more inclined to believe that many people would change the station when given a choice. I am not a broadcaster, nor do I have any radio experience. I do know that starting a radio station is quite expensive. Instead, maybe KUQQ could give us a couple days per week of strictly modern rock on a trial basis to see how viewers react. The interest is all around us, we just need a voice, and someone to listen.

Ryan, I also know very little about the ins and outs of the radio broadcasting biz. Your idea about test runs on KUQQ is creative and that's the kind of thinking that makes stuff like this actually come to pass. KUQQ's programming is not local anyway. It's "piped in". The DJs you hear are sitting in a studio somewhere in another part of the country and the programming is sent to KUQQ in Dickinson county (by satellite presumably). So there is no hassles associated with hiring DJs and getting a library of recordings to play, etc. This begs the question, why not "pipe in" some modern rock programming....dare to dream....

I sold for KUOO for almost 13 years, so I was there when KUQQ was "born". People were thrilled! It's main audience was male, but females liked it also. Listener age ranged from 18 to 55 (aging baby boomers ~ the ones with disposable income).I traveled a wide area and always heard good things about the Q because there wasn't another format like it close enough to bring in without static. The satellite feed comes from Dallas with good, professional talent. Classic Rock has a definite niche and, sorry guys, but it's much farther up on the list than "modern rock". As for KUOO, the Adult Contemp format is in the top 5. But KUOO strives not just to be a music source, but also to be the quickest and most complete information source for the lakes area and surrounding counties. It's a thankless job, but they've got some top-notch talent, and an excellent news man. The biggest problem a radio station has is evidenced in your postings . . . you cannot please everyone. But God knows they try. I now live in AZ. and sell for two formats ~ oldies and country. There is a ton more competition, but I can outsell the "modern rock" formats any day of the week, and there are several in the neighborhood. You aren't going to like this, but their listeners are referred to as "scumbags". Now Im sure that description doesn't fit you two, but that's what I'd be up against if I tried to sell your format. You're better off just buying some CD's and tuning into KUOO for the latest news and weather. And, while you're at it, thank the sponsors . . . they're trying to please you. As for "building product awareness" . . . most folks who are "into" your format do NOT want to hear any commercials. Fact. Next, why don't you approach Waitt Broadcasting (owners of KUOO, KUQQ, and many other stations), and see if they would program for you at night. Who knows? On another subject, is there anyway the green and yellow colors on this page could be changed? It's sort of blah. Also, note the Indian Okoboji ad at the top of the page. Did Boji Babe start something? :-)

Sunlover, thanks for the insider information on the realities regarding the radio broadcasting business. I realize Okoboji is a small market for non-mainstream formats. I actually take some pride in the fact that I'm outside of the mainstream (at least in my taste in music) especially for my demographic group. Now, it sounds like we could have some interesting discussions regarding building product awareness in young people, (i.e. Is there ANYBODY who wants to hear commercials?) Believe me, I understand the realities of sitting across the desk from a client and needing to sell what they want to buy. So I certainly don't want to put down Waitt Broadcasting or anyone for the stations they currently operate in the area. I would actually like to thank them (especially for KUQQ). I also understand the perceptions about people who listen to the format in question. Whether true or imagined, that's the perception of the mainstream. Scumbag? Hey, I've been called worse!:)LOL In my opinion the "mainstream tends to follow some extremely stupid trends. Pro wrestling is popular, Bill Clinton got elected twice, The Spice Girls used to sell out stadium concerts. I rest my case.

Will we have to worry about the rocks in front of the lake patrol station like we did in the 70's.         But first, a note to "who cares" . . . get a life. Now Rich, where were we?! I don't know that there IS anyone who WANTS to hear commercials; I'm a surfer myself, but even before I was in radio, it was my main source for info. Don't pay attention to ads in print. Only watch TV ads if they're funny or unique. I think that's typical of most people. But what I'm saying is that most, maybe not all, people who listen to your favorite format do NOT pay as much attention to commercials. I've sold 5 different formats now, so "been there, know that"! Could go on but don't want to bore the likes of "who cares". Keep coloring outside the lines, Rich . . . it's healthy! (What DO you sell?)

Sunlover, I'm a partner in an insurance agency. (Now there's something exciting, eh?) What part of AZ are you in? I lived in Tempe for a while right after college. Listened to KUPD a lot down there. I know I've been extolling modern rock on this board but I'm certainly not opposed to some Skynard (ala Boji Babe) now and then. One of the best bands from that southern fried rock genre is Molly Hatchet, in my humble opinion. They have a unique sound all there own and never sold out just to sell records like some bands did/do. You like Hatchet, B.B.? Oh, and don't let the prudes on this board discourage you from coming to Okoboji. You see people from every walk of life out here, and that's part of what makes this area a cool place.
